The Cathedral of St. Peter, 416 N. 14th St., Kansas City, Kan., will serve as the host church for penance services during Lent for Catholic churches in Wyandotte County. The penance services may be held in conjunction with a Holy Door observance. The remaining penance services will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 22.
St. Peter’s Cathedral will hold a St. Joseph Table and spaghetti dinner on Sunday, March 20. The event is sponsored by the Altar Society and the Knights of Columbus and will be in the parish center, 409 N. 15th, Kansas City, Kan. The spaghetti dinner will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. A free will offering will be accepted for the spaghetti dinner. The St. Joseph Table will be displayed from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

First Christian Church of Bonner Springs, 148 N. Nettleton Ave., will be the host of Bread and Broth during the Lenten season. Lent is a time of reflection between Ash Wednesday and Easter. Bread and Broth is a simple meal of fellowship at 6 p.m. on Wednesday nights with a short service at 6:30 p.m. led by the pastor, Randy Beeman. The fellowship will help persons reflect on the importance of Jesus’ life, ministry, and his resurrection on Easter. This remaining dates for Bread and Broth are March 16 and 23.
First Christian Church, 148 N. Nettleton, Bonner Springs would like to invite the public to worship services at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, March 13. The Rev. Bill Rose-Heim, regional minister and president of The Christian Church of Greater Kansas City, will be preaching.

Judson Baptist Church, 8300 State Ave., will have an interim pastor preaching at Sunday services through March 13. The 8:30 a.m. service will be suspended during this time. Sunday School will be at 9:45 a.m. and the regular Sunday service will be 11 a.m.

A gospel nonviolence study group will meet from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Mondays, March 14 and 28, at the Keeler Women’s Center, 2220 Central Ave., Kansas City, Kan. Living Water United Methodist Church, 3001 N. 115th (at 115th and Leavenworth Road), will hold its annual Easter Egg Hunt and Carnival from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, March 26. Our Lady and St. Rose Catholic Church, 2300 N. 8th, will hold a Lenten revival with Father Chester Smith. It will include Mass at 11 a.m. Sunday, March 13, and a service at 7 p.m. Monday, March 14, at Our Lady and St. Rose. It also includes a 4 p.m. Mass Saturday, March 12, at Christ the King Church, 3024 N. 53rd St., with a covered dish dinner afterward, and 9:30 a.m. Mass Sunday, March 13, at Christ the King. Also part of the Lenten revival is the 8 a.m. Mass Sunday, March 13, at Blessed Sacrament Church, 2203 Parallel, Kansas City, Kan.

Risen Lamb International Church of the Nazarene, located in the Turner area of Kansas City, Kan., has announced the opening of the Risen Lamb Prayer Room and Retreat Center. On location at their church at 5301 Metropolitan Avenue, the prayer room and retreat center is open to the public for daytime retreats. All individuals or small groups seeking a quiet, sacred space to gather, pray, meditate, journal or read resources about prayer are welcome. The prayer room provides a peaceful space for solitude or can be scheduled in advance for groups of up to eight people. Guests seeking spiritual guidance may schedule a time of spiritual direction with one of the pastoral staff, and groups may inquire about scheduling a member of the pastoral team to lead or speak at a retreat. St. Patrick Catholic Church, 1086 N. 94th, Kansas City, Kan., is holding fish dinners from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Fridays during Lent in the parish center.

The vestry, the official governing board of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 1300 N. 18th St., Kansas City, Kan., will hold its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 17. The Stations of the Cross will be observed at 6:30 p.m. Friday, March 18; a soup supper will be served in the parish hall after the service. Neighborhood children have been invited to a parade and Easter egg hunt at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 19. A Lenten study session is planned at 9 a.m. Sunday, March 20, followed by the Palm Sunday service in English at 10 a.m.; the service in Spanish will be at 7 p.m.

Entrepreneur program planned
An Entrepreneur Business Basics program will be offered from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 12, at Donnelly College event center, 608 N. 18th St., Kansas City, Kan. Kira McConico of Integrity Designs and Consulting will be the facilitator. Guest speaker will be Marquita Miller, entrepreneur and author. A panel will discuss information entrepreneurs should know. Bank to offer free tax classes
Enterprise Bank and Trust is offering free tax classes to help small business owners prepare their 2016 returns at the bank’s full service bilingual location at the Prescott Plaza, 151 S. 18th St., Kansas City, Kan. The sessions are offered on four Saturdays. The next program is March 12, and will feature an Enterprise Bank and Trust financial adviser and a local tax professionals. GOP offering workshop to help residents challenge property tax
A free workshop is being offered Saturday, March 12, to help residents learn how to successfully challenge and protest their property taxes. Sponsored by the Wyandotte County GOP, the one-hour workshops will be held at five locations across Wyandotte County. The workshops, all on Saturday:

A chess tournament is going on from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Main Kansas City, Kan., Public Library, 625 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kan. The event is for children, tweens and teens. There will be snacks and prizes. It is in the story time-craft room.

‘Saturday by Grinter Stove’ planned today

A “Saturday by the Grinter Stove” program is planned at 11 a.m. March 12 at Grinter Place,
The program will feature history re-enactors George and Diane Bernheimer on the topic, “From Frontier Post to Thriving Community,” about Ft. Scott, Kan. The Grinter House was at the point where Moses Grinter operated a ferry across the Kansas River in the 1830s to 1860s, on a military route between Ft. Leavenworth and Ft. Scott. After the program at 11 a.m., a lunch will be served. Admission is $6 for the program, lunch and tour of Grinter Place.

Learn how marbles are made
A marble-making demonstration is scheduled from about 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 12, at Moon Marble Co. store, 600 E. Front St., Bonner Springs. Community event planned at Old Quindaro Museum March 12
A free community event is planned March 12 and 19 at the Old Quindaro Museum, 3432 N. 29th St., Kansas City, Kan. “Keeping Hope Alive” is the theme of the spring break event. The United Methodist Women at Wyandotte United Methodist Church, 7901 Oakland Ave., are planning a taco salad supper from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday, March 12, at the church. A freewill donation will be accepted.

Sporting KC home opener to be Saturday
Sporting Kansas City’s home opener will begin at 7:30 p.m. Saturday against the Vancouver Whitecaps FC at Children’s Mercy Park (the former Sporting Park), in Kansas City, Kan. The match will be televised live locally on KMCI-TV 38 the Spot and across the Midwest on SKCTV with coverage starting at 7 p.m. Listeners can also follow the action on Sports Radio 810 WHB (English) and La Grande 1340 AM (Spanish). There will be pregame festivities beginning at 5 p.m. Fans are encouraged to be in their seats by 7:15 p.m. for a pregame presentation.

Four area students on dean’s list at Creighton

Four area students have been named to the fall dean’s list at Creighton University, Omaha, Neb.

The students are Clay Beebe, Bonner Springs; Taylor Keesee, Bonner Springs; Richard Cassidy, Kansas City, Kan.; and Betty Gillespie, Kansas City, Kan.

Full-time students who earn a 3.5 grade point average or better on a 4.0 scale are eligible for the dean’s list.
