The 57th annual Greater Kansas City Mayors’ Prayer Breakfast will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. Thursday, March 1, at the Kansas City Downtown Convention Center Ballroom, 301 W. 13th St., Kansas City, Mo. The guest speaker at the breakfast will be Lamar Hunt Jr., owner of the Kansas City Mavericks hockey team. The breakfast is co-sponsored by more than 30 area mayors. This year the breakfast will benefit the nonprofit Sheffield Place of Kansas City, which helps homeless mothers and their children become more self-sufficient. Container gardening program planned March 1
A program on container gardening will be offered at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, March 1, at the Wyandotte County Extension Office, Sunflower Room, 1208 N. 79th St., Kansas City, Kansas. To be covered in this program are simple design tips for choosing the right plants for success, whether they are flowers, green plants, succulents, herbs or vegetables. The opening day at Wyandotte County Lake will be Saturday, March 3. The event is a fundraiser for the Leavenworth Road Association. Biscuits and sausage, coffee, milk or orange juice will be available for $10 per person, or half-price for children under 10.

Dining with Diabetes program to begin March 7
Dining with Diabetes, a program that will help people learn about and manage Type 2 diabetes, will be held from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Wednesdays, March 7, 14, 21 and 28, at the Keeler Women’s Center, 2220 Central Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. The program includes information about planning meals and snacks with healthy recipes, cooking demonstrations and food sampling, motivation and support, ideas for being more active and an understanding of how diabetes affects one’s health. Heart health will be the theme of the Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, meeting of the Kansas City, Kansas, Women’s Chamber of Commerce. The meeting will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 14, at the Keenan Education Center, Auditorium C, at Providence Medical Center, 8929 Parallel Parkway, Kansas City, Kansas. It is scheduled in conjunction with American Heart Month during February. The guest speaker will be Dr. Venkat R. Pasnoori, who will speak on peripheral artery disease. Heart health to be discussed at Women’s Chamber meeting Feb. 14
Heart health will be the theme of the Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, meeting of the Kansas City, Kansas, Women’s Chamber of Commerce. The meeting will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 14, at the Keenan Education Center, Auditorium C, at Providence Medical Center, 8929 Parallel Parkway, Kansas City, Kansas. It is scheduled in conjunction with American Heart Month during February. The guest speaker will be Dr. Venkat R. Pasnoori, who will speak on peripheral artery disease. Providence Medical staff will be on hand after the program to conduct a simple, free peripheral artery disease screen for anyone interested. Also scheduled to be in attendance at the program will be Dr. Mistee Allen, a family medicine physician with Providence Medical Group. She will give a short presentation and will be available for questions about women and heart health. The cost of the event is $20 for members and $25 for nonmembers. Black history banquet planned Feb. 17
The 26th annual Black History and Scholarship Banquet will be at 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, at the Reardon Convention Center, 5th and Minnesota Avenue, Kansas City, Kansas. The guest speaker is Aaron Thomas, a native of Kansas City, Kansas, who is executive producer of the CBS series, S.W.A.T. Greater Kansas City Mayors’ Prayer Breakfast to be March 1
The 57th annual Greater Kansas City Mayors’ Prayer Breakfast will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. Thursday, March 1, at the Kansas City Downtown Convention Center Ballroom, 301 W. 13th St., Kansas City, Mo. The guest speaker at the breakfast will be Lamar Hunt Jr., owner of the Kansas City Mavericks hockey team. The breakfast is co-sponsored by more than 30 area mayors. This year the breakfast will benefit the nonprofit Sheffield Place of Kansas City, which helps homeless mothers and their children become more self-sufficient.
