Black History Month program on Feb. 11 to be about the town of Nicodemus
 A Black History Month program, “Children of the Promised Land,” will be presented from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, at the Main Kansas City, Kansas, Public Library, 625 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. The history topic will be the town of Nicodemus, Kansas, the only remaining western town established by African Americans during the Reconstruction Period following the Civil War. The town is a National Historical Site. A pictorial history will explore the experiences of the mothers and their children in Nicodemus, some of whom were the first in their families who were born free. The discussion will explore child-rearing during and after slavery, stories of children conceived in slavery but born free, and how baby names were changed or used to reflect attitudes about free-born children.

Leavenworth Road Association to meet Feb. 11

Women’s Chamber to discuss heart disease awareness Feb. 19
 The Kansas City, Kansas, Women’s Chamber of Commerce will meet from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19, at Providence Medical Center, Auditoriums B and C, 8929 Parallel Parkway, Kansas City, Kansas. The “Go Red for Women Luncheon” will focus on heart disease awareness. Cardiovascular diseases are the No. 1 killer of women, and 80 percent of cardiac and stroke events may be prevented with education and action, according to health officials. Bonner Springs Library plans Jazz on the Lake fundraiser Feb. 22
 The 10th Jazz on the Lake, a fundraiser for the Bonner Springs City Library, will be held on Saturday, Feb. 22. The event will take place at the Lake of the Forest Clubhouse in Bonner Springs. It will feature dinner, dancing to the jazz sounds of the Kicks Band, a silent auction and a live auction. The theme this year is “Over the Moon.” The last two events, in 2015 and 2017, supported the children’s programming and collection and a special preservation project. Money raised from these events has enabled the library to bring a variety of organizations, performers and presenters to the library to support educational and cultural library programs for children and youth. The event on Feb. 22 will continue to support children’s programming and the library collection, along with new technology for the children’s area. Tickets cost $50 and are available at the library. Poet laureate of Kansas to appear Feb. 27 at Donnelly College
 Huascar Medina, 2019-2020 poet laureate of Kansas, will make a public appearance at 9 a.m. Feb. 27 on the Donnelly College campus, Event Center, 608 N. 18th St., Kansas City, Kansas. Medina, Topeka, is a poet, writer and performer. He is a freelance copywriter and literary editor for seveneightfive magazine, publishing stories that spotlight literary and artistic events in northeast Kansas. His poems may be found in his collection, “How to Hang the Moon,” published by Spartan Press. Medina is the winner of ARTSConnect’s 2018 Arty Award for Literary Art. Medina will present, “May Our Voices Ring True.” His purpose is to help audiences share their experiences through poetry and discover what truly connects them. The talk is presented by Donnelly College and Humanities Kansas. The presentation is free and open to the public.

BPU to install board members on Jan. 8
The Kansas City, Kansas, Board of Public Utilities will install three recently elected board members on Wednesday, Jan. 8, at a meeting at the BPU’s administration building, 540 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. Three board members who were elected in November will take the oath of office at a 6 p.m. ceremony prior to the regular board meeting, according to a spokesman. Two incumbents, Robert Milan Sr., 1st District; and Jeff Bryant, 3rd District; as well as newly elected board member Rose Mulvany Henry, at large, position 3, will be sworn in. According to the spokesman, there will not be a visitors’ comment section at the Jan. 8 board meeting.
