Historical Writers’ Book Fair planned Nov. 18

Downtown KCK Holiday Lighting Festival to be Nov. 30
The annual Mayor’s Holiday Lighting Festival in downtown Kansas City, Kansas, will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30. The festival, including a tree lighting ceremony, is held each year in front of City Hall at 701 N. 7th St., Kansas City, Kansas. On the evening’s schedule are visits with Santa and Mrs. Claus, school and community groups performing musical and dance selections and classic holiday movies. Some of these events will be inside the first-floor lobby of City Hall, starting at 4 p.m. There will be refreshments available. The festival is free and open to the public. Several sponsors are providing funding and services for the event. Volunteers are needed.

Speakers at the Wyandotte County Third Saturday Democratic Breakfast will be former State Rep. Bill Reardon and State Rep. Pam Curtis, D-32nd Dist. They will discuss the results of the Nov. 6 general election. Former Rep. Bill Reardon was in the Kansas Legislature for 30 years, from 1974 through 2004. Rep. Curtis has been a state representative for five years, and is a past staff member for the late Mayor Jack Reardon, former Gov. John Carlin and former Mayor Joe Reardon. Author to speak on World War II book at KCK Library
Kansas author Ronda Hassig will give a presentation on her latest book, “The Greatest Test of Courage,” at 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 5, in the Main Library auditorium, 625 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. Her book tells the story of Lt. Col. Edward Mack and his last three years in the Philippines as a Japanese prisoner of war. Edward Mack had everything: a wife, a newborn son, and his dream job. But as a West Point graduate stationed in the Philippines, his life changed forever on Dec. 7, 1941. Not long after, he would survive the Bataan Death March, Camps O’Donnell, and Cabanatuan. His final destination was Fukuoka, Japan, but first he was forced to endure the Hell Ships. In the end, only his ashes returned to his family in 1948. Hassig’s presentation includes images of source documents used to write the book, historical background, and timeline of the Japanese invasion of the Philippines in World War II. She will sign books following the event. Born and raised in Lawrence, Hassig is a fifth-generation Kansan, former school librarian and Kansas Master teacher. She has always loved Kansas history and her first book, “The Abduction of Jacob Wrote,” is set during Quantrill’s Raid.

Veterans Day Commemoration event to be Nov. 10

Chili dinner planned Nov. 10
A chili dinner is planned, with a veterans’ ceremony, from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, at Grinter Place, 78th and K-32, Kansas City, Kansas. The cost of the dinner will be $8 for adults, $4 for veterans with ID, and $4 for youth under 12. Tours of the Grinter House will be available from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. for $6 for adults and $3 for children. Santa arrives on Nov. 10 at Cabela’s
Santa Claus is scheduled to arrive at 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, at Cabela’s, 10300 Cabela Drive, Kansas City, Kansas. After arriving in front of the store in a boat, Santa Claus will participate in a tree lighting ceremony. Then Santa will open the Santa’s Wonderland section inside the Cabela’s store. A number of free activities, including crafts and games for the family, are planned through 8 p.m. Saturday at the Wonderland area. The area will include remote control trucks, a laser-foam toy arcade and Lincoln Logs building area, among other games. Hot chocolate and cookies are planned. There are also free photos with Santa Claus, and free visits with Santa. Santa’s Wonderland will run through Dec. 24 at Cabela’s. Santa will appear daily, and a schedule will be posted at the Cabela’s store.
