Mayors recognize Hillcrest transitional program

Three mayors got together today to make a proclamation on behalf of Hillcrest Transitional Housing Center, 728 N. 31st St., Kansas City, Kan.

The event was packed with kids and community members who heard the proclamations from Kansas City Kan., Mayor Mark Holland, Bonner Springs Mayor Jeff Harrington and Edwardsville Mayor John McTaggart.

The Hillcrest program, according to information from the center, is designed to move families and youth from homelessness to self-sufficiency. It is designed to give homeless families and youth the motivation and training needed to break the poverty-welfare cycle and lead an independent life.

The program offers tough love with a caring environment, according to information from the center. It meets housing needs with a furnished apartment, and provides professional services such as medical, auto repair and legal assistance, weekly counseling sessions for problem-solving, employment, budgeting, and parenting.

After the homeless get on their feet with a new job and a new place to live, they are provided with continued counseling and encouragement, according to information from the center.

KDOT to close 134th Street near I-70 next week for bridge work

134th Street near I-70 will be closed to all through traffic from March 31 to April 4 for bridge construction work.

The road closure includes both northbound and southbound lanes from Kansas Avenue to Riverview Avenue, and will be in effect 24/7. The closure starts at 8 a.m. Monday, March 31, and runs through 6 p.m. April 4.

According to the Kansas Department of Transportation, there will be no marked detour. Drivers will need to use alternate routes during the roadway closure.

The Kansas Department of Transportation urged all motorists to be alert, obey the warning signs, and slow down when approaching and driving through the project work zone.

Man extradited to Wyandotte County in connection with Bonner Springs robbery

A man faces charges of aggravated robbery in connection with an incident March 15 in Bonner Springs.

James A. Vaughan, 49, was arrested in Missouri this past weekend, and today was transported by deputies to the Wyandotte County Jail.

He was booked into the jail and is being held on a $75,000 bond in connection with an aggravated robbery March 15 at Advance America, 608 Tulip, Bonner Springs. The warrant also said he is being held for kidnapping.

More than $1,300 was taken in the robbery, according to authorities.

Authorities said the suspect carried a long-barreled gun during the robbery. Bonner Springs police had issued an arrest warrant for Vaughan and sought the public’s assistance in locating him on March 19.

Vaughan will make his first court appearance on Wednesday.
