Third Saturday Democratic Breakfast planned Aug. 15
The Wyandotte County Third Saturday Democratic Breakfast will meet this Saturday, Aug. 15, at Las Islas Marias, 7516 State Ave. Kansas Democratic Party Chairman Larry Meeker will be the speaker. The breakfast buffet will be available at 8:15 a.m. and the program will begin at 9:15. The cost for the breakfast is $10, or $7 for students and those on limited incomes. All Democrats are invited to attend. Reservations are requested by Friday, Aug. 14. Reservations help plan for attendance, but are not necessary to attend. Shakespeare comedy and art planned this weekend at Alcott Arts Center
Shakespeare with a humorous twist will be featured this weekend at the Alcott Arts Center, 180 S. 18th St., Kansas City, Kan. The Lord Mayor’s Company will perform some silly scenes from Shakespeare at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, at Alcott, according to Chris Green, Alcott executive director. It is a benefit for Alcott Arts Center. Theater-goers may view the art exhibit at the Alcott Arts Center before the performance, and the gallery will open at 6:30 p.m. The free art exhibit is by Legion Fetters, a 14-year-old student at Sumner Academy.

Sporting KC to play Vancouver today in KCK
Sporting Kansas City hosts first place Vancouver Whitecaps FC at Sporting Park on Saturday. The match, presented by Mark One, kicks off at 8 p.m. and will be broadcast on KMCI-TV’s 38 the Spot with coverage beginning at 7:30 p.m. A limited number of tickets may still be available and can be purchased at Ticketmaster.com or the Sporting Park box offices on Saturday. Sporting KC and Vancouver are both coming off midweek matches highlighted by Sporting KC advancing to the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Final with a 3-1 victory over Real Salt Lake. Vancouver earned a 2-2 draw against the Montreal Impact at Stade Saputo in the first leg of the Amway Canadian Championship Final.

Church carnival planned Saturday
A carnival will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, on the Our Lady and St. Rose church grounds, 8th and Quindaro Boulevard. Games and food will be included. A banquet and program will include dinner at 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, at the Hilton Garden Inn, 5th and Minnesota Avenue. Robinson Entertainment will be featured.

Sacred music concert planned Saturday
A sacred music concert is planned at 6:15 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 1086 N. 94th St., Kansas City, Kan. Cindy Bounds will play a concert of sacred music from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. at the church.

Church festival planned Saturday
St. John the Baptist Festival is planned at 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, at St. John’s Catholic Club, 708 N. 4th St., in Kansas City, Kan. The event will start after the 4 p.m. Mass on Saturday at St. John’s Church. The festival will feature ethnic food including sarma, games, children’s activities, and a dance starting at 9 p.m. on the Strawberry Hill Museum grounds.

Household hazardous waste collection days for Wyandotte County residents will be Aug. 15, Sept. 19 and Oct. 17 at 2443 S. 88th St., Kansas City, Kan. The hours are 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. those Saturdays. The site is at South 88th Street from K-32 or east of I-435 using Woodend exit near the Kaw River. Items should be labeled or identified. Items that are accepted include tires (a limit of 10 tires, with rims removed), motor oil, batteries, antifreeze, degreasers, paints, varnishes, solvents, lawn and garden insecticides and pesticides, and household cleaning products.

Piper school district to hold budget hearing Aug. 10
The Piper Public Schools has scheduled a budget hearing at the Board of Education meeting Aug. 10. The budget hearing will be at 6:15 p.m. at the district office, 3130 N. 122nd St., Kansas City, Kan. The regular meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. The 2015-2016 Piper School District budget will have no mill levy increase.

KCK school board to meet Aug. 11
The Kansas City, Kan., Public Schools Board of Education is scheduled to meet at 5 p.m. Aug. 11 at the Central Office, 2010 N. 59th St., Kansas City, Kan. The meeting will include a budget hearing at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 11. An agenda should be posted on the district’s website, www.kckps.org, before the meeting.

BPU August meeting date changed to Aug. 12
The August date for the Board of Public Utilities meeting has been changed to Wednesday, Aug. 12, instead of Aug. 5. The regular meeting will begin at 6 p.m. at the BPU administrative offices, 540 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kan. It is open to the public.

Public hearing planned Aug. 12 on solid waste plan
The Unified Government of Wyandotte County-Kansas City, Kan., Public Works Department will be holding a public hearing for the purpose of discussing the five-year update of the Wyandotte County Solid Waste Management Plan for 2015. The public hearing will be held at 3 p.m. Aug. 12 at the Unified Government Neighborhood Resource Center’s large meeting room, 4953 State Ave., Kansas City, Kan. All persons desiring to be heard with reference to the proposed five-year update of the Wyandotte County Solid Waste Management Plan will be heard at the public meeting.

Book sale Aug. 13-15 to benefit Bonner Springs Library
The quarterly book sale at Bonner Springs Library, 201 N. Nettleton, will be held from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 13, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday.Many new additions since the four-hour sale in July are available including a great number of young adult and western novels. Nothing costs more than $1 with bargains as low as 25 cents. Specials will be posted each day, come and discover a new author or a like-new volume by one of your favorites.

Rear admiral to speak at scholarship award meeting of KCK Women’s Chamber
Rear Admiral Rebecca McCormick-Boyle will be the guest speaker at the Wednesday, Aug. 19, meeting of the Kansas City, Kan., Women’s Chamber of Commerce. McCormick-Boyle is the commander of Navy Medicine Education and Training. She also serves as the Navy Nurse Corps director. The program will include scholarship awards. The KCK Women’s Chamber will award four scholarships this year. Recipients are Kendra Lawrence, Cecilia Ndungu, Lacy Davidson and Melissa Cooper. A fundraiser will be held, with donations going to the scholarship fund. The meeting will begin with networking at 11:30 a.m. Aug. 19 at Kansas City Kansas Community College Technical Education Center, 6565 State Ave., Kansas City, Kan. Lunch and the program will be from noon to 1 p.m. The cost for lunch is $20 for members, $25 for nonmembers and $15 for students. Mayor Mark Holland’s Listening Tour next will visit District 4 at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 25 at Wyandotte High School, 2501 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kan. TedxWyandotte event to be Sept. 15
The TedxWyandotte event scheduled for Saturday at Kansas City Kansas Community College has been postponed and rescheduled. The event will now be at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15, at KCKCC, 7250 State Ave. It will feature approximately six presenters speaking on the theme of “Breaking Through: Confronting the barriers that divide us and challenging ourselves to move beyond them.” Tickets already purchased will be valid for the new date in September. Free summer movies offered Aug. 4 to 6
Free family-friendly movies will be offered on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 10 a.m. at the Legends 14 Theatres in Kansas City, Kan. The free movies on Aug. 4 to 6 will be “Space Chimps,” rated G, and “Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb,” rated PG. Doors open at 9 a.m., all ages may attend. Seating is limited to availability on a first-come-first-serve basis. The schedule is subject to change. Current feature films are not included in the free admission.

Night Out Against Crime program to be Aug. 4
A Night Out Against Crime program will take place from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 4 at the Kansas National Guard Armory, 18th and Ridge, Kansas City, Kan. This year there will be a “Remembering Our Fallen Exhibit,” which pays tribute to soldiers who were killed in action while serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. The first responders from Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kan., elected officials, Livable Neighborhood groups, and informational booths plan to be represented. Target is providing food for the event.
