Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 2203 Parallel, will hold a fall dinner from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 16, in the Family Center. There will be a turkey dinner with the trimmings. There also is a fundraiser planned.

“Scripture Study, Bible Sharing and Reflection, Lectio and Journaling,” a regular weekly series facilitated by pastoral minister, Heather Neds, is offered at Keeler Women’s Center, 2220 Central Ave., Kansas City, Kan., from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Wednesdays. An open house and ribbon cutting for Learning to Earning will be held at 4 p.m. Monday, Nov. 17, at 750 Armstrong Ave., Kansas City, Kan. Metro Lutheran Ministry is opening the new location, which has a financial literacy focus. The program is designed to help persons manage their lives and solve problems that many low and moderate-income persons face. Personalized coaching, assistance with work placements, help in completing the general education degree, as well as support services, will be available. Open Door Baptist Church, 3033 N. 103rd Terrace, is holding a raggedy doll ministry Christmas project workshop from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday evenings, Nov. 18 and Dec. 2, in Room 128. Stony Point is planning an all-church Thanksgiving dinner at 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 23, in the Cole Activity Center. Families will bring a side dish or dessert.

St. Patrick Catholic Church Holiday Bazaar will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 22 in the Parish Center at 94th and State Avenue. Handmade items and homemade foods will be featured.

Bishop Ward play scheduled Nov. 15
Bishop Ward High School’s Drama Club is presenting “The Life and Times of Princess Sophia” by Douglas Clinton. Sponsored by drama teacher Kelly Lipovitz, this comedy opened Nov. 13 with a full crowd and lots of laughs. The show will continue at 7 p.m. Nov. 15 in the Willard L. Phillips Memorial Auditorium at the school, 708 N. 18th, Kansas City, Kan.

Piper plans to present musical Saturday
The musical “Grease” is scheduled to be performed Saturday at Piper High School by the Piper High School theater department. Admission is $5 for students and $7 for adults. There is one performance left, on Saturday, as other performances were held Wednesday through Friday. The performance is scheduled at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15.

Entertainment bus tour planned Nov. 18
The Past, Present and Future Entertainment Bus Tour will leave at 8 a.m. Nov. 18 from the Wyandotte County Museum, 631 N. 126th St., Bonner Springs, and return at noon. The tour will cover entertainment sites in Wyandotte County. The cost of the tour is $20, and advance reservations are necessary to 913-573-5002. Those attending should arrive early.

ServSafe Course to be Nov. 18
A Food Handlers ServSafe Course will be held from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, at the K-State Research and Extension Office, 1216 N. 79th St., Kansas City, Kan. The class is for anyone who works in food service or is interested in food service employment. That includes day cares, schools, restaurants, casinos, nursing homes or anyone who handles any type of food service or group meals. KCKCC bone marrow registration drive to be Nov. 19
Kansas City Kansas Community College’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa is sponsoring a Bone Marrow Registration Drive Nov. 19 on the KCKCC Main Campus. This drive gives those individuals between the ages of 18-55 who are serious about wanting to save a life, a chance to register as a potential bone marrow donor. The registration drive is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. Wed., Nov. 19, in Lower Jewell building on the campus, 7250 State Ave. The drive is sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa.

Turkey Games to be Nov. 19 at KCKCC
The KCKCC Turkey Games will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19, at the Wellness and Fitness Center on the KCKCC campus, 7250 State Ave. The event is free and open to the public. Among the events at the Turkey Games are Pilgrim Broom Pushin,’ the Turkey Obstacle Course, Turkey Tossin’, Turkey Rollin’ Bowlin’, Pilgrim Sprintin’, Turkey Tailin’ and Turkey Shootin’. No actual turkeys will be used in the competition. Medicine balls will represent the turkeys. Registration for the 2014 Turkey Games can be completed at the Wellness Center front desk or by calling 913-288-7610. Registration can be completed until the start of the event.

Lung cancer program planned Nov. 19

Those who are affected by lung cancer, or at risk for it, may attend a free program, “Shine a Light on Lung Cancer,” from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Nov. 19 at the University of Kansas Cancer Center, Richard and Annette Bloch Cancer Care Pavilion Atrium, 2330 Shawnee Mission Parkway, Westwood, Kan. Participants will learn about the latest advancements in lung cancer treatment while connecting with others and hearing stories of survival. AARP to meet a week early, Nov. 20

Because of the holiday, the Center City Chapter AARP No. 1544 will meet one week earlier at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 20, at the Pat Hanlon Center, 11th and Ridge. The chapter will continue an in-depth review of local family caregiving alternatives, experiences with aging health issues and services led by Alma Clark and Betty Reynolds. Members will prepare a list of things they are grateful for in the annual Thankfulness tree ceremony and share holiday memories and preparations. New and potential members are encouraged to attend. Free Kansas City Jazz Orchestra concert to be Nov. 20 at KCKCC
As part of the second annual Bop in the Dotte, Kansas City, Kan., Public Library is holding a free concert by the Kansas City Jazz Orchestra on Thursday, Nov. 20. The concert will take place at 7 p.m. in the KCKCC Performing Arts Center, 7250 State Ave. Before the concert, there will be a reception with punch and cookies in the lobby of the Performing Arts Center. The Home and Community Group Greater Kansas City Association of Family and Consumer Sciences will meet at 11 a.m. Nov. 21 at Bass Pro, Independence, Mo. The program will be by the University of Missouri Human and Environmental Sciences Program.

Strawberry Hill Museum to open for holidays Nov. 22

The Strawberry Hill Museum, 720 N. 4th St., Kansas City, Kan., will open for the holidays on Saturday, Nov. 22, and will remain open through Sunday, Jan. 26. The museum, decorated in Victorian style, is open from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, with special tours available by appointment. The cost of a tour is $7 for adults and $3 for children 6-12. St. Nicholas will visit the museum from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6. Nighttime tours will be available at 6 p.m. Fridays Nov. 28, Dec. 5 and Dec. 19, and reservations are required. The cost is $15 for the nighttime tours, which includes refreshments and dessert. Legends tree lighting ceremony to be Nov. 22
The Legends Outlets will hold the annual Legendary Lighting Ceremony at 7:45 p.m. Nov. 22 at the shopping center, I-70 and I-435, Kansas City, Kan. Musicians will play holiday music from 6 to 7:30 p.m., Santa Claus will light the holiday lights, and a synchronized light display will begin. There is no admission charge. Thanksgiving Breakfast Dance scheduled
The historical Thanksgiving Breakfast Dance will be held at 10 a.m. Nov. 27 at the Kansas National Guard Armory, 18th and Ridge, Kansas City, Kan. The dance will feature blues artists Latimore singing “Let’s Straighten It Out,” “Bad Risk” and “Sunshine Lady.” There also will be performances by Lady Vivian and Rockin’ Rick. Downtown KCK holiday lighting ceremony to be Dec. 5
Mayor Mark Holland’s Downtown Kansas City, Kan., Holiday Lighting Ceremony will be held from 4 to 7:30 p.m. just outside City Hall, 701 N. 7th St., KCK. The lighting will be at 7:15 p.m. Events include the tree lighting, holiday movies, crafts for children, and performances by choirs, bands and dance groups. Santa and Mrs. Claus will meet with children. Food vendors will be selling food and refreshments. Admission is free; concessions are available for purchase.

Christmas social event planned Dec. 9

The Leavenworth Road Association will hold a Christmas Social from 6 to 8 p.m. Dec. 9 at Eisenhower Recreation Center, 2901 N. 72nd, Kansas City, Kan. Those attending should bring a snack to share with the group. They also should bring a new unwrapped toy or game to be donated to the Community Policing Christmas Adoption Project. Autumn Arts Fest planned Nov. 15
The Autumn Arts Fest is planned Nov. 15 at the Bonner Springs District Activity Center (YMCA), 410 N. Bluegrass Drive, Bonner Springs. Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 15. Local organizations to assist in open enrollment in the Health Insurance Marketplace
Organizations in the Greater Kansas City area, including the Rosedale Development Association and Enroll Wyandotte, will hold special events on Saturday, Nov. 15, to kick off the first day of open enrollment this year in the federal Health Insurance Marketplace. The organizations will hold public education events, open houses and free health fairs to inform uninsured and underinsured residents about coverage options available for 2015. Federal navigators and certified application counselors will staff the events to answer questions about health insurance, set up appointments and provide application assistance to individuals seeking to enroll in the marketplace. Free kidney screening, flu vaccines offered Nov. 15
A free kidney screening and flu vaccines will be offered at a health fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, at the 8th Street YMCA, 900 N. 8th St., Kansas City, Kan. The National Kidney Foundation is sponsoring this screening for those who may be at risk for kidney disease. This includes those who have diabetes, high blood pressure, a family history of kidney failure or over the age of 60. There also will be flu shots, weight and body mass index readings. The flu shots will be through Walgreens. The Y will have 50 flu shot vouchers available for those who qualify. Those who do not have insurance will not qualify for a free vaccination; flu shots will be available at the event using their insurance card. Lapel pin collection to be part of presentation Nov. 15

Clinton Wynn is scheduled to make a presentation on life and his pin collection at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, at the South Branch Library, 3104 Strong Ave., Kansas City, Kan. Wynn has more than 6,000 lapel pins, one of the largest collections in the Midwest. Some of the pins will be on display at the library. Mobile food pantry scheduled to be at 65th and State today
A mobile food pantry from Harvesters is scheduled to be at the Kansas City Kansas Community College Technical Education Center, 6565 State Ave. The food truck is scheduled to be at the parking lot of the former Walmart store at 1 p.m. Nov. 15. Food will be given away on a first-come, first-served basis. The food items include fresh fruit and vegetables. There are no income restrictions; the food will be given away as supplies last. Quantities will vary according to the number of people in the family. Those receiving the food may line up in the KCKCC-TEC parking lot prior to the distribution. Future food distributions will be at 1 p.m. Dec. 13 and Dec. 20 at KCKCC-TEC. Sponsors are Harvesters and Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas, and KCKCC is a partner in this effort. Democrats to meet Saturday
The Wyandotte County Third Saturday Democratic Breakfast is scheduled to be Saturday, Nov. 15, in the Eisenhower Room at the Hilton Garden Inn, 520 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kan. The speaker will be former state Rep. Bill Reardon. He was a member of the Kansas House of Representatives for 30 years. The breakfast buffet is available at 8:15 a.m. and the forum begins at 9:15. The cost for the breakfast buffet, which includes tax, service and tip, is $10; or $7 for students and those on limited income. All Democrats are invited to attend.
