Pivotal Hutchison home run powers KCKCC sweep at Highland

Powered by two pivotal Palmer Hutchison home runs, Kansas City Kansas Community College swept a doubleheader at Highland Saturday although needing a late-inning rally in the second game.

A sophomore from Hays, Hutchison’s grand slam homer in the first inning ignited a 14-4 opening game win and his solo shot in the eighth inning pulled the Blue Devils into a 6-6 tie and laid the foundation for a 11-6 win in the nightcap.

The wins vaulted the Blue Devils (9-7) into third place in the Jayhawk East just ahead of Coffeyville (10-8), Allen County (7-7) and Fort Scott (10-10). Home against Labette in a doubleheader Monday, the Blue Devils play at Neosho County Thursday and at home Saturday. All have 1 p.m. starting times.

KCKCC trailed 6-5 in the second game at Highland before Hutchison’s game-tying blast to right-center in the eighth. Once even, the Blue Devils scored five times in the ninth on five straight one-out hits. After singles by Cole Silbowski. Cole Dawson and Caleb Adams loaded the bases, Raymond Paniagua singled in the go-ahead run and Brendyn Bard doubled in two more. Camden Karlin completed the inning with an RBI single.

Five Blue Devils had two hits in a 14-hit attack – Dawson, Adams, Paniagua, Bard and Hutchison. Trailing 3-2, Darius Freeman gave KCKCC the lead with a 2-run double in the third. Hunter Cashero (2-0) got the win, allowing two hits and one run in three innings in relief of starter Tyler Kapraun before Gabriel Ramos struck out the side for his first save,

Hutchison’s grand slam got KCKCC in front 4-0 with two out in the first inning of the opener; Paniagua capped the 14-4 win with a 3-run home run in the sixth and final inning. Silbowski had four singles and Beau Grable three to lead a 14-hit attack. Paniagua and Hutchinson added two hits each.

The Blue Devils went ahead 8-0 in the third on singles by Silbowski, Paniagua, Bard and Grable, all with two out. Chase Terrell (2-0) got the win with 2.2 innings of two-hit relief after starter Sebastian Velez was touched for four hits and three runs in 3.1 innings.

Blue Devil women get record sixth soccer win a row, 7-0

Kansas City Kansas Community College’s unbeaten women’s soccer team stretched its winning streak to six in a row Saturday, the longest winning streak in its history.

Unleashing their biggest scoring assault of the year, the Blue Devils cruised to a 7-0 victory over Garden City. The win kept KCKCC firmly atop the Jayhawk East standings ahead of Barton County (4-0-1) and Cowley (3-1-1). All other teams have at least two losses.

The win also sets up what could be the game of the year next Saturday.

After playing host to Coffeyville (3-2) Wednesday at 5 p.m., the Blue Devils play at Barton Saturday at 2 p.m. with first place on the line.

“Barton is the least of our worries right now; we have a big game Wednesday against a very dangerous Coffeyville team,” KCKCC coach Shawn Uhlenhake said.

The 7-0 blanking of Garden City was played almost entirely in the Broncbusters’ end of the field as the Blue Devils repeatedly attacked the goal and scored in bunches. Twice, back-to-back goals were scored in well under a minute.

Sophomores Madi Broeker and Corrine Hughes each scored two goals, three of which came on assists from Melissa Siegel while Susie Lopez and Mia Tomasic combined for the Blue Devils’ fourth shutout of the season. In six games, KCKCC has outscored its opponents 26-2.

Broeker put KCKCC ahead 1-0 early on an assist from Paige Liston and then made it 2-0 on an assist from Siegel at the 21:35 mark of the first half. A half minute later, Hughes scored on a pass from Siegel for a 3-0 halftime lead.

In the second half, Siegel scored on a pass from Katrina Sargent at the 36:13 mark and 21 seconds later, assisted on Hughes’ second goal at 35:52. The final goals were scored on assists from Kennia Acuna Soto, the first to Jaidyn Yingling; the second to Mackenzie Denham.

Blue Devils’ baseball win streak to four with sweep of Highland

Kansas City Kansas Community College’s baseball team got back above the .500 mark with a much-needed sweep of Highland Community College Thursday.

The Blue Devils needed just five innings for an opening 13-3 win, then had to go nine innings for a 6-3 victory in the nightcap. The wins stretched KCKCC’s winning streak to four following 14-7 and 18-0 wins over Rockhurst junior varsity Tuesday, a sweep that snapped a six-game losing skid.

KCKCC wraps up its four-game series Saturday at Highland after Thursday’s wins kept the Blue Devils in the thick of the fight for a first division finish in the Jayhawk East Conference race. At 7-7, the Blue Devils are locked into a battle with Allen County (7-5), Coffeyville (8-8) and Fort Scott (8-10) for third place. Johnson County (17-1) and Cowley College (15-3), teams the Blue Devils were 1-3 against, lead the conference.

Sophomore Palmer Hutchinson swung the big bat in the 13-3 win over Highland, driving in seven runs with a grand slam home run, a two-run home run and a sacrifice fly.

Hutchinson’s 4-run blast in the second gave KCKCC a 9-3 lead and his 2-run bomb to left-center came in a 4-run fourth that also included singles by Caleb Adams, Brendyn Bard, Jaylon Johnson and Camden Karlin.

Raymond Paniagua gave KCKCC a 3-2 lead in the first with a 2-run double. The Blue Devils scored five times in the inning that also included singles by Johnson and Beau Grable and Hutchinson’s sacrifice fly,

Sophomore Park Weddle (3-3) got the pitching win, giving up five hits, walking four and striking out two. After giving up two runs in the first, Weddle returned 12 of the next 13 Scottie hitters and struck out four in a row in one stretch.

The Blue Devils backed Lansing lefthander Logan Barnard with three innings of scoreless relief in the 6-3 nightcap. Barnard (2-1) worked six innings, allowing three runs on five hits and striking out four before Chase Terrell pitched one inning of relief and Eli Tormes two, each giving up one hit.

Ray Paniagua led a 9-hit attack, driving in two runs with a triple and double, Cole Dawson and Brendyn Bard added a pair of singles. Paniagua tripled in KCKCC’s first run in the first and drove in the fifth run with a sacrifice fly in the third. The Blue Devils scored three runs in the second on a single by Caleb Troutt, two walks and Dawson’s 2-run single.

The Blue Devils pounded out 31 hits in 14-7 and 18-0 wins at Rockhurst. Tre Simmons (3-1) allowed five hits and two runs before Britt Owens finished up in the opener. Gabriel Ramos (1-2) allowed just two hits in six innings in the nightcap. Terrell and Tormes each pitched one inning of hitless relief; Hunter Cashero gave up Rockhurst’s third hit in the ninth.

Caleb Adams had three hits; Sole Silbowski and Bard two each and Beau Grable tripled in the first game. Five Blue Devils had a least two hits in the second game led by Paniagua, who drove in four runs with a double and single, and Adams, who doubled and singled and drove in three. Caleb Brown, Ethan Beagle and Dawson each added two hits and Hardy Bergman doubled to lead a 19-hit attack.
