Wyandotte County high schools remain in same classifications this year

High school classifications were announced last week by the Kansas State High School Activities Association, based on enrollments.

The schools in Wyandotte County remained at their same levels, without changing classes, according to the KSHSAA.

In eastern Kansas, Blue Valley West in Overland Park went from Class 6A to 5A; Kansas City Christian in Prairie Village went from Class 3A to 2A; and Immaculata in Leavenworth went from 2A to 1A.

Using enrollment figures from Sept. 22, the KSHSAA included these classifications for Wyandotte County schools:

Class 6A
Wyandotte High School, 1,487 students.

Class 5A
Schlagle High School, 831 students;
Harmon High School, 1,288 students;
Turner High School, 1,182 students;
Washington High School, 1,021 students.

Class 4A
Bonner Springs High School, 756 students;
Bishop Ward High School, 345 students;
Piper High School, 569 students;
Sumner Academy, 691 students.

Parade of Heroes to be Oct. 2

The eighth annual Parade of Heroes will take place at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, at Village West Parkway to Stadium Drive, Kansas City, Kan.

Presented by the Village West Rotary Club, the parade will honor men and women in uniform.

The parade marshal will be Clausie Smith, former mayor of Bonner Springs.

The parade will include vintage cars, military vehicles, marching bands and police and fire entries.

Proceeds from the parade will benefit PACES Robert’s Place for children in crisis.

Saturday events

Dotte Trot to benefit SAFE fund
The Dotte Trot, a 5K and 10K run, will be run at 8 a.m. Sept. 27 at Wyandotte County Lake Park, 9100 Leavenworth Road, Kansas City, Kan. All proceeds from the run benefit the Surviving Spouse and Family Endowment Fund. SAFE supports the families of law enforcement officers, firefighters and emergency service personnel in the Kansas City metropolitan area who have died while protecting the community and citizens. Fall homes and garden tour to be Saturday
A fall homes and garden tour Saturday, Sept. 27, is sponsored by the Bonner Springs School District’s Education Foundation. Five homes in Bonner Springs and Lake Forest are on the homes and garden tour. The tour begins at 10 a.m. and runs through 4 p.m. Tickets are $15 and are available in six places in downtown Bonner Springs: The Pink Zebra Boutique, Dee Dee Jewelry and Vintage Décor, This and That, City Hall, and Flip. Renaissance Festival continues on weekends
The Kansas City Renaissance Festival continues on Saturday and Sunday at the festival grounds at 628 N. 126th St. (126th and State), Bonner Springs. The festival is the re-creation of a 16th century English village. Music, food, crafts, shows and other entertainment are featured at the festival, which runs on weekends through Oct. 14. Fundraiser set Sept. 27
A Texas Hold-‘Em and Taco Dinner to raise funds for Missy Kline is scheduled at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, at the Fraternal Order of Eagles, 4726 Merriam Drive, Overland Park.

Slovenefest to be Saturday
The 6th Annual Slovenefest celebration will be held at Monsignor Mejak Hall, Gym, and Holy Family School Grounds located at 513 Ohio, Kansas City, Kan. The festival will run from 5 to 10 p.m. The 6th Annual Slovenefest is dedicated to Don Lipovac in memory of his outstanding contribution to classical and folkloric Slovenian accordion music. At the event, there will be a Mass at 4 p.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church, 274 Orchard St., Kansas City, Kan. Festivities will follow the Mass and include children and adult games, a cultural booth, souvenirs, and a silent auction, and an authentic Slovenian dinner, serving a choice of Sarma (stuffed cabbage roll), Poljene Paprika (stuffed pepper), Krvavica (a specialty sausage), Slovenian potato salad and green beans.

Annual Bishop Ward auction planned Sept. 27

Summer concert to be Sept. 27 at Legends
Dave and Buster’s Summer Concert Series will continue at 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, on the rooftop patio at The Legends Outlets. The Insanitones will perform from 9 p.m. to close Sept. 27. Different bands will play on Saturdays through September.
