Halloween Trunk or Treat to be Saturday
A Halloween Trunk or Treat event will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at the Wyandotte County Fairgrounds, 13700 Polfer Road, Kansas City, Kan. The event, sponsored by the Wyandotte County Fair Board, is a benefit for the Wyandotte County Fair Foundation 4-H Scholarships. The admission charge of $5 per child ages 2 and up will include hayride, trunk or treating, haunted petting zoo, games and a hot dog around the fire pits. The public is invited to the event. Family activities are geared to ages 3 to 15, and parents or adults should accompany the children. Volunteers including 4-H members and adults will be working at the trunk or treat. The fairgrounds location is east of K-7 on Polfer Road in northwest Wyandotte County.

Several local authors to appear at library event Oct. 25
Kansas City, Kan., Public Library will hold a Homegrown Reads local author fair on Oct. 25. This event, focusing on Kansas City area writers, will highlight both burgeoning, new talent and popular, established authors. Fans will be able to meet and talk with authors, listen to live readings, and purchase copies of books to have signed. Homegrown Reads feature dozens of local authors, including Fanny Alaadeen, Ruth Saucedo Campos, Angela Cervantes, Lisa Cindrich, Jay Sparks, Sarah Elizabeth, Terry W. Drake, Pete Dulin, Helen Walsh Folsom, James Heiman, Evelyn Hill, Ann Ingalls, Von Kopfman, Debra McArthur, Kira McConico, Jan Menn, Steve Penn, Anola Pickett, Linda Rodriguez, Thomas Shawver, Regina Sirois, Barbara Stuber, Joe Vaughan, and Berneice Williams. Trick-or-treat at the library
Children may trick-or-treat from 2 to 4 p.m. Oct. 25 at the West Wyandotte Library, 1737 N. 82nd, Kansas City, Kan. Children may wear costumes and may stay at the event to do a couple of Halloween crafts. Those under 9 must be accompanied by an adult. Groups of six or more must call ahead.

Rosedale Development Association plans Healthy Halloween event
The Rosedale Development Association plans its fifth annual Healthy Halloween event from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at Whitmore Park, 1412 Southwest Blvd., Kansas City, Kan. Spooktacular, sponsored by the Turner Recreation Commission, will be held at 6 p.m. Oct. 25 at the Turner Community Library, 831 S. 55th, Kansas City, Kan. Big Pumpkin Run 5k and Scarecrow Scamper scheduled Oct. 25
The Big Pumpkin Run 5k and Scarecrow Scamper are scheduled at 5 p.m. Oct. 25 by the Bonner Springs YMCA. The starting line is north of the intersection of West Kump Avenue and South Bluegrass Drive in Bonner Springs. Besides the race, there will be a party, costumes and family fun. A family festival will follow an awards ceremony. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Bonner Springs Family YMCA campaign. Entry fee is $20 for the 5k, and $2 for children to attend the child watch party.

KCK NAACP to hold Freedom Fund Banquet
The 71st annual Kansas City, Kan., NAACP Freedom Fund Banquet will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at the Reardon Center, 520 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kan. The banquet theme is “All in for Justice and Equality.” The speaker will be Bishop Ervin Sims Jr. of Mount Carmel Church of God in Christ, and president of the Mount Carmel Redevelopment Corp. Job fair planned Oct. 28 at KCKCC
The Center for Workforce Development and Entrepreneurship at Kansas City Kansas Community College is sponsoring a Mini Job Fair next week in conjunction with the college’s Work Readiness Week. The Mini Job Fair is from 1 to 4 p.m. Oct. 28 in Upper Jewell on the main KCKCC campus, 7250 State Ave. Approximately 30 companies will be in attendance, and all have current job openings. The job fair is open to those on the KCKCC campus as well as community members.

‘My Shelf to Yours Book Sale’ to be Oct. 28-30
The “My Shelf to Yours Book Sale” is returning to Kansas City Kansas Community College next week, raising funds for students on campus. The sale is from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 28 and 30 and 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29, in Room 2325 on the lower level of the Jewell Building on the KCKCC campus, 7250 State Ave. The sale is open to the public as well as students, staff and faculty. All books will be $1 or seven books for $5. All proceeds will be placed into a student scholarship fund for textbooks and tuition for those in financial need. In addition, there will also be beverages and snacks for sale as well as fashion jewelry and other local vendors.

Blood drive scheduled

Friends of Yates to hold annual Faith Luncheon and Awards Ceremony Oct. 31
On Friday, Oct. 31, Friends of Yates, Inc. will hold its 14th Annual Faith Luncheon and Awards Ceremony in observance of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. This event will be held at the Friends of Yates Center located at 1418 Garfield Ave, Kansas City, Kan., from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Special guests will include representatives from the office of the U.S. attorney, district of Kansas, the Kansas City, Kan., Police Department, the Kansas Coalition Against Sexual and Domestic Violence, the Kansas Governor’s Grants Program along with many other notable officials and advocates who work daily to eradicate domestic violence. Alcott Center plans Halloween event
The Alcott Arts Center will hold a “Super Heroes and Villains” theme safe Halloween event for children from 5 to 8 p.m. Oct. 31 at the center, 180 S. 18th, Kansas City, Kan. Children may dress up in Halloween costumes, meet super heroes and villains characters on the decorated south lawn of the center, where they can trick-or-treat. Parents may bring a camera to take a picture of the child with the superheroes. There also will be children’s face painting by Sheryl Nance Durst, and posters by artist Darryl Woods will be drawn. There is no charge for the event. Donations of candy and items to give away are being accepted for this event. There are often 400 to 600 children attending this event, according to organizers. Grinter Place State Historic Site, the oldest home in Wyandotte County, will hold a chili supper and silent auction from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1. Free kidney screening offered Nov. 15
A free kidney screening will be offered from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 15, at the 8th Street YMCA, 900 N. 8th St., Kansas City, Kan. The National Kidney Foundation is sponsoring this screening for those who may be at risk for kidney disease. This includes those who have diabetes, high blood pressure, a family history of kidney failure or over the age of 60.

ServSafe Course to be Nov. 18
A Food Handlers ServSafe Course will be held from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, at the K-State Research and Extension Office, 1216 N. 79th St., Kansas City, Kan. The class is for anyone who works in food service or is interested in food service employment. Program offered to make Day of the Dead Sugar Skulls
Children and adults may decorate their own sugar skulls for Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) during a program from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 18, at the Main Kansas City, Kan., Public Library, youth story time – craft room, 625 Minnesota Ave.

Design a Halloween candy jar
Adults and teens may design a Halloween candy jar during a program from 11 a.m. to noon Oct. 18 at the Turner Community Library, 831 S. 55th, Kansas City, Kan. The program is for ages 15 and up and is geared to adults. Hot glue is used in creating the candy jar using materials such as duct tape, ribbons, glass bowls and candle holders.

Museum plans Halloween History Howl on Saturday

The Wyandotte County Museum, 126th and State Avenue, Bonner Springs, is planning a Halloween History Howl from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18. The event is a family fall festival geared to children, said Jennifer Laughlin, museum curator. It will include pumpkin painting, a magic show, fire trucks and police cars, sheriff’s station children’s identification cards, Schlagle Library display, face painting and a balloon artist. Refreshments of cider and popcorn are included with the admission price of $5 for children ages 2-15. Adults are admitted free with their children. Also at the Wyandotte County Museum, the exhibit, “Bittersweet Harvest: The Bracero Project,” will continue through Nov. 15. A Smithsonian traveling exhibit, it is the history of migrant workers.

KCKPS Marching Band Festival planned Oct. 18
Students are tuning up their instruments for a day of competition and fun. The Kansas City, Kan., Public Schools will hold its annual Marching Band Festival at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, at the Washington High School stadium. The annual festival features bands from the district’s high schools, including Washington, Wyandotte, Sumner Academy, Harmon, and Schlagle. Traditionally students and instructors focus their best performance energies on this festival, and the result is an afternoon of pageantry and sound. Tickets are $5 in advance (and may be purchased from any high school band director) or $7 at the gate.

Beer Fest at the Ballpark planned Oct. 18

Beer Fest at the Ballpark is planned from 1:30 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, at the CommunityAmerica Ballpark, 1800 Village West Parkway, Kansas City, Kan. Those attending may sample beers from 200 domestic, micro-brewed and international craft beers inside the concourse at CommunityAmerica Ballpark. There will be a disc jockey at the event. ‘Babes in Arms’ to be presented Oct. 18-19
“Babes in Arms,” a musical by Rodgers and Hart, will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 18 at the Kansas City Kansas Community College Performing Arts Center, 7250 State Ave., Kansas City, Kan. There is also a matinee performance at 2:30 p.m. Oct. 19. Students in the KCKCC Theatre Department will present the play. Reception planned for Romanian artist Oct. 21
A reception is planned for Romanian artist Larisa David on Oct. 21 at the Epic Arts, 611 N. 6th St., on Strawberry Hill in Kansas City, Kan. The reception will be from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The artist will be in the area producing new work and doing research from Oct. 9 to Nov. 12. She is sponsored through CEC ArtsLink in partnership with Charlotte Street Foundation.

Workshop to discuss skills for job readiness
“Etiquette and Life Skills for Job Readiness and Success” is a workshop recommended for women seeking entry-level positions or women who have had a hard time keeping a job. Sponsors of the workshop said participants will leave better prepared for work and feeling much more confident in their ability to find and keep a job that matches their interest and skills. The workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22 at Keeler Women’s Center, a ministry of the Benedictine Sisters of Mount St. Scholastica, 2220 Central Ave., Kansas City, Kan. Trunk and treat event offered
The Eighth Street YMCA plans a Trunk and Treat event from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24, at 900 N. 8th St., Kansas City, Kan. Activities will include a carnival, games, costume parade and a trunk and treat. It is free and open to the public.

State NAACP convention to be Oct. 24-25

Halloween Trunk or Treat to be Saturday
A Halloween Trunk or Treat event will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at the Wyandotte County Fairgrounds, 13700 Polfer Road, Kansas City, Kan. The event, sponsored by the Wyandotte County Fair Board, is a benefit for the Wyandotte County Fair Foundation 4-H Scholarships. The admission charge of $5 per child ages 2 and up will include hayride, trunk or treating, haunted petting zoo, games and a hot dog around the fire pits. The public is invited to the event. Family activities are geared to ages 3 to 15, and parents or adults should accompany the children. Volunteers including 4-H members and adults will be working at the trunk or treat. The fairgrounds location is east of K-7 on Polfer Road in northwest Wyandotte County.

Several local authors to appear at library event Oct. 25
Kansas City, Kan., Public Library will hold a Homegrown Reads local author fair on Oct. 25. This event, focusing on Kansas City area writers, will highlight both burgeoning, new talent and popular, established authors. Fans will be able to meet and talk with authors, listen to live readings, and purchase copies of books to have signed. Homegrown Reads feature dozens of local authors, including Fanny Alaadeen, Ruth Saucedo Campos, Angela Cervantes, Lisa Cindrich, Jay Sparks, Sarah Elizabeth, Terry W. Drake, Pete Dulin, Helen Walsh Folsom, James Heiman, Evelyn Hill, Ann Ingalls, Von Kopfman, Debra McArthur, Kira McConico, Jan Menn, Steve Penn, Anola Pickett, Linda Rodriguez, Thomas Shawver, Regina Sirois, Barbara Stuber, Joe Vaughan, and Berneice Williams. Trick-or-treat at the library
Children may trick-or-treat from 2 to 4 p.m. Oct. 25 at the West Wyandotte Library, 1737 N. 82nd, Kansas City, Kan. Children may wear costumes and may stay at the event to do a couple of Halloween crafts. Those under 9 must be accompanied by an adult. Groups of six or more must call ahead.

Young Women on the Move is planning its annual garage and bake sale Nov. 6-8 at Bethel Presbyterian Church, 2907 N. 81st St., Kansas City, Kan. Funds raised will help to support program expenses such as transportation, Saturday workshops, the new peer health mentorship program and expansion of after-school programs into eight middle schools.
