Program shows parents how to pay for college
Parents and guardians of seniors in the Kansas City, Kan., Public Schools are encouraged to attend one of the upcoming “Financing College” events. The focus will be on technical schools, two-year and four-year colleges. Five different sessions will be held across the district to provide assistance with the completion of FAFSA applications, college financial aid, and more. Remaining sessions dates and times:

Program offered on simple seasonal meals
“Simple Seasonal Meals,” a program on growing and preparing your own food, will be offered from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 1, at the K-State Research and Extension office of Wyandotte County, 1216 N. 79th St., Kansas City, Kan. (west of K-mart). The program will discuss fresh fruits and vegetables that you can buy or grow, and it will include recipe selections for the four seasons, as well as tips on purchasing and storing produce. The Master Food Volunteers will present the program. A minimum fee of $5 will be for program materials and samples. Those attending may bring their own lunch, and water will be provided. Master Gardeners sponsor gardening program March 3
The Wyandotte County Extension Master Gardeners are sponsoring “Colorful Shade Gardening: Beyond Hostas,” from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, March 3. Rob Mortko, known as “the hosta guy,” and owner of Made in the Shade Gardens in Olathe, Kan., will be sharing his expertise, as he discusses the many options to create balance and diversity in the shady landscape. He’ll cover the different degrees of shade as well as the seemingly endless number of plants which are ideally suited for the shade. Opening day at lake to be March 5
Opening day at Wyandotte County Lake is Saturday, March 5. Gates open for fishing at 6 a.m. This year the Leavenworth Road Association will be serving biscuits and sausage gravy at Davis Hall. Serving will be 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. The biscuits and gravy breakfast with sausage, hash browns and drink will be $10 for adults and $5 for children.

Sister Souljah to appear at KCK Library April 16
Kansas City, Kan., Public Library will be the host of bestselling author Sister Souljah as part of the tour for her latest book, “A Moment of Silence: Midnight III.” The event will take place April 16 at the Main Library, 625 Minnesota Ave. Sister Souljah will discuss her books, writing process, and inspiration. There will be a book signing following the discussion. Activist, educator, hip hop artist, and bestselling author Sister Souljah is best known for her autobiography, “No Disrespect,” and her novel, “The Coldest Winter Ever.” As a community activist, she participated in the anti-apartheid movement, organized rallies against racially motivated crimes, created the African Youth Survival Camp, and worked as the executive director of Daddy’s House Social Programs. She is a graduate of Rutgers University and was also educated at Cornell University and University of Salamanca.
