The Kansas City, Kansas, Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Celebration will take place at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 20, at the Reardon Civic Center, 5th and Minnesota, Kansas City, Kansas. The theme will be “Injustice Anywhere Is a Threat to Justice Everywhere.” The guest speaker will be Monsignor Stuart Swetland, president of Donnelly College, Kansas City, Kansas. The event is open to the public.

Open Door Baptist Church, 3033 N. 103rd Terrace, Kansas City, Kansas, will meet for Sunday worship at 10:30 a.m. Dec. 15. Sunday school is at 9 a.m.

Christmas in Kolograd Dance, held by St. John Catholic Club, will be held after the 5:15 p.m. Mass on Saturday, Dec. 14. The dance will be at St. John the Baptist auditorium, 414 Barnett, Kansas City, Kansas. Music will be by Orchestra Barca. Tickets will be $10, adults; and free for children 12 and younger. The admission price includes dessert featuring povitica from MeMa’s Bakery and Strawberry Hill Povitica. Cobanac, sausage sandwiches, beer and soda will be available for purchase.

St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 1300 N. 18th St., Kansas City, Kansas, will observe the fourth Sunday in Advent at 10 a.m. Dec. 22. The vestry, the official governing board of the parish, will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 19. Christmas Eve services will begin with special Christmas music including carols at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 24. Christmas Day services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 25.

Stony Point Christian Church, 149 S. 78th St., Kansas City, Kansas, will hold Sunday School at 9 a.m. and a worship service at 10:15 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 15. A congregational meeting is planned after the Dec. 15 service. The church is planning a Christmas Eve candlelight service at 6 p.m. Dec. 24.

Wyandotte United Methodist Church, 7901 Oakland Ave., Kansas City, Kansas, will meet for worship services on Dec. 15 at 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m., with Sunday school at 9:45 a.m. and the youth group at 1:30 p.m.

Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 2203 Parallel, Kansas City, Kansas, will celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe with a novena at 7 p.m. Dec. 3 through Dec. 11, followed by Mass at 7 p.m. Dec. 12. Music will begin at 5:30 p.m., in Spanish.


A Nativity Display will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, at the Cathedral of St. Peter Parish, 409 N. 15th St., Kansas City, Kansas. More than 200 Nativity sets will be on display. There is no admission charge and refreshments will be served. A bake sale also will be held.


Christ the King Catholic Church, 3024 N. 53rd St., Kansas City, Kansas, will celebrate the feast of the Immaculate Conception at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 9. Christ the King will have a Mass at 8:30 a.m. Dec. 12 celebrating the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

The Kansas City, Kansas, Community Orchestra will perform a Christmas concert from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 12, at London Heights Baptist Church, 734 N. 78th St., Kansas City, Kansas. The orchestra will perform holiday classics. The concert is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be available after the concert.

The third week in Advent will be observed at the 10 a.m. service; a luncheon in the parish hall will follow. This also will be “Consecration Sunday.” Members will reflect on the importance of giving to the church as the parish prepares for its 2020 budget.
