Harlem Renaissance program to continue Feb. 1
The Kansas City, Kansas, Public Library will be celebrating the Harlem Renaissance with several events planned this winter. The Harlem Renaissance was an explosion of African-American art and culture in Harlem that started in 1918 and spanned the 1920s and 1930s. During January and February, the library will have art exhibits, movies, book clubs, and concerts, all celebrating the movement and people of Harlem – including an artist from Kansas. The inspiration for this event series was Aaron Douglas, a prominent and influential artist during the Harlem Renaissance. Douglas was born in Topeka, Kansas, and lived there until graduating from high school. Library patrons will be able to learn more about Douglas by attending events held in partnership with the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. Remaining events include Feb. 1 at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and Feb. 15 at South Branch Library. Eagle Days to continue Jan. 21
The 17th annual Eagle Days will continue Jan. 21 at the Mr. and Mrs. F.L. Schlagle Library, 4051 West Drive, in Wyandotte County Lake Park, 91st and Leavenworth Road. King Day celebration to be Jan. 15
“Continuing through Love and Peace in Times Like These” will be the theme of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday celebration Monday, Jan. 15, at the Reardon Center, Kansas City, Kansas. Pre-service events start at 10:45 a.m. with the formal program beginning at 11 a.m. The Rev. Dr. Calvin O. Butts III of New York, N.Y., is the featured speaker. He is the pastor of the Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem. He and his church are active in civil rights, social justice and economic development. Since 1999 he has served as president of the State University of New York at Old Westbury. The event Jan. 15 will begin with a Motorcade for Hunger at 9 a.m. at Mount Zion Baptist Church parking lot, 4th and Richmond, leaving at 10 a.m. and arriving at the Reardon Center. Mayor David Alvey and State Sen. Pat Pettey are scheduled to speak on Saturday, Jan. 20, at the Wyandotte County Third Saturday Democratic Breakfast. The buffet will begin at 8:15 a.m. with the program at 9 a.m. at Las Islas Marias, 7516 State Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. Alvey recently was sworn into office as the Unified Government mayor and chief executive officer. Pettey, D-6th Dist., is the chair of the Wyandotte County legislative delegation. Bomber history project to be topic of meeting
