Downtown Holiday Lighting Festival to be Dec. 1
The mayor’s Downtown Holiday Lighting Festival will take place from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1, in front of Kansas City, Kansas, City Hall, 701 N. 7th St., Kansas City, Kansas. The event includes the tree lighting ceremony, a visit with Santa Claus, crafts and games for kids, holiday movies and popcorn, performances by choirs, bands and dance groups, and goodie bags for the first 1,000 children. Santa Express to start Dec. 2 at Ag Hall
The Santa Express will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 2 and 3, and Dec. 9 and 10, at the National Agricultural Center and Hall of Fame, Bonner Springs. Children may visit Santa I the depot, ride on the train, work on crafts, and have cookies and hot cocoa. Donations will benefit Farm Town restoration. Grinter Place to hold holiday events Dec. 2
Grinter Place is planning holiday events, Breakfast with Santa and Holiday with the Arts, on Saturday, Dec. 2, at the historic site at 78th and K-32 in Kansas City, Kansas. The Grinter barn, 1400 S. 78th St., will be the site of a Breakfast with Santa event from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Dec. 2. The breakfast will be from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Dec. 2, while lunch will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The cost for breakfast ranges from $3 to $7, while the cost of lunch will be $3. Children may have their pictures taken with Santa, receive a goodie bag and work on holiday crafts. They will receive their photos with Santa at the event. The Holiday with the Arts event will include visiting with artists and authors, and listening to music. There will be books, paintings and pictures available for purchase. There also will be a wine tasting from Rowe Ridge with cheese and crackers, she said. Tours of the Grinter House will be available. The event includes a portrayal of Moses Grinter by Bill Nicks, Grinter House curator, from 3 to 4 p.m. The Zane sisters will show and demonstrate beading during the event. Community meeting on future of northeast area to be Dec. 5
A community meeting on the future of the northeast area and developing a northeast area master plan will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 5, at Neff Packaging, 555 Sunshine Road, Kansas City, Kansas. Another community meeting on the northeast area master plan will take place at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 5, at Grant Elementary School, 1510 N. 4th St., Kansas City, Kansas. Initial findings, a vision for the northeast area, and early action projects to start the revitalization process will be discussed. Armistice Day to be topic of historical society presentation Sunday, Nov. 19
Guest speaker for the quarterly meeting of the Wyandotte County Historical Society and Museum at 2 p.m. Nov. 19 will be Jonathan Casey, archivist from the Liberty Memorial World War I Museum. He will speak about Armistice Day, Nov. 11, 1918, when an armistice was signed ending the hostilities on the western front of World War I. Also known as Veterans Day or Remembrance Day, the date was made a national holiday and events and traditions have grown around it. The meeting is free and open to the public. There will be refreshments.

Keeler to benefit from shopping Nov. 19

Thanksgiving Breakfast Dance to be Nov. 23 at Armory
Muddy Waters Jr., the oldest son of Muddy Waters, will headline the Thanksgiving Breakfast Dance Nov. 23 at the Kansas National Guard Armory, 18th and Ridge, Kansas City, Kansas. Waters Jr., also known as Mud Morganfield, will perform his father’s greatest hits at the event. Other highlights will include the son of Johnnie Taylor, T.J. Hooker-Taylor, performing his dad’s greatest hits. In addition, guitarist Memphis Mike, a local blues artist, will perform. Levee Town, a blues and rockabilly group, is returning to the event after about 10 years. Doors open at 9 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day with four hours of blues and jazz entertainment planned from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Breakfast, music and dance are included in the event. Play to be presented Nov. 12 at KCKCC
The Kansas City Kansas Community College Drama Club is presenting “Speech & Debate,” a play directed by a KCKCC student. Written by Stephen Karam, “Speech & Debate” follows three teenage misfits in Salem, Ore., who discover they are linked by a sex scandal that has rocked their town. When one of them sets out to expose the truth, secrets become currency, the stakes get higher and the trio’s connection grows deeper. The play does have adult situations. Parental guidance is advised. “Speech & Debate” ran Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and continues with a matinee performance Sunday, Nov. 12, at 2:30 p.m. The performance is in the KCKCC Performing Arts Center, 7250 State Ave. Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for senior citizens and non-KCKCC students. All KCKCC students, staff and faculty are admitted free with valid identification. “Speech & Debate” is a Drama Club production, directed by student Gary Enrique Bradley-Lopez in his first full play directorial debut. Grinter Jamboree to be Nov. 14
The Grinter Place Friends are bringing back their Jamboree, which will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Nov. 14, the second Tuesday of the month, at the Grinter Barn, 1400 S. 78th, Kansas City, Kansas. One was held during October and about 40 to 50 people attended. The MP3 Band will perform. There will be a cover charge of $5 per person, and a snack bar will be available to purchase light refreshments. Free diabetic foot ulcer seminar offered Nov. 15
The Providence Medical Center Wound Care Center will present a free Diabetic Foot Ulcer Seminar and Screening* at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, at Providence Medical Center 8929 Parallel Parkway, Kansas City, Kan. Local experts will present information on the role of diabetes in the development of foot ulcers and current treatments available for diabetic foot ulcers. Legends holiday tree lighting to be Nov. 18
The Legends Outlets will hold its 13th annual Legendary Tree Lighting Ceremony from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, at the shopping center at I-70 and I-435 in Kansas City, Kansas. A 45-foot synchronized animated holiday tree at the Civic Courtyard Fountain near the theater will be the centerpiece of the event. According to a spokesman, this year’s event will include a visit by Santa Claus, kids’ activities, free hot chocolate and s’mores, mascots roaming around, giveaways, and performances by five bands.
