Benefit blues festival to be Sunday

The Amazing Grace Blues Festival will be held from 2 to 11 p.m. Sunday, May 17, at BB’s Lawnside BBQ, 1205 E. 85th St., in Kansas City, Mo.

A fundraiser for the KCK Public Schools Foundation for Excellence, the event’s admission will be $10. There will be other fundraisers at the benefit, including a silent auction.

The music benefit is named for Amazing Grace Harris, a Kansas City, Kan., resident who was the longtime cook at the Grand Emporium Saloon (1985-2004) in Kansas City, Mo., and former proprietor of H & M BBQ, which was located near 13th Street and Walker in Kansas City, Kan. H & M featured late night and after hours blues music performances and jams for several years in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

All bands are donating their performances to the event on May 17.The groups that will be performing include: Brody Buster Band, Millage Gilbert Band, Lonesome Hank and the Heartaches, John Paul’s Flying Circus, 51% Blues Band, The Waxed Tadpoles, and Rockn Rick Patterson.

Mental Health Month activities planned in May

Area organizations are sponsoring Mental Health Month activities this month.

“It’s OK to Talk Mental Health Matters in Kansas City” is the theme of a community event to be started at the Kauffman Foundation Conference Center, 4801 Rockhill Road, Kansas City, Mo.

The events are designed to encourage people to talk about conditions such as depression anxiety, obsessive behaviors and eating disorders.

One of the speakers at this event will include Anthony Davis, former Kansas City Chiefs player, who will address the importance of reaching out to someone with a mental illness. Davis will speak at 1:30 p.m. May 6 at the Kauffman Foundation Conference Center.

According to community organizations, untreated mental illness is a serious health problem that affects many lives in the region and carries a significant social and economic cost.

Kansas City, Mo., man pleads guilty to driving getaway car in five bank robberies

A Kansas City, Mo., man pleaded guilty Thursday to federal charges of taking part in five bank robberies in Kansas and Missouri, U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom said.

Dale Williamson, 35, Kansas City, Mo., pleaded guilty to five counts of bank robbery. In his plea, he admitted driving a getaway car in the following bank robberies.

• May 12, 2014, First Bank of Missouri, 7001 North Oak Trafficway, Gladstone, Mo.
• May 22, 2014, Bank of America, 15811 Metcalf Ave. Overland Park, Kan.
• May 30, 2014, Commerce Bank, 9501 Antioch Road, Overland Park, Kan.
• May 30, 2014, Commerce Bank, 3606 Frederick Ave., St. Joseph, Mo.

Sentencing is set for July 6. Both parties have agreed to recommend a sentence of 4.5 years in federal prison. Grissom commended the FBI and Assistant U.S. Attorney Jabari Wamble for their work on the case.
