The Silver City Day Parade will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 3. The parade route is along Strong Avenue in the Argentine area, from 37th to 24th streets. Motorcyclists plan fall Night Train Run Oct. 3

Salmon Wrap Fest scheduled at Boulevard Drive-In
The Salmon Wrap Fest is scheduled at 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, at the Boulevard Drive-In Theatre, 1051 Merriam Lane, Kansas City, Kan. Food and music are planned. Food will be from Plates Express, a food truck. A live musical performance by Royce White is planned, as well as a disc jockey. Admission is $10. Second Men’s Olympic Qualifying Match planned at Sporting Park
The CONCACAF Men’s Olympic Qualifying Match is planned at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, at Sporting Park, near State Avenue and I-435 in Kansas City, Kan. On Thursday night, the U.S. Under 23 Men’s National Team won the first game at Sporting Park over Canada, 3-1.
Also, Cuba defeated Panama on Thursday. On Saturday, Canada will play Panama at 1:30 p.m. at Sporting Park, and the U.S. Under 23 Men’s National Team will face Cuba at Sporting Park at 4 p.m. Saturday. Renaissance Festival continues with ‘Wine, Chocolate and Romance’
The Renaissance Festival will continue Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 3-4 near 126th and State in Bonner Springs. Gates open at 10 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, each festival day, rain or shine. The event is open weekends only. “Wine, Chocolate and Romance” is the theme of the weekend. Featured are a wedding of the century, grape stomp, a newlywed game and more romantic activities. The wedding of the century will start Saturday at noon on the Joust Track. The couple will then participate in the royal parade at 12:30. The reception will follow at the Queen’s Gate at 12:45 p.m. Additional guests’ tickets can be purchase for $13 for adults and $10 for children. Additional reception tickets can be purchased for $5 each. Final day for registration is 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1. Tickets are $20.95 for adults and $11.95 for children 5 to 12. Teen ‘Banned Book Bingo’ planned
Teens plan to play “Banned Book Bingo” from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, at the West Wyandotte Library, 1737 N. 82nd St., Kansas City, Kan. Those who participate in the event will learn about books that have been challenged or banned in different parts of the United States.

Autumn art show and wine tasting planned

Strawberry Hill Museum open on weekends
The Strawberry Hill Museum, 720 N. 4th St., Kansas City, Kan., is open on the weekends. The museum is open from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. McFadden, VanDerwell win WyCo Senior Golf championships

The third time proved a charm for Ed McFadden and Dave VanDerwell in Kansas City’s oldest and biggest senior golf championship.

McFadden took low score honors with a one-over-par 73 and VanDerwell had the low net of 64 to lead a field of 111 golfers in the 32nd annual Wyandotte County Senior Championship at Sunflower Hills Thursday. Both were playing in the tourney for just the third time and both are 60.

McFadden needed a scorecard playoff for low gross honors, edging veteran Bob Chatterton by virtue of a par on the monstrous par 4 15th hole. “A driver and 6-iron,” said McFadden of reaching the 442-yard hole in two.

McFadden had three bogeys but offset them with birdies at Nos. 9 and 18. “I got pretty lucky on punch out shots a couple of times,” McFadden said. “On No. 14 I was under trees on the right side and punched out and was able to make par.”

A 1972 graduate of Bishop Ward, McFadden has been playing Sunflower Hills since it opened and has become a regular in the men’s senior league.

“I’ve been in the upper 60’s, 68, 69,” said McFadden, the sales manager for Jay Wolfe Toyota and a 25-year member of the sales staff for Jay Wolfe auto dealerships.

The senior tourney couldn’t have come at a better time for VanDerwell.

“I had been playing poorly and all of a sudden in the last two or three weeks I’ve been in the 70s for five straight rounds,” said VanDerwell, who shot a 77. A three to four times a week golfer, VanDerwell credited improved distance and accuracy with his driver for his improved play. “I’ve been hitting it pretty straight.”

A retired teacher from Argentine Middle School and the Olathe school district, VanDerwell also plays in the Kansas City Senior Golf Association and a 9-hole league at Overland Park.

At 82 years of age, Clarence Nigh came closest to shooting his age with an 84. Flight winners for low gross included Bill Campbell, Glenn Rice, Tim Francis, Dave Klein, Chatterton and Nigh while low net flight winners were Jay Sutera, Steve Briles, Gary Hudgens, Keith Marr, Dave Davis and Joe Dercher.
