ServSafe course planned June 14
A ServSafe course is planning from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 14, at the K-State Research and Extension office, Wyandotte County, 1216 N. 79th St., Kansas City, Kan. This class is great for anyone who works in food service or is interested in food service employment. Leavenworth Road Association to meet June 14
The Leavenworth Road Association will meet Tuesday, June 14, at Eisenhower Center, 2901 N. 72nd St., Kansas City, Kan. A potluck dinner and social hour will begin at 6 p.m., followed by the meeting at 7 p.m. The guest speaker at the meeting will be a Unified Government codes officer. BPU changes meeting date to June 16
The Board of Public Utilities will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 16, at the BPU administrative offices, 540 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kan. There is no work session before the regular meeting June 16. Also, the meeting has been moved from the regular Wednesday meeting date to Thursday that week. After a time for visitors, there will be a 20/20 Leadership update, a Wyandotte Economic Development Council update, approval of the BPU personnel code, net metering policy approval, board comments and general manager comments.

Shepherd’s Center to hold Adventures in Learning June 17
The Shepherd’s Center of Kansas City, Kan., will hold an Adventures in Learning program on Friday, June 17, at the Grace Lutheran Church, 333 Wood Ave. The day starts with health screenings and fellowship at 9 a.m. At 10 a.m., those who attend may choose from a travelogue on Mount Rainier and Mount Olympus by Ed SHutt; and a presentation on issues by Bridgette Jobe, Convention and Visitors Bureau. At 11 a.m. will be a presentation on the history of baseball by Ed Shutt, and a presentation on nonverbal communication by Mary Hunt. Legends Outlets will again offer free outdoor entertainment through its Live at the Legends Summer Concert Series on Saturday evenings in June and July. Free screenings for breast cancer to be offered June 20
Free screenings for breast cancer will be offered for qualified uninsured women in Kansas at the Keeler Women’s Center, 2220 Central Ave., Kansas City, Kan. Community health fair planned June 25
A community health fair is planned from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 25, at 1240 Troup Ave., Kansas City, Kan. Sponsored by Mt. Carmel Redevelopment Corp., the health fair will feature more than 90 health organizations. Health screenings will include kidney, blood glucose, immunizations and free mammograms for uninsured women ages 40 to 64. Along with screenings, there will be information about health and nutrition, financial services and other community resources. The Dr. Norge W. Jerome Passport to Good Health Fair is free and open to the public. “The purpose of this event is to increase health awareness by providing health screenings, activities, materials, demonstrations, and information; increase awareness of local, state, and national health services and resources; motivate participants to make positive health behavior changes; provide immunizations for children and adults; teach self-care practices; identify topics and participants for future extension educational health programs; and establish extension agents as a source for educational health programming in the metropolitan area,’ stated Marie Frasure, community outreach director. Once participants have been screened and have visited exhibitors on the inside, there will be food and family oriented activities featured on the outside with entertainment, games, prizes, face painting, animal balloons, funnel cakes and more beginning at noon. “The Dr. Norge W. Jerome Passport to Good Health Fair will kick start our health and nutrition initiatives scheduled to begin this summer. It is our desire to promote community engagement and support for individuals-families in need to facilitate healthy lifestyles,” Pamela Smart, Mt. Carmel Redevelopment Corp. executive director, said.

1951 flood to be remembered at historical society meeting
The 1951 flood will be the topic at the June 26 meeting of the Wyandotte County Historical Society and Museum, 631 N. 126th St., Bonner Springs, Kan. It will be the 65th anniversary commemoration of the flood that caused severe damage to the Kansas City area, including Kansas City, Kan. The meeting will begin at 2 p.m.

Benefit concert planned for slain detective’s family
The Kansas City, Kan., Community Orchestra, under the direction of Jeff Beck, will present a benefit concert June 30 for the family of Detective Brad Lancaster. Lancaster lost his life recently in the line of duty. The concert will begin at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 30, at Trinity Community Church, 5010 Parallel Parkway, Kansas City, Kan. Admission is free. All donations should be made to The Brad Lancaster Foundation.

Class on garden photography planned July 7
A class on garden photography is planned at 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, July 7, at the Wyandotte County Extension Office, 1216 N. 79th St., Kansas City, Kan. Bruce Hogle will present the class, and the host is the Wyandotte County Extension Master Gardeners. There is a fee of $5 payable at the door. The class will show participants how to take beautiful photos of their gardens and closeups of flowers and wildlife. There will be information about using different lenses, filters and other photographic tools. Hogle’s photos are regularly published in Kansas! magazine and calendar. KCK Women’s Chamber going to lunch challenge at Harvesters
The Kansas City, Kan., Women’s Chamber of Commerce will go to Harvesters for the Lunch Challenge on Wednesday, July 13. Those attending will participate in a team-building program to help work toward a common goal and raise awareness about hunger. The event will be about two hours long. Harvesters is at 3801 Topping, Kansas City, Mo. The cost of the luncheon will be $25 per person.

Free workshop offered on ‘Take Control of Your Chronic Condition’
A free workshop for people with chronic diseases will start on Wednesday, July 13, at the Keeler Women’s Center, 2220 Central Ave., Kansas City, Kan. “Take Control of Your Chronic Condition” is a free 2.5-hour workshop held each week for six weeks, and will cover chronic disease self-management and diabetes self-management. The workshop will be from 2 to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesdays. Facilitators of the workshop will be Nozella Brown and Lori Wuellner, family and consumer sciences agents from K-State Research and Extension, Wyandotte County. Spirituality-based journaling discussed

No special writing skills are needed. There will be an emphasis on the importance of self-understanding. The program is presented by Pat Callaghan. Scholarship golf tournament planned June 8
The Kansas City, Kan., Foundation for Excellence will hold the 26th annual Scholarship Golf Tournament on June 8 at Sunflower Hills Golf Course, 122nd and Riverview, Bonner Springs, Kan. There will be a shotgun start for the morning flight at 7:30 a.m., after registration and breakfast at 6:30 a.m. Lunch and awards will be at 1 p.m. at the George Meyn Center. There is also an afternoon flight beginning at 1 p.m. after the lunch. Dinner and awards will be at 6 p.m. at the George Meyn Center. Proceeds from the tournament will go toward scholarships for at least 15 Kansas City, Kan., Public Schools seniors. 1951 flood to be remembered at historical society meeting
The 1951 flood will be the topic at the June 26 meeting of the Wyandotte County Historical Society and Museum, 631 N. 126th St., Bonner Springs, Kan.
