Strawberry Hill Museum open for holidays
The Strawberry Hill Museum, 720 N. 4th St., Kansas City, Kan., has opened for the holidays and will remain open on weekends through Sunday, Jan. 26. The museum, decorated in Victorian style, is open from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, with special tours available by appointment. The cost of a tour is $7 for adults and $3 for children 6-12. Nighttime tours will be available at 6 p.m. Fridays, Dec. 5 and Dec. 19, and reservations are required. Grinter Place plans holiday with the arts Dec. 6
An evening of visiting with local artists, viewing their works, visiting with and listening to local authors, plus live music played by local musicians, is planned from 4 to 7 p.m. Dec. 6 at Grinter Place, 1420 S. 78th. There also will be a “wine tasting” by the Wine Barn. Admission for the Dec. 6 event is $6 per person or two for $10. Nativity Display to be Saturday and Sunday
The Cathedral of St. Peter, 409 N. 15th St., Kansas City, Kan. is sponsoring the fourth annual Nativity Display from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7. More than 100 unique nativities will be on display. Come and enjoy a magical experience that reflects the true meaning of Christmas. Admission is free. KCKCC Community Choir winter choral concert to be Dec. 7
The Kansas City Kansas Community College Community Choir will hold its annual Winter Choral Concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, at the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 2203 Parallel Parkway in Kansas City, Kan. Admission is free, however donations will be accepted for vocal music student travel opportunities to St. Louis, Mo., Chicago, Ill. and Denver, Colo. in the spring. The concert is open to the public. The choir will perform selections from Handel’s Messiah with a professional string quartet. In addition, the KCKCC Chamber Choir will perform a cappella selections ranging from Early American Hymns, Baroque Church music, Russian Church music and African-American Spirituals.

Historic Westheight Holiday Homes Tour to be Dec. 7
The Historic Westheight Manor Holiday Homes Tour will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, in the Westheight neighborhood of Kansas City, Kan. Six historic homes will be on the one-day tour in the area located from North 18th Street to North 25th Street, State Avenue to Wood Avenue. Historic Westheight Manor has one of the richest architectural histories in all of Kansas City, according to one of the organizers of the event. Notable architects such as Louis S. Curtiss, Victor J.Defoe (who began his career with J.C. Nichols), Edward Buehler Delk (who also helped build the County Club Plaza), J.G. Braecklein and W.W. Rose all contributed to this unique community. Tickets are $10 and may be purchased on the day of the tour at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 1300 N. 18th St., Kansas City, Kan. Support group to meet Dec. 8

Burnout workshop planned Dec. 9
A free workshop on “Burnout, Adrenal Fatigue and Stress Syndrome” will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9, at the West Wyandotte Library, 1737 N. 82nd St., Kansas City, Kan. The workshop is sponsored by Mental Health America of the Heartland. Heather Clark, who holds a doctorate in pharmacy, will speak. She will talk about her “Burnout Cure” program. The program may benefit persons who suffer from fatigue, trauma and depression. Community, health care workers and mental health professional may attend. Christmas social event planned Dec. 9

‘Business Basics 4 Boomers’ program offered Dec. 12 on starting a business
The Workforce Development Department at Kansas City Kansas Community College, AARP in Kansas City, and Next Chapter Kansas City, a program of Shepherd’s Center of Kansas City, Kan., have joined together to offer “Business Basics 4 Boomers” from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 12, at the Dr. Thomas R. Burke KCKCC Technical Education Center, 6565 State Ave, Kansas City, Kan. People at all stages of starting a business and those who are just considering the idea can attend. Also, while the event targets the Baby Boomer generation, younger people also can participate. The half-day conference will consist of a panel of successful business owners and a panel of representatives of business resource organizations, who will share experience, information, and advice for the “encore entrepreneur.” Encore entrepreneurs are the growing number of persons who are seeking to launch income-generating ventures that make a positive difference in their communities after leaving their primary career or in anticipation of doing so. The business owners’ panel will be moderated by Charley Vogt, senior vice president of business-economic development with Country Club Bank. Panel members will include Joyce Moore, owner of Goin Postal, Tim Ney, owner-operator of drivekansas, and Doug Danforth, founder and CEO of Links-It. The panel of business resource organizations will be moderated by Patricia Brown-Dixson, Region 7 Administrator for the US Small Business Administration. Panelists will include Elisa Waldman with the JCCC Small Business Development Center, Kate Hodel with KC Source Link, and a representative from the SCORE Association. Conference attendees will also have the opportunity to visit booths of business resource organizations. KCKCC candlelighting ceremony to be Dec. 3
Kansas City Kansas Community College’s oldest tradition is returning Dec. 3, honoring the holiday season while raising funds for scholarships at the same time. The 92nd annual Candlelighting Ceremony is at 9 and 11 a.m. Dec. 3 in the KCKCC Performing Arts Center on the main campus, 7250 State Ave. Classes will not be held during the 11 a.m. lighting, so that all personnel and students, who wish to, can participate in the program. However, the Jewell Center, KCKCC Library and all offices will be open during those hours to serve individuals who choose not to participate in the ceremony.

BPU to meet Dec. 3
The Kansas City, Kan., Board of Public Utilities will meet at 6 p.m. Dec. 3 at the board offices, 540 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kan. There will be only one BPU meeting on Dec. 3. Mayor Mark Holland’s Downtown Kansas City, Kan., Holiday Lighting Ceremony will be held from 4 to 7:30 p.m. just outside City Hall, 701 N. 7th St., KCK. The lighting will be at 7:15 p.m. Events include the tree lighting, holiday movies, crafts for children, and performances by choirs, bands and dance groups. Holiday craft show planned Nov. 22
The annual Holiday Craft Show will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, at Eisenhower Community Center, 2901 N. 72nd, Kansas City, Kan. There is no admission charge. For more information, call 913-573-8358.

Free health fair and Thanksgiving outreach Saturday
New Bethel Church, 745 Walker Ave., Kansas City, Kan., will hold a free health fair and Thanksgiving outreach from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22. Because unhealthy lifestyle choices can cause health conditions, Pastor A. Glenn Brady decided to initiate the free health fair. Its goal is to encourage good health, and provide individuals with a wholesome meal and food for their family. The theme of the event is “Celebrating Life and Good Health.” The health fair also will include one-to-one assistance to sign up for the Affordable Health Care Act with onsite enrollment specialists from the McDaniel Hazely Group. It also includes health screenings with licensed medical personnel, health presentations, youth activities, a hearty Thanksgiving dinner and groceries for the family. The New Bethel Transportation Ministry will provide pickup and drop-off services throughout the Kansas City metro area upon request. Friends of Library book sale to be Saturday
The Friends of the Bonner Library quarterly book sale will continue Nov. 22. On Saturday the sale will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The sale is held in the storm shelter area on the bottom level of the library and can be accessed from the parking lot at the rear of the building. The library is located at 201 N. Nettleton, Bonner Springs.

Talking turkey and Thanksgiving crafts on Saturday
A program from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, at the Schlagle Library at Wyandotte County Lake Park, 91st and Leavenworth Road, will discuss the kind of turkey that makes its home at Wyandotte County Lake, and will include turkey calling and Thanksgiving crafts. All ages may attend. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Make a Thanksgiving napkin ring
A craft program for children and tweens, making Thanksgiving turkey napkin rings, will be held from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Nov. 22 at the Main Kansas City, Kan., Public Library, youth services storytime – craft room, 625 Minnesota Ave. All materials are provided. The program is for ages 5 to 12. Registration is required to 913-279-2216. There is a limit of 20 persons.

Children’s turkey craft program to be Saturday
Children may build their own paper turkeys at a craft program from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, at the West Wyandotte Library, 1737 N. 82nd, Kansas City, Kan. Children under 9 must be accompanied by an adult. Groups of six or more must call ahead at 913-596-5800, Ext. 1016.

Bike Club open house planned
The Bike Club open house will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Nov. 22 at 1401 Southwest Blvd., Kansas City, Kan. Those who attend will hear about a bike lane project on 10th Street.

Fraud Awareness Week includes shredding event

Legends tree lighting ceremony to be Nov. 22

Thanksgiving Breakfast Dance scheduled
The historical Thanksgiving Breakfast Dance will be held at 10 a.m. Nov. 27 at the Kansas National Guard Armory, 18th and Ridge, Kansas City, Kan. KCKCC candlelighting ceremony to be Dec. 3
Kansas City Kansas Community College’s oldest tradition is returning Dec. 3, honoring the holiday season while raising funds for scholarships at the same time. The 92nd annual Candlelighting Ceremony is at 9 and 11 a.m. Dec. 3 in the KCKCC Performing Arts Center on the main campus, 7250 State Ave. Classes will not be held during the 11 a.m. lighting, so that all personnel and students, who wish to, can participate in the program. However, the Jewell Center, KCKCC Library and all offices will be open during those hours to serve individuals who choose not to participate in the ceremony.

UG Commission to meet Dec. 4

Downtown KCK holiday lighting ceremony to be Dec. 5
Mayor Mark Holland’s Downtown Kansas City, Kan., Holiday Lighting Ceremony will be held from 4 to 7:30 p.m. just outside City Hall, 701 N. 7th St., KCK. The lighting will be at 7:15 p.m. Events include the tree lighting, holiday movies, crafts for children, and performances by choirs, bands and dance groups. Santa and Mrs. Claus will meet with children. Food vendors will be selling food and refreshments. Admission is free; concessions are available for purchase.

Christmas social event planned Dec. 9
The Leavenworth Road Association will hold a Christmas Social from 6 to 8 p.m. Dec. 9 at Eisenhower Recreation Center, 2901 N. 72nd, Kansas City, Kan. Those attending should bring a snack to share with the group. They also should bring a new unwrapped toy or game to be donated to the Community Policing Christmas Adoption Project.
