Applications sought for 2021 BPU employee charity golf tournament beneficiary

The Board of Public Utilities Employees Charity Golf Corp. has opened applications for consideration as a beneficiary to receive proceeds from this year’s annual tournament.

The application process is now open and will close on Monday, May 17, a BPU spokesman said.

The tournament committee is looking for applications from nonprofit organizations that benefit children and youth within Kansas City, Kansas, and Wyandotte County.

The purpose of this annual charity event is to benefit the youth of the community served by BPU, the spokesman said.

Organizations wanting to obtain an application form to apply for proceeds can email CharityGolf.Corp@bpu.com to receive their application.

As part of its ongoing commitment to the community, the BPU Employees Charity Golf Corp., a Kansas 501c3 not-for-profit organization, sponsors and holds an annual golf tournament. Since 1992, the annual event has raised over $639,000 combined for area children’s charities.

This year’s tournament is slated for Saturday, Sept. 11, at Dub’s Dread.

Free haircuts offered for kids April 25

The Jegna Klub will offer free haircuts, with hot food, food boxes, gently used shoes, clothes and giveaways from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday, April 25, at 221 N. 18th St., Kansas City, Kansas.

The event is for up to 150 kindergarten through 12th grade students, according to Moses Wyatt Jr., founder of the Jegna Klub. There will be social distancing and masks required at the event.

The One Touch Maintenance Office at 221 N. 18th St., will be the host of the event. Licensed barbers will give the haircuts.

“We want to be the change we wish to see in our community,” Wyatt said.

Time spent building g positive relationships will youth will show them that people understand, care and are here for them, according to Wyatt. It will help motivate them to achieve. When a child feels good about his or her appearance and grooming, it boosts their self-esteem, which in turn has a uniquely positive effect on the development and educational success of a child, according to Wyatt.

Participating barbershops include Tino’s Chop Shop, Purple Label, the Crown Suite and Unlimited Trends.

Community partners in the event include One Touch Building Maintenance, Dotte Mobile Grocer, WAW Trucking Solutions, Open Arms, Newt’s Unique Kitchen, R&R Paseo Grill, Premium Waters, P.R.I.D.E., BPOA, Taste of Flavor, Helping Hands and Bridge of Hope.

The previous two Jegna Klub haircutting events provided 175 haircuts, 250 hot meals, 175 sandwiches and chips, 238 pairs of shoes, 147 pairs of socks, 459 articles of clothing, 45 food boxes and 172 food baskets, according to Wyatt.

BPU schedules charity golf tournament Sept. 11

The BPU Employees Charity Golf Corp. will hold its annual charity golf tournament on Saturday, Sept. 11, at Dub’s Dread Golf Course, Kansas City, Kansas.

BPU employees hold the annual golf event, which so far has raised more than $639,000 for children’s charities in Kansas City, Kansas, and Wyandotte County.

The 2021 tournament kicks off with registration and a continental breakfast at 7 a.m., followed by a shotgun start at 8 a.m.

The team entry fee is $500, which includes greens fees, cart, a continental breakfast, refreshments on the course and an awards dinner with prizes after ther tournament.

There are opportunities for individuals and companies to contribute or donate to the charity event, including corporate sponsorships at various levels, in-kind donations of gift certificates, golf balls, tees and other items for use in player goodie bags. The 2020 tournament was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2019 tournament was able to raise more than $57,000 for the KC Blind All Stars, Giving the Basics and Young Women on the Move.
