Candidate forums planned July 24 and 25
Candidate forums are planned from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. July 24 and 25 at the St. Andrew Missionary Baptist Church, 2200 N. 53rd St., Kansas City, Kansas. According to Richard Mabion of the NAACP, candidates for the Board of Public Utilities, Kansas City Kansas College Board of Trustees and Kansas City, Kansas, Board of Education will be at the forum on Monday, July 24. Candidates for Unified Government mayor-CEO, Wyandotte County Sheriff and UG Commission will be at the forum on Tuesday, July 25. The forums are open to the public. The hosts of the forums on July 24 and 25 are the Baptist Ministers Union of Kansas City, Kansas, and the Kansas City, Kansas, NAACP. The primary election is Tuesday, Aug. 1.

UG plans public hearing on budget on Monday, July 24
A Unified Government budget meeting is scheduled at 5:30 p.m. Monday, July 24, when a public hearing will be held on the UG and CDBG budget, according to the UG agenda. The budget public hearing is expected to be held in the Commission Chambers, lobby level, City Hall, 701 N. 7th St., Kansas City, Kansas. After the hearing, a budget workshop could be held, if necessary. The budget is scheduled to be adopted at a meeting July 27.

Personal finances program planned
Participants will find out about managing their money and learning to make conscious decisions about their finances at a program from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Thursday, July 27, at the Keeler Women’s Center, 2220 Central Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. Nine free concerts to be offered this summer at Legends Outlets
The Legends Outlets will continue its free outdoor concert series, Legends Live, on Saturday evenings this summer. Some of the performers will be local bands. The concert series will include nine performances from 5 to 7 p.m. June 10 through Aug. 5 at the Civic Courtyard Fountain at The Legends Outlets, according to a spokesman. A range of styles, including popular music, classic rock, rock alternative, rhythm and blues, country hits and selections from the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and today will be featured. The concert series will end Aug. 5 with a family friendly performance tied to Legends Outlets’ Back-to-School event featuring children’s music, giveaways and activities. The Legends concerts are held near the fountain, near the Legends 14 Theatre, at 1843 Village West Parkway, Kansas City, Kansas. The Legends Live concert schedule includes:
July 29: Big Time Grain Company: Kansas City’s premier country western and country rock band performing crowd favorites from many artists.
Aug. 5: Mr. Stinky Feet and The Hiccups (family night): Award-winning kid rocker Jim “Mr. Stinky Feet” and his band, The Hiccups, performing popular children’s music.

Blood drive planned Aug. 2

Wyandotte County Back-to-School Fair to be Aug. 5
The annual 2017 Wyandotte County Back-to-School Fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, at the KCKCC Community Technical Education Center, 6565 State Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. The Back-to-School Fair is held for students who live in Wyandotte County who attend school (both public and private). Parents are required to provide proof of Wyandotte County residence. Parents and their children are invited to stop by for free school supplies. Free immunizations, physical exams, eye exams and free haircuts will also be provided. In addition to supplies, immunizations and physical exams, parents will have the opportunity to visit with representatives from a variety of community organizations who will offer information on services. Parents are required to bring proof of residence in Wyandotte County, such as a driver’s license or a utility bill and children must be accompanied by their parents at the Back-to-School Fair. UG budget meeting planned July 17
The next Unified Government budget meeting will be held at 5 p.m. Monday, July 17, at City Hall, fifth floor conference room, 701 N. 7th St., Kansas City, Kansas. Another budget meeting is scheduled at 6 p.m. July 20 in the fifth floor conference room. A public hearing on the UG budget will be held at 5:30 p.m. July 24 at the Commission Chambers, City Hall, with a budget workshop planned afterward. If needed a budget workshop will be held at 5 p.m. Thursday, July 27, with the adoption of the budget scheduled at 7 p.m. July 27 in the Commission Chambers.

Astronomy program scheduled July 18
Participants will learn about stars and constellations in a Starlab Planetarium program at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 18, at the Mr. and Mrs. F.L. Schlagle Library, 4051 West Drive, Kansas City, Kansas, at Wyandotte County Lake Park, 91st and Leavenworth Road. Caregivers support group to meet

BPU to meet July 19
The Board of Public Utilities will meet at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 19, for a work session at the BPU administrative office, 540 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. On the agenda for the work session are a board update, general manager update and a continuation of the board strategic plan. The regular session will be at 6 p.m. July 19. On the agenda are a visitors’ time, a report about the United Way hardship utility assistance program, an update on the June 17 storm, board comments and general manager comments.

Grinter Place Friends to hold fundraiser July 20
The Shop and Sip Vendor Fair, a fundraiser for Grinter Place, will be held from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 20, at the Grinter Barn, 1400 S. 78th, Kansas City, Kansas. There will be more than 30 vendors at the event. Admission will be $5 and includes wine and food sampling. Proceeds benefit the historic Grinter Place house at 78th and K-32, and its programs.

Wyandotte County Fair begins Tuesday
The annual Wyandotte County Fair begins Tuesday, July 11, and runs through Saturday, July 15, at the Wyandotte County Fairgrounds, 13700 Polfer Road, Kansas City, Kansas. The location is east of K-7 on Polfer Road. A carnival, exhibits, a petting zoo, entertainment and special arena events are planned, including a mud run at 6 p.m. Saturday. There is a separate charge for the mud run. 4-H members and open class contestants will exhibit their animals and their work in many categories. Food and drink will be available for purchase. There are special contests this year, including a fruit pie baking contest on Saturday. Hours of the fair are 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday. Admission is $5 per car. There is a charge for carnival rides. Candidate forum planned July 11
A forum for Unified Government mayoral candidates and Wyandotte County Sheriff candidates is planned July 11. The forum will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, July 11, at the First Baptist Church, 500 Nebraska Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. The forum is sponsored by Unity with a Purpose. The forum is free to the public. Doors will open at 5:45 p.m.

Leavenworth Road Association to meet July 11
