Thursday’s events

6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, Village West Parade of Heroes, at Village West Parkway to Stadium Drive. The parade is located at the Village West area near The Legends Outlets. The parade is presented by the Village West Rotary Club.

5 and 7 p.m., Unified Government Commission to meet, Thursday, City Hall, 701 N. 7th St., Kansas City, Kan.

8 p.m. Thursday, Kansas City Royals play at California Angels. Game 1 of the post-season American League division playoff is at Angels Stadium at Anaheim, Calif. The game will be seen and heard on TBS-TV and on ESPN radio.

KCKCC vocal music prepares for GEMS concert

The Kansas City Kansas Community College Vocal Music Department is inviting the community out to support the college’s choirs during the upcoming GEMS concert.

The concert is at 3 p.m. Oct. 12 at St. Patrick’s Church, 1086 N. 94th St. in Kansas City, Kan. It is free and open to the public.

The concert will feature the Community Choir and the Chamber Chair as they perform works by Handel, Rutter, Mealor, Whitacre, Hogan and more. GEMS is a showcase of choral music (both well-known and unknown) from different countries and cultures. These countries include England, Russia, Germany and the United States. John Stafford, choral director and professor at KCKCC, said the music performed at the concert are or will eventually become staples of the choral repertoire.

Parade of Heroes to be Oct. 2

The eighth annual Parade of Heroes will take place at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, at Village West Parkway to Stadium Drive, Kansas City, Kan.

Presented by the Village West Rotary Club, the parade will honor men and women in uniform.

The parade marshal will be Clausie Smith, former mayor of Bonner Springs.

The parade will include vintage cars, military vehicles, marching bands and police and fire entries.

Proceeds from the parade will benefit PACES Robert’s Place for children in crisis.
