KCK man charged in fatal shooting of woman

A 31-year-old Kansas City, Kan., man has been charged with the early-morning July 28 fatal shooting of a woman, as well as endangering the lives of three children found in the residence, according to Jackson County, Mo., Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker.

Derrick A. Williams, 31, faces a second-degree murder charge, three counts of armed criminal action, and three counts of endangering the welfare of a child, according to Jackson County Circuit Court documents.

According to court records, Kansas City, Mo., police responded to a residence on Independence Avenue about 5 a.m. July 28 and found the defendant, naked, in front of the building. He said he had shot a woman, officers stated. Officers believed the man was under the influence of narcotics. Police found a handgun and three children inside crying. One told an officer, “He killed my mom.” After he allegedly killed the woman, the defendant is alleged to have put the gun in the mouth of one of the child victims and hit one of the other children in the head.

Prosecutors have requested a bond of $300,000.

Crews inspecting Platte Purchase Bridge

Crews closed the northbound and southbound lanes of U.S. 69 Platte Purchase Bridge over the Missouri River starting at 8 a.m. July 25, and it will be closed through 6 a.m. Tuesday, July 26, to perform bridge inspections.

According to Missouri highway authorities, the bridge will be open from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. Tuesday, July 26, then it will close again from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily beginning Tuesday, July 26, through Thursday, July 28.

Work was originally scheduled for 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. beginning Monday, July 25, and continuing through Thursday, July 28, only. Motorists will need to find an alternate route, according to highway officials. All work is weather dependent.

This is part of replacing the current U.S. 69 Highway Bridge over the Missouri River, according to a spokesman. A new structure will be constructed in its place and will include multiple lanes and bike-pedestrian access. It will be open to traffic in December 2016.

Kansas City, Mo., bank robber who threatened to ‘shoot up the place’ sentenced to more than eight years in prison

A bank robber who threated to “shoot up the place,” was sentenced Monday to 100 months in federal prison, acting U.S. Attorney Tom Beall said.

Robert Robinson, 42, Kansas City, Mo., pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Kansas City, Kan., to three counts of bank robbery. In his plea, Robinson admitted that on May 30, 2014, he robbed the Commerce Bank at 9501 Antioch Road in Overland Park, Kan. At the counter he pulled out a blue file folder and opened it, revealing a note that read: “Put on top of this note all 20s, 50s 100s or I will start shooting up the place.”

He also admitted to two other bank robberies: One on May 22, 2014, at the Bank of America at 15811 Metcalf Avenue in Overland Park; and the other on May 30, 2014, at Commerce Bank at 3606 Frederick Avenue in St. Joseph, Mo.

Beall commended the FBI and Assistant U.S. Attorney Jabari Wamble for their work on the case.
