Equal pay webinar for women to be July 15

An Equal Pay webinar for women will be presented from 11 a.m. to noon July 15.

The webinar, a presentation over the telephone through a conference call, is for people who may be employers, advocates, individual working women, legislators, educators, career counselors and college students.

The webinar is free, and requires registration on a first-come, first-served basis.

The webinar is intended to raise the awareness regarding the pay gap women still face compared to men and help persons understand women’s rights under certain laws that govern equal pay and compensation.

The webinar presenters include the U.S. Department of Labor, Women’s Bureau, Missouri Women’s Council, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), Missouri Commission on Human Rights, U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), and American Association of University Women (AAUW).

Topics to be discussed at the webinar include:
• Understand the Equal Pay Act
• Gain a better understanding of federal discrimination laws enforced by the EEOC
• Obtain statistics and information on a state and federal level regarding equal pay discrimination
• Acquire knowledge of wage and salary information that can be used in negotiations with employers.

SAF-K Spirit Race 5K run-walk Saturday
Local high school athletes are participating in the SAF-K Spirit Race 5K on Saturday, June 21, at CommunityAmerica Ballpark, 1800 Village West Parkway, Kansas City, Kan. . Proceeds go to support concussion screenings and education, high school athletic trainers, and area high school student athletes.

Flying disc tournament planned June 20-22

The Professional Disc Golf Association and the Kansas City Flying Disc Club are sponsoring the 2014 Kansas City Wide Open from June 20 to 22 at five different disc golf courses around the Kansas City area. The courses used will be Blue Valley Park, Swope Park, Rosedale, Water Works Park and Wyandotte County Park. The tournament is sanctioned by the Professional Disc Golf Association. The tournament format will have competitors playing one round of 18 holes on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The Pro lead group will begin final round play on Sunday, June 22, at 3:30 p.m. at Swope Park in Kansas City, Mo. Admission is free.

Democrats to meet Saturday
The Wyandotte County Third Saturday Democratic Breakfast will meet Saturday, June 21, at the Eisenhower Room, Hilton Garden Inn, 520 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kan. Shawnee County District Attorney Chad Taylor, candidate for U.S. Senate, will be the guest speaker. The breakfast buffet begins at 8:15 a.m., and the forum begins at 9:15 a.m. The cost of the breakfast buffet is $10; or $7 for students and those on limited incomes. Summer concert to be June 21 at Legends
Dave and Buster’s Summer Concert Series will be at 9 p.m. Saturday, June 21, on the rooftop patio at The Legends Outlets. The State Line will perform from 9 p.m. to close June 21. Different bands will play on Saturdays through September, excluding July 5.

‘Luau with Love’ raises funds for emergency shelter for children
On June 21, parents of the St. Patrick Class of 2009 will commemorate Robert Zevenbergen, 20, with “Remembering Robert: A Luau with Love” to raise funds to construct a new emergency shelter for Wyandotte County children in crisis. The event is scheduled from 6 to 10 p.m. June 21 at the St. Patrick Parish Center, 94th and State Avenue, Kansas City, Kan. Tickets for the dinner are available at $25 a person. T-Bones to play Laredo
