KCKCC Enactus team competes in Cincinnati

Six Enactus students from Kansas City Kansas Community College attended the Enactus United States National Exposition April 1 to 3 at the Duke Energy Convention Center in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Enactus is an international nonprofit organization that brings together student, academic and business leaders who are committed to using the power of entrepreneurial action to improve the quality of life and standard of living for people in need.

At the event, Estefania Torres, Eva Bett, Jose Romero, Gustavo Perez-Martinez and Joe McSorley showcased the effects of their educational and community outreach efforts.

These students were evaluated by business leaders, serving as judges, who rank them on how successfully they used business concepts to improve the quality of life and standard of living for those in need.

The judging panel gave them a standing ovation after the presentation.

The KCKCC team placed as a finalist in the opening round and received an opening round trophy.

Allen Lenoir, faculty member and Sam Walton Fellow, also received recognition.

The seven major projects, on which the KCKCC Enactus students presented, included:

•         My Shelf to Yours – Assisted international and non-international students who show financial need by establishing a lending library for students and providing more than $5,500 in tuition scholarships.

•         KCKCC MADE – Promoted individual innovation and entrepreneurship on campus.

•         Hillcrest Transitional Housing – Helps homeless individuals become self-reliant.

•         Junior Achievement – Taught fourth and fifth graders about business.

•         Reality U – Educated students on financial literacy.

•         Habitat for Humanity – Improved housing in the urban core in the Kansas City area.

•         V.I.T.A. – Assisted low-income people with income tax preparation.

Enactus is open to all KCKCC students. KCKCC names men’s assistant soccer coach

As the new assistant men’s coach, Burke Slusher brings more than 20 years of coaching and playing experience to the Kansas City Kansas Community College soccer program.

The assistant to head coach Ruben Rodriguez, Slusher comes to KCKCC after serving as the assistant coach for men and women at William Jewell College.

“I played with Tait Einerson (KCKCC women’s assistant coach) and was familiar with Coach Rodriguez reputation in coaching so it was an easy decision to come here,” Slusher said. “Also, everyone wants the program to go in the right direction.”

A native of the Kansas City area, Slusher grew up in the northland, attending and playing at North Kansas City High School.  He played collegiate soccer for Missouri State University (formerly Southwest Missouri State University).

Slusher coached youth with the KC Pace soccer club, winning Missouri state championships in 2005 and 2007, and served as an associate head coach and director of goalkeeping for the Kansas City Brass PDL from 2002-2013.

In addition, Slusher has been a coach for the Wizards youth training program, Missouri ODP identification camps, William Jewell goalkeeping camp director, and a talent evaluator for Sporting KC and FC Kansas City open tryouts.

KCKCC golfers just miss third in best Jayhawk outing

Kansas City Kansas Community College’s young golf team turned it its best Jayhawk Conference performance of the season in the fifth designated tournament of the year Sunday and Monday.

Putting together rounds of 296 and 310 for a 606 total, the Blue Devils finished fourth just a stroke back of third place Johnson County (305).

Dodge City continued its season-long dominance of the league with a 3-under par 573 with Hutchinson second (583) in the 36-hole tourney played at Rolling Meadows in Junction City.

Freshmen had the four low scores for KCKCC led by Seve Sites of Shawnee Mission West, who had a 74-75-149 to tie for ninth.

Montana Fasching of Piper was another stroke back at 75-75-150 to tie for 12th while Lane Pauls tied for 19th (73-79-152) and Dalton Ayres shared 24th (74-81-155). Both are from Newton.

Sophomore Collin Herron of Topeka Hayden finished in a tie for 31st at 76-81-157 and Alec Otting of Basehor was 51st with a 90-86-176.

A 10-team tournament, Garden City finished fifth (609) followed by Independence (616), Barton County (632), Coffeyville (635), Allen County (658) and Colby (672).

The Blue Devils will close out KJCCC play April 20-22 when the 54-hole Jayhawk championship tournament will be held at Sand Creek in Newton.
