No. 15-ranked Cowley spoils KCKCC men’s soccer debut, 6-0

The Kansas City Kansas Community College men’s soccer team finally opened its postponed 2020 season on the road Friday at No. 15 ranked Cowley County in Arkansas City,

The two teams battled on even terms before the Tigers’ Antonio Peruchi Marra and Alexandre Picoto scored on unassisted goals midway through the half for a 2-0 halftime lead before the Tigers pulled away in the final minutes for a 6-0 win.

The Blues Devils are back in action Monday at Neosho County in Chanute in a women’s and men’s Jayhawk Conference doubleheader at 5 and 7 p.m. The home opener for the Blue Devil men comes Saturday, April 10, a twin bill against Dodge City at noon and 2:30 p.m.

A couple of defensive mistakes and a controversial penalty call doomed the Blue Devils in the first half. The mistakes were multiplied in the second half when Kervens Joseph drew a red card, forcing KCKCC to play most of the second half with 10 players. The Tigers jumped on the opportunity, scoring three of their six goals in the final six minutes of play.

KCKCC men lose to Fort Scott; in playoffs Monday

Two statistics tell the story of Kansas City Kansas Community College’s 110-90 loss at Fort Scott Wednesday night. The Blue Devils were guilty of 35 turnovers; the Greyhounds knocked down 17 three-point field goals.

The loss was pivotal for the Blue Devils. Not only did it knock them out of first place in the Jayhawk Conference, it dropped them to fourth place and a first-round home playoff game against Highland Monday night. A win would send KCKCC to Labette in semifinal play Wednesday.

Monday’s tipoff is set for 6 p.m. with the game to be streamed on the KCKCC Blue Devil Athletic website.

The win vaulted Fort Scott into a three-way tie for the Jayhawk championship with Johnson County and Labette, all at 5-3.

Highland and KCKCC tied for fourth at 3-2 with Hesston last at 0-8. Fort Scott will play host to Hesston in Monday’s other first-round game with the winner to play at JCCC Wednesday.

Fort Scott took advantage of the 35 Blue Devil turnovers to build a 55-45 halftime lead and stretched it to 80-59 with 12 minutes left.

KCKCC never got closer than eight points in the second half. The Greyhounds were 39-for-76 for 51.3 percent from the field including 17-of-37 treys (.459).

The Blue Devils actually shot slightly better, 37-of-71 for 52.1 percent but could not overcome being outscored 51-27 from three-point. KCKCC was 9-of-25 from three (.360).

Both teams had five players score in double figures. KCKCC’s Deron McDaniel led all scorers with 26 points including 7-of-14 three-pointers while Robert Rhodes led all rebounders with 14.

Caleb Jones had a near double-double with 19 points and nine rebounds; DeAngelo Bell scored 14 points, Bryce Johnson 13 and Rhodes 11.

Zach Nelson led in assists with six and steals with five. Kelyn Bolton had 22 points and Gavin Coone 20, both off the bench for Fort Scott.

In other final regular season games, Labette upset JCCC 72-66 and Highland routed Hesston 88-42.

KCKCC deals Cowley first Jayhawk baseball setback

Kansas City Kansas Community College dealt No. 7-ranked Cowley College its first Jayhawk Conference defeat in 10 games Tuesday.

Limiting the Tigers to four hits, the Blue Devils took a 5-2 opening game win before dropping a 14-1 5-inning nightcap.

The two teams will complete their four-game series at KCKCC Tuesday, April 5. At Johnson County Thursday, the Blue Devils (4-2) next play host to the Cavaliers Saturday.

Lefthander Tre Simmons allowed four hits in six innings to run his record to 2-0. A freshman from Olathe West, Simmons struck out three and walked three. Sophomore Parker Weddle finished up, striking out two three hitters he faced.

Raymond Paniagua delivered the game’s biggest blow. Paniagua followed a one-out walk with a run-scoring triple and then scored on Caleb Adams’ ground ball for a 2-1 lead in the third. KCKCC broke a 2-2 tie in the fifth, scoring the go-ahead run on a double play after loading the bases without a hit and then added two insurance runs in the seventh, scoring both on wild pitches after a lead off singled by Camden Karlen.

Cowley (19-3) broke open the 11-1 nightcap by scoring seven runs on the second off starter Alan Mercado (0-2) and reliever Joseph Reyes.

KCKCC was limited to singles by Cole Dawson, Darius Freeman, Beau Grable and Paniagua. Cowley’s Racer Felter and Jerome Tylicki combined to strike out nine and walk two.
