Hamlin wins Cup Series race at Kansas Speedway

Denny Hamlin took the checkered flag Thursday night at the Kansas Speedway in Kansas City, Kansas.

Fans were not allowed to attend the NASCAR Cup Series Super Start Batteries 400 race because of the risk of COVID-19.

The race was marked by a serious collision involving Ryan Preece on lap 181. His car flew through the air after a crash involving Christopher Bell, and Preece was able to walk away.

Brad Keselowski placed second in the race, with Martin Truex Jr. third. The top 10 was rounded out by Kevin Harvick, fourth; Erik Jones, fifth; Aric Almirola, sixth; Cole Custer, seventh; Alex Bowman, eighth; Kurt Busch, ninth; and William Byron, 10th.

Racing continues at Kansas Speedway on Friday and Saturday. Fans are not allowed at the speedway. The remaining schedule:

NASCAR Cup Series racing tonight at Kansas Speedway

NASCAR Cup Series racing resumes tonight at the Kansas Speedway in Kansas City, Kansas, but it will be different from all other races held there.

There will be no fans at the racetrack in Kansas City, Kansas, tonight because of the risk of COVID-19.

The NASCAR Cup Series Super Start Batteries 400 will begin at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, July 23, at the Kansas Speedway and will be carried on NBCSN, which is on Spectrum Cable channel 55 and Google Fiber channel 203 in Wyandotte County.

Among those racing in Kansas City, Kansas, this week will be Clint Bowyer, an Emporia, Kansas, native who will be driving the No. 14 Mustang in the Stewart-Haas team.

• Friday, July 24, 9 p.m., ARCA Menards Series Dawn 150 (150 miles), FS1 channel.

Kansas Speedway race to be run without fans

The Kansas Speedway race that was rescheduled for July will be run without fans, according to a statement by Kansas Speedway officials.

The Kansas Speedway races include a NASCAR Cup Series race on Thursday, July 23. Races will be held July 23-July 25 at the Speedway.

The statement from Pat Warren, Kansas Speedway president, posted on the speedway’s website:

“Over the past month, we have worked closely with public health officials, medical experts as well as state and federal officials to determine if we could run our rescheduled July NASCAR weekend with fans in attendance. After careful and extensive consideration for the health and safety of our fans and the local community, we determined that the most prudent course of action would be to host the races without fans. While it was a difficult decision, the well-being of everyone who comes to our venue is paramount. We appreciate the patience and support from our fans, and look forward to our Fall NASCAR weekend, October 16-18.”

In another announcement, Kansas Speedway stated that O’Reilly Auto Parts will be the entitlement sponsor for the July NASCAR Cup Series race. The race will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, July 23. It will be carried on NBCSN.
