Leavenworth Road parade to be Sunday, Sept. 21

The 29th annual Leavenworth Road parade will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 21.

The parade route starts at 72nd and Leavenworth Road and continues to 51st and Leavenworth Road. Some of the walkers and marchers will join the parade near 64th Street.

“It’s going to be nice weather, decent temperatures, sunshine, and no rain. Perfect parade weather,” said Lou Braswell, executive director of the Leavenworth Road Association.

The parade will include Washington, Wyandotte and Schlagle high school bands, four horse units, antique cars and a total of 50 entries, Braswell said.

As in last year’s parade, the Kansas City Kansas Community College men’s basketball team is planning to dribble down Leavenworth Road, shooting basketballs at a goal in the back of a truck, she said.

The judges’ stand will be located in front of Welborn Elementary School.

This year, Unified Government employees will sponsor a fundraiser for United Way before the parade at Sunset Plaza, 6000 Leavenworth Road, she said. A children’s bounce house and craft booths are planned.

Blessed Sacrament Church, 2203 Parallel, will have a parish fiesta from after the 4 p.m. Mass to 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20. After a bilingual Mass at 4 p.m. there will be games, booths and entertainment.

Holy Family Catholic Church will celebrate Slovenefest from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, on the Monsignor Mejak Hall, gym and school grounds, 513 Ohio, Kansas City, Kan. The event is dedicated to the late Don Lipovac, accordionist, in recognition of his contributions to the community. Slovenefest begins with a Mass at 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, at Holy Family Catholic Church, 274 Orchard St., Kansas City, Kan. The festival, after the Mass, includes games, souvenirs, a silent auction, and a Slovenian dinner.

The Five Loaves Food Ministry is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Sept. 27, at Judson Baptist Church, 8300 State Ave., Kansas City, Kan. The food pantry will provide one box of healthy food for families in need.

“Scripture Study, Bible Sharing and Reflection, Lectio and Journaling,” a regular weekly series facilitated by pastoral minister, Heather Neds, is offered at Keeler Women’s Center, 2220 Central Ave., Kansas City, Kan., from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Wednesdays. Open Door Baptist Church, 3033 N. 103rd Terrace, is preparing for its 50th year celebration on Sunday, Sept. 28. A potluck-fellowship is planned after the 10:30 a.m. service. A variety show also is planned as part of the celebration.

St. Martin Lutheran Church will sponsor its eighth annual German Fest from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, at the church, 13849 Hollingsworth Road (the corner of Highway 7 and Hollingsworth Road), Kansas City, Kan. The program features live music from the Grisnik Orchestra and the German Dance Group, “Blautaler Schuhplattler Dancers.” There will be face painting, inflatables, and children’s activities. The event includes a beer garden, silent auction for charities, tethered hot air balloon rides and hayrides, weather permitting. A dinner of roasted pork, brats, homemade sauerkraut, warm German potato salad, dessert and more is planned. There are hot dog meals available for children. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children under 12.

St. Mary – St. Anthony Church will hold a Fall Afternoon of bingo starting at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 5, in Bishop Forst Hall, 615 N. 7th St., Kansas City, Kan. A $5 ticket admission will receive a bingo card, free desserts, popcorn and coffee. Beer and soda will be available for purchase. St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 1300 N. 18th St., and the Historic Westheight Neighborhood Association are planning to celebrate Oct. 5 with a St. Francis Festival with a blessing of animals, food, music, games, worship service outside and more.

Wyandotte United Methodist Church, 7901 Oakland, will hold a fall garage sale, bake sale and barbecue from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sept. 20. Food available for lunch includes hamburgers, hot dogs and brats. Homemade baked goods will be available. There will be a variety of items for sale.

Renaissance Festival continues on weekends
The Kansas City Renaissance Festival continues on Saturday and Sunday at the festival grounds at 628 N. 126th St. (126th and State), Bonner Springs. The festival is the re-creation of a 16th century English village. Music, food, crafts, shows and other entertainment are featured at the festival, which runs on weekends through Oct. 14. Benefit Dice Run kicks off Saturday
The Dice Run benefiting Bonner Springs High School Project Grad will be held at noon Saturday, Sept. 20. Registration is from 10 a.m. to noon. The event starts at Kobi’s in Bonner Springs. The registration fee is $25 per driver or $40 per driver and rider. Each paying driver and rider will receive a T-shirt. Vehicles of all kinds are welcome. Bikers for Babies Sept. 21 to raise funds for March of Dimes
Bikers for Babies will be held Sept. 21, starting from the Kansas Speedway in Kansas City, Kan., about 11 a.m. Sunday. The 100-mile bike trip is a fundraiser for the March of Dimes. Program for professionals to promote recovery from addictions
“Interventions: a Primer for Professionals,” will be offered from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Monday, Sept. 22 at the Keeler Women’s Center, 2220 Central Ave., Kansas City, Kan. Social workers, counselors, clergy and other professionals can earn 1.5 continuing education unit credits. The workshop will offer information, discussion and role-playing, with Marla Looper.

Dotte Trot to benefit SAFE fund
The Dotte Trot, a 5K and 10K run, will be run at 8 a.m. Sept. 27 at Wyandotte County Lake Park, 9100 Leavenworth Road, Kansas City, Kan. All proceeds from the run benefit the Surviving Spouse and Family Endowment Fund. SAFE supports the families of law enforcement officers, firefighters and emergency service personnel in the Kansas City metropolitan area who have died while protecting the community and citizens. Workshop offered on credit protection

NAACP to meet Oct. 7
The Kansas City, Kan., Branch NAACP will meet Tuesday, Oct. 7, at the Bethany Medical Office Building, 21 N. 12th St., Kansas City, Kan., in the second-floor meeting room. The Executive Committee will meet at 6 p.m., followed by the general membership meeting at 7 p.m. At 7 p.m., there will be a report of the Nomination Committee, receipt of nominations by petition, and election of the Election Supervisory Committee. All members whose membership is current by April 1, 2014, may be nominated for office or as an “at large” member of the Executive Committee.
