The Turner Black and Gold Girls Soccer Invitational tournament wrapped up Wednesday evening at the new Turner District Activity Center.

Piper defeated Bonner Springs in the consolation match 10-3. Piper had seven different players score in the match, led by Ryann Clark, Ella Buff, and Sierra Montez with two goals each. Kyndell Letcher, Emma Hawley, Samantha Trumbo, and Mackenzie Jones each scored one.

In the tournament’s championship game, Shawnee Mission Northwest defeated Shawnee Mission North 7-0 to claim the title.

In the evening’s earlier contests, Raytown defeated tournament host Turner 4-1, and Sumner Academy defeated Bishop Ward 9-1.

Local government offices closed on Friday

Unified Government offices will be closed on Friday, April 2, for the spring holiday, according to the UG’s website.

Also closed on Friday, April 2, will be the Board of Public Utilities offices, according to a news release. The BPU’s emergency water and light phone numbers will be working.

Good Friday, April 2, is not an official state holiday, according to state calendar information. It also is not an official federal holiday.

Funeral services for Alvin Sykes to be livestreamed on Thursday

Funeral services will be livestreamed on Thursday, April 1, for Alvin Sykes.

Sykes, 64, a human rights activist, died on Friday, March 19. He pursued social justice issues and was instrumental in the passage of the federal Emmett Till Unsolved Civil Rights Crime Act, as well as several Kansas laws dealing with social justice.

The services are open to friends and family, with face masks required.

Visitation is 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursday, April 1, followed by services at 11 a.m. April 1 at the Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church, 2310 E. Linwood Blvd., Kansas City, Missouri.
