K-5 reopens to traffic after being closed for flooding

K-5 in Leavenworth County over Seven Mile Creek is now open to all traffic as flood waters have receded from the roadway pavement. Crews are still cleaning mud off the roadway, but the roadway is open to traffic..

K-87 in Marshall County from the K-9 junction south to the Village of Vliets still closed to all traffic due to flood waters over the roadway.

Update: as of 10 a.m., U.S. 24 reopened in Jefferson County.

Flooding has been reported in Leavenworth County, according to the Kansas Department of Transportation.

As of 8:30 a.m. May 11, K-5 in Leavenworth County over Seven-Mile Creek was closed to all traffic because of flood waters over the roadway, KDOT said.

K-192 in Easton and Leavenworth County also was closed to all traffic because of flood waters over the roadway, KDOT said.

In Jefferson County, Kan., U.S. 24 from U.S. 59 to 5 miles east (mile marker 390) was closed to all traffic because of flood waters over the roadway, and was expected to reopen in 1.5 hours, KDOT stated.

Drivers must use alternate routes and there are no marked detours at this time, according to KDOT.

The National Weather Service said there is a flood warning for the Missouri River at Atchison, Kan., Napoleon, Mo., and Waverly, Mo., St. Joseph, Mo., and Miami.

Those encountering water on the roadway should not attempt to drive through it but should turn around and go back, the weather service said. As little as 6 inches of water may cause a vehicle to lose control.

Olathe man arrested at nudist park near Leavenworth faces child porn charges

An Olathe man arrested at a nudist park near Leavenworth appeared in U.S. District Court in Kansas City, Kan., Monday on child pornography charges.

Christopher Jon Saemisch, 58, Olathe, Kan., is charged in federal court in Boston with one count of distributing child pornography. He was arrested May 6 at the Gaea Retreat Center near Leavenworth, Kan.

A criminal complaint and affidavit filed in federal court in Boston alleges Saemisch, who is a registered sex offender, used the Internet to distribute child pornography to an inmate in the federal Bureau of Prisons custody at FMC-Devans in Ayer, Mass. The inmate has been incarcerated since 1977 following convictions for child exploitation offenses.

The affidavit alleges that in emails to the inmate Saemisch said he was collecting child pornography and wanted to travel to Europe to have sex with children. The affidavit alleges Saemisch used code words in his communication including “antiques” for child pornography and “puppies” for children.

If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of 10 year and a fine up to $250,000. The Department of Homeland Security investigated. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts is prosecuting.
