Nominations being accepted for two KCKCC awards

by Kelly Rogge

As plans continue for the Kansas City Kansas Community College Endowment Association’s first gala event, nominations are now being accepted for two special awards.

The 4.0 Gala, presented by AT&T, is on Saturday, Oct. 25, at Lake Quivira. Funds raised through the event will go toward supporting the college as well as for student scholarships.

In addition to a dinner, there will be a live and silent auction and the presentation of two awards – the Wyandotte Countian of the Year and the Distinguished Alumni of the Year.

The purpose of the Wyandotte Countian of the Year Award is to recognize an individual who has made significant contributions to the Wyandotte community. To qualify for the Distinguished Alumni of the Year Award, nominees must have either attended or graduated from Kansas City Kansas Community College.

To nominate an individual for either award, a completed nomination form must be submitted along with one of two things – a statement of one page or less on the nominee’s contributions to Wyandotte County (Wyandotte Countian of the Year Award) or a statement on the nominee’s experience at KCKCC and how that changed their future (Distinguished Alumni award). Additional pages for either award can also include career-community information, personal and professional accomplishments, the nominee’s membership in organizations and other awards and honors.

Nomination forms must be received on or before July 15 in the KCKCC Endowment Office. Winners will be announced later this summer.

For more information, to obtain a nomination form or to submit a nomination packet, contact Dawanna Fangohr at the KCKCC Endowment Association, 913-288-7675 or by email at [email protected]. Nomination packets can be submitted via email or can be mailed to the KCKCC Endowment Association, Attn: Dawanna Fangohr, 7250 State Ave., Kansas City, KS. 66112. Nomination forms will also be posted on the KCKCC website, www.kckcc.edu.

KCKCC cagers Crawford, West both to Peru State

Jamisha Crawford

Bailey West

by Alan Hoskins

Two Kansas City Kansas Community College basketball teammates, Jamisha Crawford and Bailey West, will take their talents to Peru State in Peru, Neb., this fall.
Crawford, a 5-1 guard from Washington High School, played only the second half of her sophomore season after being injured in her second game as a freshman while West played in all 32 games in helping the Lady Blue Devils post a 24-8 record, KCKCC’s best mark since 1997.
A 5-11 forward from Burke High School in Omaha, West started 12 games this past season while averaging 6.2 points and 4.6 rebounds. A two-year performer, she averaged 6.3 points and 5.2 rebounds as a freshman. A defensive standout, Crawford averaged 2.0 points, 1.9 rebounds and one assist per game in 17 contests.
KCKCC coach Valerie Stambersky said Crawford and West chose Peru State because of the beauty of and atmosphere of the campus and that it offers majors in their chosen fields, Crawford in Athletic Training and West in Education.
“Both felt that it was a good fit, that the coach was nice but not too nice and that the team was looking to make changes that would make a difference,” Stambersky said. “Jamisha will really be able to hound and defend and create havoc in the backcourt while Bailey’s versatility inside and out will provide a lot of opportunities to be effective offensively. They’ll both do a good job.”

KCKCC softball camps to focus on offense, pitching, defense

by Alan Hoskins
Two summer softball camps – one focusing on offense and one on defense and pitching – will be held at Kansas City Kansas Community College starting Monday, June 23.
The Defensive Camp and Pitching Clinic will be held Monday through Wednesday, June 23-25, with the Offensive Drill camp the following Monday through Wednesday, June 30-July 2. Both camps will run from 9 to 11 a.m. on the KCKCC softball field at 7250 State Ave.
The camps will be run by KCKCC head coach Kacy Tillery and assistant Taci Beatty with assistance from KCKCC student athletes and former Blue Devil all-conference players. Both camps are open to young players of all ages with all skill levels, from beginners to advanced.
Pitchers will work on proper mechanics, movement of pitches, gaining power and developing location skills. Defensively, emphasis will be on throwing mechanics and the proper way to field ground balls and catch fly balls. In addition, individual attention will be given to the various positions both in the infield and outfield as well as behind the plate.
Hitting, bunting, slapping, base running and sliding will all be covered in the Offensive Drill camp. Participants will go through various drills to help improve swing mechanics, contact and power and strike zone and pitch recognition. Offensive strategies such as bunting and slapping, proper base running and sliding techniques, stealing bases and the mental approach to successful hitting will also be covered.
The cost of each camp is $50 although participants taking part in both camps will be eligible for a discount. Each player needs to bring a glove, cleats or athletic shoes and water bottle. In addition, participants in the Offensive Camp need to bring a bat and warm-up pants for sliding drills. Registration forms are available in the KCKCC Athletic Department in the Field House at the north end of the campus or may be requested by contacting Kacy Tillery at 913-288-7356 or [email protected].
