Safe Halloween event planned Saturday, Oct. 31, at Eisenhower Recreation
A safe Halloween event for children will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31, at the Eisenhower Recreation Center, 2901 N. 72nd, Kansas City, Kan. There will be free hot dogs and candy for children, with games planned. Day of the Dead celebration planned at library Nov. 2
The West Wyandotte Library will hold a Day of the Dead celebration from 6 to 8 p.m. on Nov. 2. Those attending may make their own piñata, decorate a sugar skull, take pictures with La Catrina, help decorate an altar for a loved one and witness the dancing and singing of Calpulli Iskally Mitotiyotl. There will also be Tamales, pan de muerto (bread of the dead), coffee and hot chocolate. West Wyandotte Library is a part of Kansas City, Kan., Public Library. Hate crimes symposium is Wednesday in KCK
U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom will speak during an all-day hate crimes symposium Nov. 4 in Kansas City, Kan. The event is free and open to the public, but registration is required.“The public – and law enforcement – need to be more aware of the problem of hate crimes generally, and against the LGBTQ community in particular,” Grissom said. “We need more and stronger partnerships with local communities to prevent hate crimes and to enhance prosecutions against offenders when they occur.” Featured speakers will include Dennis and Judy Shepard, the parents of Matthew Shepard, founders of the Matthew Shepard Foundation. Their son was beaten, tortured and left to die near Laramie, Wyoming, in October 1998. The case helped to raise public awareness of hate crimes and led Congress to pass the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crime Prevention Act. Other speakers will include Dave O’Malley, who investigated Shepard’s death, Kristi L. Donahue of the FBI, Kristy Parker of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, Amanda Spee, FBI special agent, and Crystal Middlestadt an OVC consultant – resource development director, Grassroots Institute for Fundraising Training. The event is set for 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Nov. 4, at the Reardon Civic Center at the Hilton Garden Inn, 520 Minnesota, Kansas City, Kan. Registration is required. BPU to meet Nov. 4
The Board of Public Utilities will meet for a work session at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 4, at 540 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kan. Open house Thursday on Leavenworth Road improvements
An open house will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, about Leavenworth Road improvements. The open house will be held at Christ the King Church, Davern Hall, 3024 N. 53rd St. The public may attend and may make comments to the designers of the Leavenworth Road improvements from 63rd Street to 38th Street. Improvements may include sidewalks and bike paths. It will be a drop-in style event. There will be refreshments.
Chili supper, silent auction planned at Grinter Place
A chili supper and silent auction is scheduled at 4 p.m. Nov. 7 at Grinter Place historic site, 1420 S. 78th St., Kansas City, Kan. Annual Wyandotte County Veterans Day commemoration to be Nov. 7
The annual Wyandotte County Veterans Day commemoration will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, at the Salvation Army Harbor Light Village, 6723 State Ave., Kansas City, Kan. The event is presented by the Kansas City, Kan., Women’s Chamber of Commerce. This year’s event, from 10 a.m. to noon, will include a special recognition of Vietnam War veterans, on the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War. Groups expected to participate in the event include the Kansas City, Kan., Police Department Drum and Pipe Corps, Piper High School Music in Motion and Salvation Army Music Ensemble. There will be special speakers, veteran resources, commemorative displays, free giveaways and a brunch.
