The Kansas City, Kan., Public Library’s summer reading program has started signing up readers. The program runs from June 1 to July 31. Participate at any of the five library branches. Free fireworks display planned
A free community fireworks display is planned July 3, after dark, at Pierson Park, South 55th and Douglas, Kansas City, Kan. It is sponsored by the Turner Recreation Commission.
Free summer movies offered
The Legends 14 Theatres will present “The Curse of the Were-Rabbit,” rated G, and “The Croods,” rated PG, at 10 a.m. July 8, 9 and 10. Admission is free. All ages and groups are welcome. Doors open at 9 a.m. Seating is limited to availability. The current feature films are not included in the free admission, and the schedule is subject to change.
Blood drive scheduled

Leavenworth Road Association to meet July 8
The Leavenworth Road Association will meet July 8 at Trinity Community Church, lower level, 5010 Parallel Parkway, Kansas City, Kan. The social hour and potluck dinner will be at 6 p.m. followed by the meeting at 7 p.m. The guest speaker will be David Mehlhaff, communications officer of the Board of Public Utilities, who will discuss upcoming projects on Leavenworth Road.
Program offered on discipline
“Discipline Help for Parents,” a free four-part program, will be presented on four Wednesdays, from 9:30 to 11 a.m. July 9-30, at Keeler Women’s Center, 2220 Central Ave., Kansas City, Kan. Mental Health First Aid Day planned
Kansas City’s first Mental Health First Aid Day is planned for Thursday, July 10. Six sites throughout metropolitan Kansas City, including one in Kansas City, Kan., are participating in the event. It is sponsored by the Metropolitan Council of Community Mental Health Centers. The goal of the event is to teach mental health first aid and youth mental health first aid courses at no cost to more than 250 people. It would be the largest number of people to train at one time in the metropolitan area. In Kansas City, Kan., a class will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 10 at the Kansas City, Kan., Public School Central Office, 2010 N. 59th St., Kansas City, Kan. Participants will learn what to do if an adult or child is experiencing a mental health crisis. The course teaches about the signs and symptoms of mental illness, gives confidence to reach out to people in need, and skills to respond to a mental health crisis. Participants will receive a manual and certificate upon successful completion of the course, and information about accessing local services. A continental breakfast and lunch will be provided. UG Ethics Commission to meet July 10

‘Rosedale 101’ to be July 10

Athletic field to be dedicated July 12; sports events for youth planned
A punt, pass and kick football event, plus a soccer event, will be held for a community athletic field on Saturday, July 12. The ribbon-cutting ceremony and youth events will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 12, at 1900 N. 9th St., Kansas City, Kan. It is open to the public. Unified Government Commissioner Tarence Maddox is planning to be at the event. The field has been restored and will be dedicated in a ceremony July 12. The field is being dedicated to coach Adrion Roberson. Immediately after the program, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., youth will participate in the NFL Punt, Pass and Kick event. There also will be a soccer match between the Juba Boyz and Somali Soccer of KC. The NFL Punt, Pass and Kick event is free and open to boys and girls ages 6 to 15. Registration is requested by July 7 to nflppk.com. Youth must pre-register to participate. No walk-ins will be allowed. Participants will be divided into five age groups. Cleats will not be allowed.
Live at Legends free concert to be July 12
The Legends Outlets, I-70 and I-435, will sponsor free family friendly concerts on some Saturday evenings during July and August in front of the center courtyard fountain. The Zeros will perform from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, July 12. The Live at the Legends summer concert series will feature local and regional talent performing popular pop, classic rock and country hits from the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, and today. The concert series will take place at the center of the Civic Courtyard Fountain in front of Phoenix Theaters Legends 14.
Summer concert to be July 12 at Legends
Dave and Buster’s Summer Concert Series will continue at 9 p.m. Saturday, July 12, on the rooftop patio at The Legends Outlets. Pyromaniac will perform from 9 p.m. to close July 12. Different bands will play on Saturdays through September, excluding July 5.
Museum plans lock-in
An all-night lock-in is planned from 7 p.m. July 18 to 8 a.m. July 19 at the Wyandotte County Historical Museum, 126th and State. The event on July 18 is for girls ages 8 to 12. A safe night at the museum, tour, hands-on projects, evening snacks and a movie are planned. Boys will have a similar event on July 25. The cost is $25 per child. One adult must attend. Job readiness skills discussed
“Professional Etiquette via Life Skills for Job Readiness” is a workshop designed to help women assess their skills, set goals, and prepare for the interview and the job. The program is recommended for women seeking entry level positions or women who have had a hard time keeping a job. Participants will leave better prepared for an interview and feeling much more confident in their ability to find a job that matches their interest and skills. The workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, July 24, at Keeler Women’s Center, a ministry of the Benedictine Sisters of Mount St. Scholastica, 2220 Central Ave., Kansas City, Kan. Christmas in July event planned
The Unified Government Parks and Recreation Department will have a Christmas in July event from 4 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. July 26 at Wyandotte County Lake, 91st and Leavenworth Road. The event will include activities for children, a disc jockey, food, and a parade of pontoon boats at 8:15 p.m. The event is free to the public.

Concert scheduled July 31 at outdoor theater
As part of the Warped Tour, Of Mice and Men is coming to Bonner Springs, Kan., July 31 to play Cricket Wireless Amphitheater, 126th and State Avenue. Some of the albums of the heavy rocker group are “The Flood” and “Restoring Force.”
African-American Art Festival planned Aug. 9
The MoKan African-American Art Festival will be held from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, at Quindaro Park, 35th and Sewell, Kansas City, Kan. Those attending the free event may bring a blanket, enjoy artwork, stilt walkers Gullah basket weathers, African drummers and dancers, food and vendors. End of Summer Carnival Aug. 9 at library
The Schlagle Library at Wyandotte County Lake Park, 91st and Leavenworth Road, will hold an End of Summer Carnival from 10 a.m. to 2 pm. Saturday, Aug. 9. The family event will include games, food, a silent auction and “Doo-Dad Mike,” a musician performing at 11 a.m. The event is free. There is a donation for games. The Leavenworth Road Association will provide lunch and snacks for purchase. Silent auction donors include T-Bones, Kansas City Royals, Kansas City Chiefs, Great Wolf Lodge, Kansas City Zoo, Paradise Park, Sunflower Golf Course and Science City.
Dotte Trot to benefit SAFE fund
The Dotte Trot, a 5K and 10K run, will be run at 8 a.m. Sept. 27 at Wyandotte County Lake park, 9100 Leavenworth Road, Kansas City, Kan. All proceeds from the run benefit the Surviving Spouse and Family Endowment Fund. SAFE supports the families of law enforcement officers, firefighters and emergency service personnel in the Kansas City metropolitan area who have died while protecting the community and citizens.
