Deep KCKCC men’s soccer team opens at home Thursday night

The 2019 men’s soccer season at Kansas City Kansas Community College explodes with a bang. Three home games in a span of 11 days starting Thursday when the Blue Devils play host to State Fair.

Kickoff under the lights Thursday is set for 8 p.m. and will follow the KCKCC women’s opener against State Fair at 6 p.m. The men also will play host to Crowder Aug. 28 and Iowa Central Sept. 1 before heading into Jayhawk Conference action.

The busy start will give head coach Ruben Rodriguez and assistant Burke Slusher time to sort out what by all accounts is the deepest Blue Devil squad in years.

“With the exception of goalkeeper, we have returning starters at every position but also a group of very good freshmen,” said Rodriguez.

Fourteen sophomores return, most of whom started or played substantial minutes in last year’s 6-5 season. Whether they can hold off an influx of newcomers is yet to be determined.

“Good competition with a lot of new people,” Rodriguez said. “Everyone will be competing on a game by game basis. Every practice will feel like a tryout.”

With a 14-game schedule, the Blue Devil depth could be a season changer.

“In theory, we have enough depth to keep fresh players in the game at all times,” Slusher said.

The strength of the squad starts defensively led by veterans Stylianos Papadimitriou and Ignacio Sarasol at the center back position.

“The core of our defense,” Slusher said. “And we’ll be real competitive at the outside back positions.”

Sophomores Richard Bowman of Bishop Miege and Leonardo Notarnicola will be joined in the battle for starting positions by Brazilian Lucas Santos, Eduardo Lopez of Harmon, DeVante Ridley of Blue Valley Northwest and a trio of former Piper standouts, Johnathan Moon, Ronin Richardson and Jack Trumbo III.

There’s a wealth of international experience at midfield with veterans Miguel Merida, Vitor Lo, Nicolas Bosemediano, Alejandro Maillet, Marcos Cabral and Luis Alvarado of St. James Academy. Freshmen challengers include Jessy Zieta, Jorge Monferrer, Felipe Kerr and two graduates of Alta Vista High in Kansas City, Missouri, Carlos Rodriguez and Javier Blanco.

Marcos Cabral, Marcus Kawah, Cheslyn Ashby, Rodolfo Valiente, Leonardo Bonelli and redshirt Abdulrahman Khalid provide veteran experience at forward; Khalid setting out last season with an injury. Freshmen attackers include Jorge Fernandez of Wyandotte, Samba Gnokane and Elijah Bathily.

The fiercest competition may come at the goalkeeper position where three freshmen are neck and neck for the starting job – Christian Villegas of Turner, Chris Favela of Alta Vista and Bosco Pery of Madrid, Spain.

“All three are very good; extremely talented,” Rodriguez said.

In addition to four non-conference games, the Blue Devils will play home-and-home contests with Jayhawk rivals Johnson County, Neosho County, Allen County, Coffeyville and Cowley College.

Two years ago, the Blue Devils won the Jayhawk Conference and the Plains District championships to earn KCKCC’s first-ever berth in the NJCAA Division I national championship.

“It’s our goal every year,” Rodriguez said.

In the ever-changing world of college volleyball, there has been one constant in Mary Bruno-Ballou’s first eight years as head coach at Kansas City Kansas Community College – she’s never backed away from playing the toughest of opponents.

“Our strength of schedule is unmatched and right out of the gate we play three Top 20 teams including No. 2 Parkland, No 4. Kirkwood and No. 17 Illinois Central in our opening tournament this weekend,” Bruno-Ballou said.

The Blue Devils open the season in the McHenry Tournament Friday and Saturday in Sugar Grove, Illiois. KCKCC is also at Northeastern Oklahoma on Monday before the home opener Thursday, Aug. 29, against Ottawa junior varsity, the only junior varsity team on the schedule.

In all, KCKCC will play 10 of the teams ranked in the NJCAA’s Top 20 national poll including the top four ranked teams – No. 1 Coffeyville, No. 2 Parkland, No. 3 Johnson County and No. 4 Kirkland along with two other Jayhawk powers, No. 7 Highland and No. 8 Cowley.

“You only get better playing better teams,” Bruno-Ballou said. “For us to get out of our region we have to play the best teams because that’s what we go through in our conference. We could play a bunch of JV teams and get to 30 wins but that doesn’t get us out of our region and into the national tournament.”

Past records only accentuate the fact that the Blue Devils indeed play as difficult a schedule as any NJCAA Division II team in the nation.

In the last three seasons, only once did KCKCC lose to an unranked team. In a 19-16 season last year, 15 of the 16 losses came to teams ranked in the Top 20 in the nation at one time or another. Every loss in 2017 (13-15) came at the hands of a ranked team; same for 2016 when the Blue Devils were 19-15.

The difficulty starts in the Jayhawk, unquestionably the toughest conference in Division II. In both 2017 and 2018, seven Jayhawk teams were ranked in the Top 20 during the season.

Last year, national champion Coffeyville was ranked No. 1, Highland No. 3, Cowley No. 4 and Johnson County No. 5 in the final NJCAA poll. Of the 16 teams making the national tourney, KCKCC played nine.

In other tournament action this season, the Blue Devils will take on Coffeyville, Des Moines Area (DMAC) and Wabaunsee in their own KCKCC tournament Sept. 20-21 and national finalists Parkland, Moraine Valley and Lincoln Land in the Lincoln Land tourney in Springfield, Ill., Oct. 18-19.

The good news is the Blue Devils will take on all challengers with one of the deepest and most balanced teams in recent years. With eight returning sophomores, there’s experience at every position with seven freshmen challenging for playing time.

“Everyone on the roster will be competing for a starting position,” Bruno-Ballou said. The Blue Devils squad by position:

Outside hitters – Sophomores Tara Mattingly of Wichita Northwest, Madison Wright of Piper and Amilex Lopex, who was All-Region VI second team last year. They’re joined by versatile freshmen Cassidy Crist of DeSoto and Justice Davis of Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Right side – Sidelined by a knee injury last year, 6-3 Lauren Leavendusky of Holton is back for her final season and will be backed by Wright and freshmen Crist and Davis.

Middle blockers – Veterans Malaysia StClair of Beaumont, Texas, and Allayah Stillwell of Lee’s Summit will be joined by freshmen Michelle Dvorak of Park Hill North and McKenna Johnson of Christ Preparatory Academy in Lenexa.

Setters – Sophomore Gracie Golay of Wichita’s Trinity Academy and freshman Adriana Velez of Puerto Rico.

Defensive specialists – Natalia Vega Apointe returns and will be joined by frosh Julianie Laboy and Nicole Almestica. All are from Puerto Rico.

Preparation for the 2019 season by Bruno-Ballou and assistants Allyssa Lutgen and Dee Bruno began almost immediately after the 2018 season ended.

“We have a great corps of sophomore leaders who spent the entire spring season focusing on skills and establishing a team culture,” Bruno-Ballou said.

“In volleyball, one of the most important aspects is handling the first contact ball well and we’ve been focusing on that along with getting our hitters to swing big. We’re not the tallest team but very dynamic and quick and the versatility and athleticism they bring to practice and the effort they give is amazing.”

Last season, Kansas City Kansas Community College had one of the best defenses in the women’s division of the Jayhawk Conference.

“We were second right up until the last week of the season,” said fourth-year head coach Shawn Uhlenhake. “But we were also right near the bottom in goals scored.”

Uhlenhake hopes that can be rectified with a plethora of attackers who will open the season Thursday when the Blue Devils play host to State Fair Community College at 6 p.m. The Blue Devil men will also open their season Thursday against State Fair at 8 p.m.

“I think our strength will still be our defense but for once we have depth at forward,” Uhlenhake said. “We’ll have multiple players to throw at opposing defenses with hopes of finding the right combinations to give a big infusion to our offense.”

Sophomore Abby Petersen of Wichita South, who missed last season with a hip injury; and Kayla Deaver, a Lee’s Summit transfer from Central Methodist, are the most experienced of the forwards. They’ll be joined by promising freshmen Marissa Stratton and Madison Broeker, who were high school teammates at North Star High School in Lincoln, Nebraska; and Topeka recruits Jaidyn Yingling (Seaman) and Hannah Nystrom (West).

Returning starters Sydney Guerra of Perry, Iowa, and Alex Schemmel of DeSoto will anchor the defense along with sophomores Arlene Ruiz and Ruth Nunez, both of Liberal.

“We expect freshmen Katrina Sargent (Shawnee Mission South), Paige Liston (Bishop Carroll), Caroline Rutledge (Mill Valley) and Hailey Coates (Shawnee Mission Northwest) to compete for positions on the back line,” Uhlenhake said.

Guerra will be the captain of the Blue Devils. “She is very good at organizing the players in front of her, anticipates very well and is a great ball winner,” Uhlenhake said. The goalkeeping will be in the hands of Jaidyn Takaishi, a freshman from Olathe North.

Sophomores Karleigh Enyart of Olathe Northwest, Jasmine Diaz of DeSoto and Tina Alvarez of Seattle, Washington, will be joined at midfield by a quartet of promising freshmen including Kayley Pedersen of Shawnee Mission West, Corrine Hughes of Grain Valley, Bryanna Najera of Washington High School and Melisa Siegel of Endingen, Germany.

“Kayley Pedersen controls the ball very well at midfield and is able to transition our offense quickly and put our attackers in the best position to score,” Uhlenhake said.

The Blue Devils will open the season with three straight contests at home. Following Thursday’s opener against State Fair, the Blue Devils will play host to Iowa Central on Sunday, Sept. 1, before opening Jayhawk Conference play against perennial power Butler County Sept. 4.

“As is the case every year, we’ll have quite a few freshmen (14) but most of these freshmen have played at a pretty high level so the level of inexperience is not as pronounced as the last couple of years,” said Uhlenhake, who is again being assisted by Sara Matthews. “Our first conference game against Butler will be a really good early season test to see where we stand.”
