Historical Society plans annual meeting Nov. 17

The Wyandotte County Historical Society will hold its annual meeting starting at 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 17, at the Wyandotte County Museum, 631 N. 126th St. in Wyandotte County Park, Bonner Springs.

The meeting is set an hour earlier because of numerous activities. Officers and trustees will be elected; the annual service awards will be presented to volunteers. The meeting will mark the formal release of the digital archive of “The Historical Journal of Wyandotte County.” Steve Zuk, a Kansas City, Kansas, historian, will present a slide show offering historic photos of Wyandotte County.

Officers nominated include Rebecca Barber Meditz, president; Bill Hutton, first vice president; Dan Desko, second vice president; George Groneman, third vice president; Jim Ryan, treasurer; Loren Taylor, historian; and Tom Cooley, Gene Chavez, Bill Miller, Zelma Sully and Jim Scherzer, trustees.

Conversations, led by Taylor, a Kansas City, Kansas, lawyer and a past president of the society, started in 1999 and led to the quarterly publication of The Journal. During the past 20 years, The Journal has published more than 600 articles by more than 65 authors; it has become a resource for three major works on Wyandotte County history.

All of the issues of The Journal are available on a digitalized disc. Lifetime Society members who attend the annual meeting will receive a free disc.

Refreshments will be served after the meeting.

Braves advance over Eudora in 4A football playoffs

The Bonner Springs Braves moved on to the second round of the KSHSAA 4A football playoffs with a 49-12 thumping of the Eudora Cardinals on Friday night.

Running back Bryce Krone scored four touchdowns in the game. Krone gained 244 yards on 13 carries to push his season total over the 2,100 yard mark.

Quarterback Johnathon Tapia completed a 41-yard touchdown pass to receiver Rishaud Dockery. Armani Washington caught 3 passes for 106 yards to lead the receivers.

The Braves also scored on special teams when Peyton Parks blocked a first quarter field goal attempt by the Cardinals. Armani Washington retrieved the block and returned it 91 yards for a Braves touchdown.

Bonner Springs will play at Bishop Miege High School in the second round next Friday at 7:00 PM.

In other 4A playoff action, Piper came back from a 30-18 halftime deficit to defeat Basehor-Linwood 56-47. The Pirates will play at Paola next Friday.

In the 5A playoffs, Turner lost to De Soto 62-22. Washington lost to Blue Valley Southwest 31-6. Schlagle defeated Sumner Academy 61-13 and advances to play Blue Valley Southwest at Schlagle Stadium.

In the 6A playoffs, Wyandotte defeated Harmon 51-30, and will travel to Olathe North in the second round next week.

Bonner Springs woman sentenced for scamming homeowners facing foreclosure

A Kansas woman was sentenced today to a year and a day in prison for swindling homeowners facing foreclosure with false promises to help them save their homes, U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister said.

Ruby Price, 74, Bonner Springs, Kansas, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit mail fraud and wire fraud. Price was a managing partner of Arize Group, a company based in Overland Park, Kansas. She and co-defendants took money from distressed homeowners by fraudulently promising to:

  • Lower their interest rates.
  • Lower their monthly payments
  • Help them obtain loan modifications.

McAllister commended the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development – Office of Inspector General, the Federal Housing Finance Agency – Office of Inspector General, the Johnson County District Attorney’s Office, Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Emilie Burdette and Assistant U.S. Attorney Jabari Wamble for their work on the case.
