Support group to meet May 2

Polski Day kicks off with a parade at 11 a.m. May 6 at 14th and Central, ending at All Saints parish, where the event will be from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Music, food and games are planned. CVB to hold annual tourism celebration May 9
The Kansas City, Kansas, Convention and Visitors Bureau will hold its annual tourism celebration on Tuesday, May 9, at the Reardon Convention Center, 500 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. Bike safety program planned May 20
A bike safety program, Hawks, Helmets and Handlebars, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 20, at the New Bethel Church, 745 Walker Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. At the free event, there will be a bike safety course, a Baby Jay appearance, and a remote live broadcast by 99.6 The Point. The first 150 children to attend will receive a free KU bike helmet. A town hall meeting for the Unified Government Commission, 8th District, will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 25, at the Eisenhower Recreation Center, 2901 N. 72nd St., Kansas City, Kansas. Light refreshments will be from 6 to 6:30 p.m. The meeting is sponsored by UG Commissioner Jane Philbrook. Those attending will hear updates from Commissioner Philbrook and some of the UG staff. This meeting is not devoted to the Indian Springs proposal; a public meeting on that topic is April 27 at City Hall.

Job fair planned April 26
The 2017 “Get Hired – Kansas City” Job Fair will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 26, in the KCKCC Field House, 7250 State Ave. The job fair is free and open to the public, and about 1,000 individuals attended last year. Special accommodations for veterans and disabled will be from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. The job fair is sponsored by the Entrepreneurship and Workforce Center at KCKCC. Moon Marble demonstration planned April 26
A Moon Marble demonstration, featuring Moon Marble Co. staff, will be from 3 to 5 p.m. April 26 at the Bonner Springs City Library, 201 N. Nettleton. There will be a marble discussion, with marble games, and Moon Marble staff will identify marbles that customers bring in.

BPU to meet April 26
The Board of Public Utilities will meet on Wednesday, April 26. The regular meeting will begin at 6 p.m. at the BPU administration building, 540 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. It is open to the public.

Civitan Club to meet Wednesday in KCK
Civitan, an International Community Service Organization is building a new Civitan Club in Kansas City, Kansas. The new club’s next meeting is at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 26, at The Dotte Spot, 8123 Parallel Parkway, Kansas City, Kansas. The Lancaster-Melton Peace Keepers Civitan Club is sponsored by the Lawrence ACTION Civitan Club. A spokesman said the club’s main objective is to keep the two officers’ memory alive by working together on projects that improve the community. It also hopes to increase the support of law enforcement officers in the community, as well as supporting efforts to help make the community a better place to live, work, and play. Civitan International was founded in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1917 and is celebrating its 100th year this year. Civitan Club membership is open to anyone who is at least 18 years old and of good character. All community members interested in serving and making a difference are encouraged to come out to the April 26 meeting.

‘Pretty Nails’ program offered

KCK Chamber’s annual meeting April 27 to celebrate 20th year of UG consolidation
The 2017 KCK Chamber Annual Meeting, entitled “WyCo Wins,” will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, April 27, at the Reardon Convention Center, located at 530 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. The program will feature fireside chats with area leader. Forks and Corks fundraiser to be April 27
Harvesters’ Forks and Corks fundraiser is planned from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 27, in the Grand Ballroom of the Kansas City Convention Center, Kansas City, Mo. The event was created in 1997 to support Harvesters’ hunger relief effort and is known as one of the top food and wine events in Kansas City. Annual quilt show to be April 28 at Grinter
The Quilters at Grinter Barn, 1400 S. 78th St., Kansas City, Kansas, are holding their annual quilt show from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, April 28, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 29. Barbara J. Eikmeier will be the guest speaker at a program at 1 p.m. Saturday. She is a well-known pattern and fabric designer who will present a trunk show and a look into how she started her line of fabrics. Admission to hear Eikmeier is $3 for adults and $1 for students. Children 5 and younger are free. Admission to the quilt show is free. Anyone who would like to enter a quilt in the show, or who has a quilt that needs to be finished, may stop in from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesdays at the basement of the Grinter Barn and talk to the quilters.

Youth advocacy fundraiser to be April 28
Leadership 2000, Class 31, will hold a Friday night youth advocacy fundraiser from 4:30 to 10 p.m. April 28 at St. John’s bowling alley, 414 Barnett Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. The event will benefit Wyandotte County youth served by Juvenile Intake and Assessment, and the Old Quindaro Museum. There is a fundraising goal of $10,000. A bowling tournament and a silent auction are among the fund-raising events planned April 28. Teams of five may sign up for a $125 registration fee. Individuals also may sign up for $25 per person. The deadline to register was Friday, April 21. Check-in will be at 4:30 p.m. for the 5 p.m. first round, and at 7:30 p.m. for the 8 p.m. second round. National Poetry Month to be marked with program April 28 in Bonner Springs
Members of the Bonner Springs Arts Alliance Wordslingers will read their original poetry during a program from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 28, at Third Space Coffee, 226 Oak St., Bonner Springs. The program is for anyone who wishes to read their poetry or listen and enjoy. Members of the Bonner Springs High School Forensics team also will be there to do recitations. Members of the Bonner Springs Teen Writers group also will attend. Community members may bring original poetry to share.

Young Child Fair planned April 29 at Bonner library
The seventh annual Young Child Fair, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 29, at the Bonner Springs City Library, 201 N. Nettleton, has a theme this year of “Books, Blocks, Bubbles and Barks.” There will be activities throughout the library, including Marshall and Chase from Paw Patrol; a show at 11 a.m. by the KC Disc Dogs; and reading to a therapy dog. In addition, the Young Child Fair includes an opportunity to play with blocks to learn about science and math; make and enjoy a snack; a special puppy storytime with guest readers; a free book; and the opportunity for families to receive information from local agencies. The event for families with young children is co-sponsored with the Bonner Springs-Edwardsville Public Schools Parents as Teachers. The program is free and open to the public.

Loyalty Day program planned April 29 at Rosedale Arch
The Rosedale Arch near 35th and Booth in Kansas City, Kansas, will be the site of a Loyalty Day Celebration planned for 11 a.m. Saturday, April 29. The Veterans of Foreign Wars, along with the Rosedale Development Association and the Unified Government, are holding the celebration. The city of Louisburg’s VFW Post 7348 is the host of activities this year at the Rosedale Arch. Greg Goode is the commander of the VFW Post 7348. There will be patriotic music, a color guard, guest speakers and a wreath-laying ceremony from 11 a.m. to noon. The public is invited to the event, and there is more information at ksloyaltyday.us. Eric Jerome Dickey to appear in KCK
Kansas City, Kan., Public Library will be the host for popular urban fiction author Eric Jerome Dickey as part of the tour for his latest book “Finding Gideon.” The event will take place at 2:30 p.m. April 29 at the Reardon Convention Center at 5th and Minnesota Avenue, Kansas City, Kan. Free tax preparation assistance offered at KCKCC
Kansas City Kansas Community College is working with NextStep KC and the United Way of Greater Kansas City to provide free federal and state income tax preparation for qualified individuals. The service, which started Feb. 1, is available to taxpayers with incomes of less than $54,000. Those who qualify should go to Room 3632 in the Flint Building on the KCKCC main campus, 7250 State Ave. at the following times:
• 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays (with the exception of March 15)
• 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays (with the exception of March 18)
• 1 to 4 p.m. Saturdays (during February and on April 15 only)
The preparation is a joint venture between students in KCKCC’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program and NextStep KC., a community-based nonprofit that works to provide affordable financial services to low and moderate income families. Tax assistance is on a first-come, first-served basis. Lines form in advance, so arrive early, as spots will likely be full as soon as the assistance time opens. Please do not email or call the location. Walk-in clients only. The free tax preparation service is only available for federal returns as well as Kansas and Missouri state returns. It is not available for Schedule E (rental or royalty income), Schedule F (farm income) or estate and trust returns. Only 2016 returns will be prepared in February. The new club, the Lancaster-Melton Peace Keepers Civitan Club, is named in honor of the memory of Detective Brad Lancaster and Capt. Robert Melton of the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department. The club also honors the memory of other officers who have served in the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department, as well as current officers in this and other agencies in the metropolitan area. The club also welcomes people who have a “pay it forward” outlook on community service. The Lancaster-Melton Peace Keepers Civitan Club is sponsored by the Lawrence ACTION Civitan Club. A spokesman said the club’s main objectives are to keep the two officers’ memory alive by working together on projects that improve the community, increase the knowledge and support of law enforcement officers in the community, as well as supporting positive efforts to help make the community a better place to live, work, and play. Library to hold Heritage Festival April 15
The Kansas City, Kansas, Public Library is holding a Wyandotte County Heritage Festival from noon to 3 p.m. April 15. Events will be held at the West Wyandotte Library, 1737 N. 82nd St. This multi-generational event, designed for all ages, is in partnership with Freedom’s Frontier National Heritage Area and the Kansas Humanities Council. Children will enjoy a goat cart ride around the lawn, while the entire family visits with over a dozen local organizations that will entertain and educate them about Kansas and Wyandotte County’s rich history. At 2 p.m., Angela Bates, executive director of the Nicodemus Historical Society, will tell the story of Nicodemus, Kansas, the only remaining western community established by African-Americans during the reconstruction period after the Civil War. Annual quilt show to be April 28 at Grinter

Young Child Fair planned April 29 at Bonner library
The seventh annual Young Child Fair, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 29, at the Bonner Springs City Library, 201 N. Nettleton, has a theme this year of “Books, Blocks, Bubbles and Barks.” There will be activities throughout the library, including Marshall and Chase from Paw Patrol; a show at 11 a.m. by the KC Disc Dogs; and reading to a therapy dog. In addition, the Young Child Fair includes an opportunity to play with blocks to learn about science and math; make and enjoy a snack; a special puppy storytime with guest readers; a free book; and the opportunity for families to receive information from local agencies.
