Exhibit on Prohibition to visit Wyandotte County Museum
“Spirited: Prohibition in America,” a National Endowment for the Humanities traveling exhibition, will visit the Wyandotte County Museum from April 6 to May 25. The exhibit covers the history of Prohibition, which started in 1919 and continued 13 years. The museum is at 631 N. 126th St., Bonner Springs. Hours of the exhibit are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday. The exhibit is free to the public. Strawberry Hill Museum open on weekends
The Strawberry Hill Museum, 720 N. 4th St., Kansas City, Kan., is open on the weekends. The museum is open from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. The admission charge is $7 for adults, $3 for children 6 to 12, and free for children under 6. Special tours are available during the week for groups of 20 or more by calling 913-721-0081. Cinco de Mayo parade and festival canceled May 9
A Cinco de Mayo parade and festival planned at 11 a.m. May 9 in downtown Kansas City, Kan., has been canceled because of the predicted rain in the forecast Saturday. The festival was supposed to run until 11 p.m. May 9, but now the event will be rescheduled, perhaps in June, according to event organizers.

Wyandotte Art Association celebrates with art exhibit at Alcott Saturday; musical concert also planned Saturday
The Wyandotte Art Association will celebrate its 50th anniversary on Saturday, May 9, with an art exhibit at the Alcott Arts Center, 180 S. 18th St., Kansas City, Kan. The building is not yet handicapped-accessible. Ten local artists from the Wyandotte Art Association will be on hand with their artwork, said Chris Green, executive director of the Alcott Center. This free art exhibit will start at 6:30 p.m. Saturday. It is open to the public. There will be a silent auction in conjunction with this event, with all proceeds going to Alcott Center. There will be some refreshments at the event. The same evening, a music fundraiser will be taking place starting at 7:30 p.m. at the theater at the Alcott Center, she said. Gary Barber, soloist, and Debbie Goddard, accompanist, will present “An Evening of Songs,” Green said. They will perform selections in Italian, German, from Broadway and 1930s pop. Admission to the musical concert in the theater will be $10 per person. All of the money raised will be donated to the Alcott, Green said. UG to have special meeting Monday
A strategic planning session is on the schedule for Monday afternoon for the Unified Government Commission. A special session of the Unified Government Commission has been called for 2 p.m. Monday, May 11, in the fifth floor conference room, Suite 515, of City Hall, 701 N. 7th St., Kansas City, Kan.

KCK Women’s Chamber to meet May 13
The Kansas City, Kan., Women’s Chamber of Commerce will meet at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 13, at the West Wyandotte Branch Library, 1737 N. 82nd St., Kansas City, Kan. Networking will begin at 11:30 a.m., with a lunch and program planned from noon to 1 p.m. The cost of lunch will be $20 for members and $25 for nonmembers. Rachel Merlo of Google will speak about Google Fiber and the Start-Up Village in the Kansas City area. Insurance commissioner to be guest speaker at Fairfax meeting May 14
Kansas Insurance Commissioner Ken Selzer is expected to be the guest speaker at 11:15 a.m. Thursday, May 14, at the Fairfax Industrial Association meeting. The meeting will be at the UAW Local 31 hall, 500 Kindleberger Road, Kansas City, Kan. Those who want to attend are asked to make reservations by 5 p.m. May 12 to [email protected]. The cost of the luncheon is $15 for members and $20 for nonmembers.

Bike rodeo returns May 16
The Kiwanis West Bike Rodeo returns to the Schlitterbahn parking lot Saturday, May 16. The ninth annual event will be held from 9 a.m. to noon May 16 at the Schlitterbahn waterpark, 9400 State Ave. Tips on cycling safety, free bike safety helmets, T-shirts and a look at Schlitterbahn attractions will be the highlights of the day.

Rosedale Retro Run canceled, rescheduled
The Rosedale Retro Run, a 5k-fun run, has been canceled Saturday, May 9. It is being rescheduled for May 30. There also will be a community trail work day and a mountain bike jam. There will be a finish line party at Fisher Park. Race registration will be $20 per person in advance and $25 on the day of the race. Kids may participate for free. A Classic Car Cruise is planned from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, May 30, at 500 Kindleberger Road, Kansas City, Kan. The event will be sponsored by the UAW Local 31.

DAR chapter Medal of Honor Remembrance Service rescheduled
The Wyandot Daughters of the American Revolution Chapter’s Medal of Honor Remembrance Service originally planned at 10 a.m. June 13 at the Highland Park Cemetery, 4101 State Ave., will be rescheduled in September, according to an announcement. Three Civil War Medal of Honor recipients will be honored.

Grinter Place to hold quilt show April 24-26
Grinter Place State Historic Site will hold its 39th annual quilt show Friday – Sunday, April 24 – 26. Friday and Saturday hours are 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.; Sunday hours are noon – 4 p.m. Local quilts will be on display. Quilting materials and craft items will be available for purchase. Visitors can see and make a donation for a chance on this year’s opportunity quilt, hand-quilted by the Grinter Place Quilters. At 1 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Patti Winkler will present “Quilts in the Classroom: How Quilts Tie into History.” Admission to the quilt show is free. Special memorial service and candlelighting for homicide victims to be April 27
The 16th annual Memorial Service and Candlelighting for Crime Victims’ Rights Week will be held on Monday, April 27. The event will bring the Wyandotte County community, families of fallen victims and community officials together to remember those who have lost their lives to homicide in 2014, a spokesman said. The event is free and open to the public, a spokesman said. The Crime Awareness Coordinating Effort (C.A.C.E.), a program service of Friends of Yates Inc., and co-sponsored by the Wyandotte County District Attorney’s Victim Services Unit, will sponsor the event, which will be held at the Forest Grove Baptist Church, 1417 N. 9th St., Kansas City, Kan. The Rev. Desmond Lamb is pastor of the church. The event begins with a light dinner from 5 to 6 p.m., followed by the program from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
Town Hall meeting planned for 8th District on April 29
An 8th District Town Hall meeting is planned from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 29, at the Eisenhower Community Center, 2901 N. 72nd St., Kansas City, Kan. The meeting will be held by UG Commissioner Jane Philbrook, 8th District. Residents may learn about developments in the 8th District and talk about their ideas and concerns.
DAR to meet May 2
The Wyandot Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, will meet at 10 a.m. May 2 at the Lone Star Steakhouse, 1501 Village West Parkway, Kansas City, Kan. The guest speaker will be Elizabeth Kelloff and one other member of the Capt. Jesse Leavenworth DAR. The meeting topic will be the enactment of an 1850 interview with Caty Sage. Caty was kidnapped from her family in Elk Creek, Va., at 5 years old and grew up to become a Wyandot Indian queen. After 62 years she found a bloodline brother at the Wyandot Reservation, (then) Leavenworth County, Kan., according to the book, “The Legend of Caty Sage” by Ellie Kirby.

The Greater Kansas City Two Cylinder Club plans a Tractor Cruise to benefit the Ag Hall, Bonner Springs. Sunflower State regatta planned May 2
The Sunflower State regatta, a rowing contest between the University of Kansas women and Kansas State University women, will be held May 2 at Wyandotte County Lake, 91st and Leavenworth Road, Kansas City, Kan.

Bike tour planned

Workshop to be offered May 8
A workshop, “How the Stigma of Mental Illness in the African-American Community Impacts Treatment,” will be presented from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Friday, May 8, at the Faith Deliverance Family Worship Center, 3043 State Ave., Kansas City, Kan. The parade floats will line up at 4th and Minnesota Avenue. The parade route is along Minnesota Avenue from 4th to 18th Street. Judges will be at the Bonito Michoacan Restaurant at 14th and Minnesota. Floats must be entered in advance of the parade.
