Wyandotte County Fair to end today
The last day of the Wyandotte County Fair is today. Hours are noon to 10 p.m. July 16 at the fairgrounds, 13700 Polfer Road, Kansas City, Kan. The event includes a carnival, entertainment, contests, animal exhibits, food and more. Admission is free, and there is a $5 per car charge for parking. Today, there is a mud run scheduled at 7 p.m., with a separate fee. There is also a fee for carnival rides. Today’s events also include a pie contest, a free performance by the Kristy Dance Studio at 1 p.m., a free concert by Alan Thorne Gospel Music at 7 p.m., the 4-H Parade of Champions at 7 p.m. and many other events. Buzz Beach Ball concert scheduled today
The Buzz Beach Ball concert is scheduled July 16 and 17 at Children’s Mercy Park, Kansas City, Kan. Doors open at 2 p.m. Bands will start to play at 2:45 p.m. Parking will be at the Kansas Speedway. Bands on the program for Saturday, July 16, are Cage the Elephant, Fitz and the Tantrums, Bleachers, X Ambassadors, Violent Femmes, The Strumbellas, J. Roddy Walston and The Business, Bear Hands, Kitten, Hembree, The Moth and the Flame, and Brave the Spirit. On Sunday, July 17, scheduled to appear are Alabama Shakes, Glass Animals, Portugal. ACT Raising Safe Kids program scheduled
The ACT Raising Safe Kids program will be held from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on eight Mondays, through Aug. 29, at the Keeler Women’s Center, 2220 Central Ave., Kansas City, Kan. UG plans budget workshop on July 18
The Unified Government Commission will meet for a budget workshop at 5 p.m. Monday, July 18, on the fifth floor conference room, Suite 515, at City Hall, 701 N. 7th St., Kansas City, Kan. According to the agenda, topics that may be discussed include tax reduction and long-range financial plan, the capital maintenance improvement project plan for Fairfax, a quiet zone on K-32, Argentine Recreation Center, John F. Kennedy Recreation Center, courthouse security, fire station, accessibility issues for current parks and pool, equipment and personnel for maintenance of public spaces that are not parks.

KCK school board to meet July 19

Free workshop offered on ‘Take Control of Your Chronic Condition’
A free workshop for people with chronic diseases is being held on Wednesdays at the Keeler Women’s Center, 2220 Central Ave., Kansas City, Kan. “Take Control of Your Chronic Condition” is a free 2.5-hour workshop held each week for six weeks, and will cover chronic disease self-management and diabetes self-management. The workshop will be from 2 to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesdays. Facilitators of the workshop will be Nozella Brown and Lori Wuellner, family and consumer sciences agents from K-State Research and Extension, Wyandotte County. The Board of Public Utilities will meet at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 20, for a work session at the board offices, 540 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kan. Christmas in July parade to be July 23

Public hearing planned on UG budget July 25
A public hearing on the Unified Government budget has been scheduled following the 5 p.m. standing committee meetings on Monday, July 25, in the Commission Chambers, lobby level, City Hall, 701 N. 7th St., Kansas City, Kan. Besides the UG budget, the hearing will be on the CDBG, HOME and ESG budgets.

Comedy magic show planned at Turner library

Night Out Against Crime to be Aug. 2
National Night Out Against Crime will be held from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 2, at the National Guard Armory, 18th and Ridge, Kansas City, Kan. There will be a “Remembering Our Fallen” special tribute honoring Detective Brad Lancaster given by Police Chief Terry Zeigler. Alcott to sponsor classical music concert on Aug. 13
The Alcott Arts Center Foundation is bringing Daniel Maltz to Kansas City, Kan., at 7 p.m. Aug. 13. The concert will take place at Trinity Community Church, 5010 Parallel Parkway, Kansas City, Kan. Maltz, an international concert pianist, will play Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin and Schumann in a solo recital. A young adult, he is based in Vienna, Austria, and was born in South Carolina. He regularly appears in concert in Europe and the United States, and will make his debut at Carnegie Hall in October 2016. BPU charity golf tournament to be Sept. 10
The BPU Employee Charity Golf Corp. will hold its annual Charity Golf Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 10, at Dub’s Dread Golf Course in Kansas City, Kan. As part of its ongoing commitment to the community, BPU employees sponsor and hold this annual golf event which, to date, has raised nearly $500,000 for charities and nonprofits in Wyandotte County. The 2016 tournament kicks off with registration and a continental breakfast at 7 a.m., followed by a shotgun start at 8 a.m. The individual entry fee is $95, which includes greens fees, cart, a continental breakfast, refreshments on the course, and an awards dinner with prizes and free give-aways after the tournament. Candidate forum planned July 12
A candidate forum, sponsored by Business West, neighborhood associations and Kansas City Kansas Community College, is planned at 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 12, at the Upper Jewell Building, KCKCC, 7250 State Ave. The forum is scheduled from 6 to 9 p.m. Candidates for contested races for U.S. Senate, U.S. House, state representative, judge and district attorney have been invited. The primary election is Aug. 2. After a brief introduction by each candidate, there will be questions and answers from a panel of journalists and neighborhood leaders. It is not a debate format. After the forum, the candidate forum will be shown on the college’s community access channel. It is Channel 17 on Time Warner cable and Channel 146 on Google TV.

Leavenworth Road Association to meet July 12

Shepherd’s Center to hold Adventures in Learning program July 15
The Shepherd’s Center of Kansas City, Kan., will hold an Adventures in Learning program on July 15 at Grace Lutheran Church, 3333 Wood Ave., Kansas City, Kan. The program begins with health screenings and fellowship at 9 a.m. From 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., a travelogue will be presented by Ed Shutt on Bryce Canyon and Zion National Parks. Live at the Legends summer concert to be July 2
Legends Outlets will again offer free outdoor entertainment through its Live at the Legends Summer Concert Series on Saturday evenings in June and July. NAACP to meet July 5
The Kansas City, Kan., Branch NAACP will meet on Tuesday, July 5, at the Bethany Medical Building, second floor meeting room, 21 N. 12th St., Kansas City, Kan. The executive meeting will begin at 6 p.m. followed by the general membership meeting at 7 p.m. All members are encouraged to attend. Renee Henry, candidate for judge, and Rep. Support group to meet July 5
The Pregnancy and Infant Loss Support Group will meet from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 5, at the Keeler Women’s Center, 2220 Central Ave., Kansas City, Kan. It is a facilitated support group for family who have recently or some time ago, experienced the loss of miscarriage, stillbirth or infant loss. BPU to meet July 6
The Board of Public Utilities will meet on Wednesday, July 6, at the BPU offices, 540 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kan. The work session begins at 5 p.m. and the regular meeting at 6 p.m. On the agenda for the work session is a board update and general manager update; and a project bond update. On the agenda for the regular session are a visitors time; financial reports for April and May; board comments; general manager comments; and a closed executive session.

Class on garden photography planned July 7
A class on garden photography is planned at 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, July 7, at the Wyandotte County Extension Office, 1216 N. 79th St., Kansas City, Kan. Bruce Hogle will present the class, and the host is the Wyandotte County Extension Master Gardeners. There is a fee of $5 payable at the door. The class will show participants how to take beautiful photos of their gardens and closeups of flowers and wildlife. There will be information about using different lenses, filters and other photographic tools. Hogle’s photos are regularly published in Kansas! magazine and calendar. Special UG budget session scheduled July 7
The Unified Government will hold a special session on the budget at 5 p.m. Thursday, July 7, in the Commission Chambers, lobby level, City Hall, 701 N. 7th St., Kansas City, Kan. The administrator’s budget will be presented. The regular UG Commission meeting is expected to be at 7 p.m. July 7.

Free workshop offered on ‘Take Control of Your Chronic Condition’
A free workshop for people with chronic diseases will start on Wednesday, July 13, at the Keeler Women’s Center, 2220 Central Ave., Kansas City, Kan. “Take Control of Your Chronic Condition” is a free 2.5-hour workshop held each week for six weeks, and will cover chronic disease self-management and diabetes self-management. The workshop will be from 2 to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesdays. Facilitators of the workshop will be Nozella Brown and Lori Wuellner, family and consumer sciences agents from K-State Research and Extension, Wyandotte County. Shepherd’s Center to hold Adventures in Learning program July 15
The Shepherd’s Center of Kansas City, Kan., will hold an Adventures in Learning program on July 15 at Grace Lutheran Church, 3333 Wood Ave., Kansas City, Kan. The program begins with health screenings and fellowship at 9 a.m. From 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., a travelogue will be presented by Ed Shutt on Bryce Canyon and Zion National Parks. Also from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., Sheriff Don Ash will speak. From 11 a.m. to noon, Ed Shutt will present “History of Baseball, part 2.” Also from 11 a.m. to noon, the Rev. Ken Nettling will offer words of inspiration. Lunch is pot luck at noon. Those attending may bring a dish to share. The Shepherd’s Center will provide meat, paper goods, coffee and water. Spirituality-based journaling discussed
Spirituality-based journaling, “Righting Your Body, Mind and Spirit,” is planned from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 13, and Aug. 10 at the Keeler Women’s Center, 2220 Central Ave., Kansas City, Kan.
