Raising safe kids program offered
A program, “ACT Raising Safe Kids,” will be offered from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on eight Mondays beginning May 14 at the Keeler Women’s Center, 2220 Central Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. The program will discuss how to learn and use positive discipline, anger management and conflict resolution skills. Graduation ceremony planned May 16
The 500 REACH Virtual Learning Center will award high school diplomas on May 16 to students who have successfully completed their coursework for a high school diploma. Candidates to speak at Democratic meeting Saturday
The Wyandotte County Third Saturday Democratic Breakfast Saturday, May 19, will feature some candidates for the Democratic nomination for Kansas governor. The breakfast begins with a buffet at 8:15 a.m. followed by the program at 9 a.m. at Las Islas Marias, 7516 State Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. Scheduled to speak at the breakfast are three candidates for governor, Carl Brewer, former Wichita mayor; Josh Svaty, former state representative and state agriculture secretary; and Michael Tabman, retired FBI special agent in charge and news commentator. Three other candidates for governor, Laura Kelly, a state senator; Jim Ward, a state representative; and Dr. Arden Andersen, spoke at the April breakfast meeting. Since then, Rep. Ward has withdrawn from the race. The cost of the buffet is $10, or $6 for students and those on limited income. Reservations are requested to [email protected] by Friday, May 18, for those planning to attend. It is not necessary to RSVP, but it is encouraged. It is not necessary to purchase a breakfast to listen to the program. The meeting is open to all Democrats, and all Democratic candidates may distribute campaign literature and signs before and after the program.

Bike safety event planned May 19
Elementary-aged kids will have the opportunity to learn tips on cycling safety, to get free bike safety helmets and T-shirts and to see the attractions at Schlitterbahn Waterpark Kansas City at a free family event from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 19. The annual Kansas City, Kansas, Kiwanis West Bike Rodeo is back for the 12th year with expanded offerings and the same location. The event will be held rain or shine in the parking lot and entrance area of Schlitterbahn Waterpark, Kansas City, 9400 State Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. The KCK Kiwanis West, in partnership with Schlitterbahn Waterpark Kansas City, Big D Cycling, Midwest Trauma Society and numerous other community businesses and organizations, are committed to helping area youth ride their bicycles safely. Urban Fishing Derby planned May 19
Urban American Outdoors TV and Kansas City Kansas Community College will hold the 13th annual kids fishing derby from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 19, at the KCKCC pond, 7250 State Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. The fishing derby is limited to the first 250 kids ages 4 through 16 who sign up at www.urbankidsfish.com. Prizes will be awarded. Those participating may bring chairs and their own buckets to hold fish.

Thrive and Drive planned May 19
Thrive and Drive will take place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 19, at the Farmers’ Market, 129 Elm St., in Bonner Springs, Kansas. The day will honor first responders, service members and local farmers. Activities include a barbecue cookoff for fire, police, EMT and military members, a kids corner, art booths, live musical entertainment and a car show. Annual kids fishing derby to be June 9 at Wyandotte County Lake
The Ed and Ione Trapp Annual Derby will take place on Saturday, June 9, at Wyandotte County Lake at the Kids Pond, 91st and Leavenworth Road. Registration will begin at 7 a.m. followed by derby fishing from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and a trophy presentation at 10:30 a.m. Participants sould bring their fishing gear. Worms for bait will be provided. A free hot dog coupon will be given to the kids who register. The event is sponsored by the Leavenworth Road Association and Wyandotte County Parks. Meeting asks residents for opinions about future of Main Library

Program planned on May 8 on immigrants and refugees in the community
“They Are Our Neighbors: Immigrants and Refugees in Our Community” will be presented at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 8, in the Main Kansas City, Kansas Public Library, second floor auditorium, 625 Minnesota Ave. The program may discuss the difference between an immigrant and a refugee, what it means to have a green card and be a permanent resident versus a citizen, how many immigrants and refugees are living in the city, where they come from and why, do they have to pay taxes, how the community can help to welcome and integrate them. There will be stories from immigrants and refugees who settled in the Kansas City area.

BPU to meet May 9

Program offered on soil mapping
Residents are invited to a program on soil mapping information at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, May 10, at the Sunflower Room, Wyandotte County Extension Office, 1208 N. 79th St., Kansas City, Kansas. The Soil Conservation Service in Wyandotte County offers soil mapping services, as well as soil erosion, pollution and storm water management. Donations of books and other sale items will be accepted at the church beginning 8 a.m. Thursday, May 10. Possible sale items include household items, dishes, decorations, towels, and holiday items. Youth Policy Debate to be May 12
The WyCo Youth Policy Debate will take place from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 12, at Kansas City Kansas Community College, Upper Jewell building, 7250 State Ave. Sponsored annually by State Sen. David Haley, D-4th Dist., the annual debate is open to students attending Harmon, Schlagle, Washington and Wyandotte high schools, Sumner Academy and College Gateway program. It is the seventh annual event. Sen. Haley started the event in 2012 as a way to encourage political awareness and active citizenry in Wyandotte County youth. In the event, young adults will have an opportunity to think on their feet and be heard by a community audience about current events. Support group to meet April 30
A Loss and Healing Support group will meet from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Monday, April 30, at the Keeler Women’s Center, 2220 Central Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. The Wyandotte County community, families of fallen victims, and community officials will come together on Monday, April 30, to remember those who have lost their lives to homicide in 2017. Master Gardeners to hold plant sale May 4-5
The annual plant sale of the Extension Master Gardeners in Wyandotte County will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, May 4, and Saturday, May 5, in the Wildcat Room of the Extension office at 1200 N. 79th St., Kansas City, Kansas. Many varieties of vegetables were grown by the Master Gardeners for this sale. A large variety of annual and perennial plants and flowers suitable for this climate will be available. Cash and checks will be accepted.

Registration open for Blue Devil 5K and Kids Trot May 5
The 2018 Blue Devil 5K and Kids Trot will be May 5 at Kansas City Kansas Community College. The Blue Devil 5K, which is in its 14th year, is at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 5. The course winds through the KCKCC campus on the roads, walking paths and sidewalks. The Kids Trot follows at 9 a.m. and is geared toward children 11-years and younger. Childcare volunteers will provide activities for the children from 7:30 to 9 a.m., so parents can participate in the run-walk. Registration for the 5K is $20 per person through March 31. The Kids Trot is $10. Registration for both the Blue Devil 5K and the Kid’s Trot includes a T-shirt, Finisher’s Medal, Goodie Bag and an all-you-can eat pancake breakfast following the event. About 200 people participated in the 5K and Kids Trot in 2017. Awards will be given to the top overall male and female finishers. In addition, the winner of each age group will receive an award and a prize. Children in the Kids Trot will run in heats based on age groups. Distances will range from 25 meters to one-quarter of a mile. No strollers are allowed. Bonner Springs Farmers’ Market to be May 5
The Bonner Springs Farmers’ Market will be from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 5, at Kelly Murphy Park, 129 Elm, Bonner Springs. Opening day, May 5, will feature music by Doug Kellis. The farmers’ market is planned on Saturday mornings during the rest of the summer, through Oct. 27.

Polski Day planned May 5 to raise funds for church
All Saints Catholic Church, 8th and Vermont, Kansas City, Kansas, will celebrate Polski Day on Saturday, May 5. A Polka Mass featuring the Good Shepherd Choir will be held at 4 p.m. May 5 at All Saints Church. The event also includes a Polski Day parade at 11 a.m. May 5 from 12th and Central, east to 8th Street, then to Vermont, ending at the church. Program planned on May 8 on immigrants and refugees in the community
“They Are Our Neighbors: Immigrants and Refugees in Our Community” will be presented at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 8, in the Main Kansas City, Kansas Public Library, second floor auditorium, 625 Minnesota Ave. The program may discuss the difference between an immigrant and a refugee, what it means to have a green card and be a permanent resident versus a citizen, how many immigrants and refugees are living in the city, where they come from and why, do they have to pay taxes, how the community can help to welcome and integrate them. There will be stories from immigrants and refugees who settled in the Kansas City area.

Program offered on soil mapping
Residents are invited to a program on soil mapping information at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, May 10, at the Sunflower Room, Wyandotte County Extension Office, 1208 N. 79th St., Kansas City, Kansas. The Soil Conservation Service in Wyandotte County offers soil mapping services, as well as soil erosion, pollution and storm water management. Those attending the presentation May 10 by Lonnie Miller, soil scientist, will find out how they can use the soil mapping information as it pertains to their own property.
