Free tax preparation assistance offered at KCKCC
Kansas City Kansas Community College is working with NextStep KC and the United Way of Greater Kansas City to provide free federal and state income tax preparation for qualified individuals. The service, which started Feb. 1, is available to taxpayers with incomes of less than $54,000. Those who qualify should go to Room 3632 in the Flint Building on the KCKCC main campus, 7250 State Ave. at the following times:
• 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays (with the exception of March 15)
• 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays (with the exception of March 18)
• 1 to 4 p.m. Saturdays (during February and on April 15 only)
The preparation is a joint venture between students in KCKCC’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program and NextStep KC., a community-based nonprofit that works to provide affordable financial services to low and moderate income families. Tax assistance is on a first-come, first-served basis. Lines form in advance, so arrive early, as spots will likely be full as soon as the assistance time opens. Please do not email or call the location. Walk-in clients only. The free tax preparation service is only available for federal returns as well as Kansas and Missouri state returns. It is not available for Schedule E (rental or royalty income), Schedule F (farm income) or estate and trust returns. Only 2016 returns will be prepared in February. Help offered with income tax returns
The Turner Community Library, 831 S. 55th, is offering the AARP Tax Aide program from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, March 16, and subsequent Thursdays. Recycling planned at the Bonner library
The Bonner Springs City Library, 201 N. Nettleton Ave., Bonner Springs, is offering paper recycling from March 9 through 15. ProShred Security will have locked boxes at the library for the deposit of paper to be recycled. The recycling will be on the last day of the event. Recital planned March 13 at Main KCK Library
The Goldenberg Duo will present a recital of familiar classical works for violin and piano from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, March 13, at the Main Kansas City, Kansas, Public Library, café area, 625 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. Susan Goldenberg is a violinist with the Kansas City Symphony. William Goldenberg is chair of the piano department at Northern Illinois University.

Leavenworth Road Association to meet March 14
The Leavenworth Road Association will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 14, at the Eisenhower Recreation Center, 2901 N. 72nd St., Kansas City, Kansas. A potluck dinner and social hour will begin at 6 p.m., with meatloaf provided by the association. Those attending may bring a dish. Wyandotte County District Attorney Mark Dupree will be the guest speaker at 7 p.m. He will discuss changes he is making and programs offered to school-age youth.

Book club to meet Tuesday at Keeler Center

Chronic disease management class offered
The Shepherd’s Center of KCK, in partnership with KU’s Landon Center on Aging, will offer a free weekly Chronic Disease Management class, beginning Wednesday, March 1, and running through Wednesday, April 12. Sessions will be held from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Pemberton Senior Living community room, 8301 Walker Ave. Register by calling Janet Cozza at 913-588-1266. The class is open to anyone who would like to learn how to better manage an existing chronic disease.

Blood drive scheduled March 15-16

Support group offered on grief management

Democrats to meet March 18
The Wyandotte County Third Saturday Democratic Breakfast will meet Saturday, March 18, at The Dotte Spot Bar and Grill, 8123 Parallel Parkway, Kansas City, Kansas. Speaking this month will be State Rep. Louis Ruiz, D-31st Dist., and Teresa Garcia Krusor, who is the Democratic National Committeewoman from Kansas. Krusor is also the former Kansas Democratic Party vice chair and secretary. The breakfast buffet will be available at 8:15 a.m. and the program begins at 9:15 a.m. All Democrats are invited to attend. The cost for the breakfast is $10, or $6 for students and those on a limited incomes. There is a $2 for coffee if you are not purchasing breakfast. You are not required to purchase breakfast to attend. Those who are planning to attend are asked to make a reservation by Thursday, March 16, to [email protected]. While reservations are not required to attend, they are important for planning the breakfast.

Jazz Cabaret planned March 23
The KCKCC Jazz Cabaret is at 6 p.m. March 23 in Upper Jewell on the KCKCC main campus, 7250 State Ave. Tickets are $25 and $15 for those who wear a military uniform or 1940s attire. Tickets are $10 after 7:30 p.m. for dancing only. Children 10-years and under are free. The theme for this year’s Jazz Cabaret is the 1940s. Kansas cookbook program offered March 30
“At Home on the Range (Unique Kansas Cookbooks)” will be offered at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 30, at the Bonner Springs City Library, 201 N. Nettleton, Bonner Springs, Kansas. Presented by the Kansas Humanities Council and the Bonner Springs Library, the program features Louise M. Hanson, collector of Kansas cookbooks. Her talk will provide a survey of Kansas cookbooks from 1874 to the present, which reveal not only changes in food ways but also poems, prayers, personal reflections and histories.

Exercise program for older adults offered
“Stay Strong, Stay Healthy,” an 8-week exercise program for older adults, will be offered beginning April 4. The program targets strength, balance and flexibility. The program is held at the K-State Research and Extension office, 1216 N. 79th, Kansas City, Kan. The first program will be from 11 a.m. to noon April 4. Eric Jerome Dickey to appear in KCK
Kansas City, Kan., Public Library will be the host for popular urban fiction author Eric Jerome Dickey as part of the tour for his latest book “Finding Gideon.” The event will take place at 2:30 p.m. April 29 at the Reardon Convention Center at 5th and Minnesota Avenue, Kansas City, Kan. Following a moderated question-and-answer session, Dickey will sign books. Books will be available for purchase and a limited number of free copies will be given away to the first to arrive. KCKCC to present Sherlock Holmes play March 2-5
The Kansas City Kansas Community College Theatre Department is returning to the stage to bring to life a classic tale of mystery and intrigue. “Baskerville: A Sherlock Holmes Mystery” follows Sherlock and Dr. Watson as they try to solve their greatest case. The production is at 7:30 p.m. March 2, 3 and 4 at the KCKCC Performing Arts Center and 2:30 p.m. March 5. Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students and senior citizens. Keeler center closed March 6-9
The Keeler Women’s Center, 2220 Central Ave., Kansas City, Kan., will be closed for regular activities and classes March 6-9, except for a Lenten retreat on March 8. The center will resume regular programs on March 13.

BPU to meet March 8

Fairfax group to meet March 9
The Fairfax Industrial Association will meet from 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday, March 9, for a luncheon. State of the UG address planned Feb. 28

Recycling offered at library
Paper recycling will be offered from March 9 to 15 at the Bonner Springs City Library, 201 N. Nettleton eve., Bonner Springs. ProShred Security will have locked boxes at the library for the deposit of paper to be shredded the last day of the event. Also, there will be electronics recycling from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, March 11, at the Bonner library’s back parking lot. For the most part, it is a free service, but there is a charge for microwave ovens, CRT screens, projection and tube televisions and hard-drive cleaning.

Chronic disease management class offered
The Shepherd’s Center of KCK, in partnership with KU’s Landon Center on Aging, will offer a free weekly Chronic Disease Management class, beginning Wednesday, March 1, and running through Wednesday, April 12.
