Program offered on raising safe kids

KCKCC to hold Workplace Kansas City Job Fair April 27
A Workplace Kansas City Job Fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 27 at the KCKCC Field House, 7250 State Ave. The fair opens at 9 a.m. for military veterans. UG Commission to meet April 28
The Unified Government Commission will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 28, at the Commission Chambers, lobby level, City Hall, 701 N. 7th St., Kansas City, Kan. Grinter Quilt Show to be April 29-30
The 40th Grinter Quilt Show will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, April 29, and Saturday, April 30, at Grinter Place Historic site, 78th and K-32, in Kansas City, Kan. From 50 to 60 quilts are expected to be on display in the show, sponsored by the Grinter Place Quilters. A guest speaker, Vicky Beasley, will attend this year’s Quilt Show. Beasley is the author of the Scrappy Farmer blog. She will speak at 2 p.m. Friday, April 29, and from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, April 30, at Grinter House. Her topic will be how to use scraps and how to organize them. Beasley plans to bring quilts to show to those who attend the program. While admission to the quilt show in the Grinter Barn is free, admission to the program in the Grinter House will be $3.

Master Gardeners Plant Sale to be April 29-30
The Wyandotte County Extension Master Gardeners Plant Sale will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, April 29, and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 30, in the Extension Office, Wildcat Room, 1200 N. 79th St., Kansas City, Kan. There will be vegetable plants, including tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, herbs and more; berry plants; flowers including annuals, perennials and Kansas native wildflowers; and miscellaneous items about gardening, including books, small tools and decorations. Proceeds from the sale help the Master Gardeners continue their activities, including maintaining demonstration gardens at the Ag Hall, at Turner Community Gardens, at the Rainbow Freedom School Garden and at Splitlog Farms. The Master Gardeners also provide educational activities through youth education at the gardens and in cooperation with local schools, and adult horticulture education on a variety of horticulture subjects through monthly classes at the Extension Office and to organizations requesting a speaker.

Class on May 5 to give tips on landscaping to attract birds and butterflies
The goals of beauty and habitat can be achieved together, with a garden design easily including the specific plants that provide food and shelter for wildlife and pollinators while still remaining beautiful for the humans, according to gardening experts. A class, “Landscaping for Wildlife and Pollinators,” will be taught by Meg Mullett, a Johnson County Extension Master Gardener and Kansas Master Naturalist, who has been gardening for 40 years. She not only grows food for her family, but also maintains an attractive landscape for wildlife using only organic methods. The class, sponsored by the Wyandotte County Extension Master Gardeners, will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, May 5, in the Sunflower Room at the Wyandotte County Extension Office, 1208 N. 79th St., Kansas City, Kan., 913-299-9300. The fee is $5, payable at the door. Registration is not required.

Grand opening planned for Full Employment Council location
Rep. Emanuel Cleaver II and Kansas City, Mo., Mayor Sylvester “Sly” James Jr. are expected to attend the grand opening of the new south location of the Full Employment Council Inc., and new corporate offices of the National Association of Construction Contractors Cooperative at 2 p.m. Monday, May 9, at 6025 Prospect Ave., Kansas City, Mo. The Full Employment Council is expected to announce new initiatives for unemployed youth and adults in the Kansas City area. A Mexican Fiesta will raise funds for Welborn Villa, 51st and Leavenworth Road, from 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. May 17. On the menu will be tacos, nachos, chips and salsa, beans or rice, cake and pop.

Program offered on cultural communication
“Cultural Conversations and Connections” will be the topic of a program sponsored by Mental Health America of the Heartland from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday, May 20, at the West Wyandotte Branch Library auditorium, 1737 N. 82nd St., Kansas City, Kan. The class is designed to deepen the level of authentic cross-cultural engagement to effectively communicate between dominant and marginalized groups. The presenter will be Barbara Lucas, a licensed clinical marriage and family therapist, who is with Sacred Counsel in Overland Park, Kan. Three continuing education units are available. Scholarship golf tournament planned June 8
The Kansas City, Kan., Foundation for Excellence will hold the 26th annual Scholarship Golf Tournament on June 8 at Sunflower Hills Golf Course, 122nd and Riverview, Bonner Springs, Kan. There will be a shotgun start for the morning flight at 7:30 a.m., after registration and breakfast at 6:30 a.m. Lunch and awards will be at 1 p.m. at the George Meyn Center. There is also an afternoon flight beginning at 1 p.m. after the lunch. Dinner and awards will be at 6 p.m. at the George Meyn Center. Proceeds from the tournament will go toward scholarships for at least 15 Kansas City, Kan., Public Schools seniors. Bishop Ward to hold 35th annual Golf Classic
Bishop Ward’s 35th annual Alumni and Friends Golf Classic will be held June 10 at Painted Hills Golf Course. Co-chairs are Tom Mayfield, class of ’81, and Kevin Connor, class of ’83. Bishop Ward High School will sponsor a day of fun activities, including the annual Tour de Cyclone bike ride, the Battle of the Badges, a police vs. fire flag football game, and a Bishop Ward baseball game. T-Bones plan open tryouts Saturday morning
For those who think they can play with the pros, open tryouts for the T-Bones will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 23, at CommunityAmerica Ballpark, Kansas City, Kan. Registration begins at 9 a.m. Saturday at Gate A. It will cost $105 per person to try out for the team. The T-Bones coaching staff, former professional players, and college coaches will conduct the tryout. Papermaking craft offered
Adults and senior adults may attend a craft program to learn how to make their own specialty paper from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 23, at the Main Kansas City, Kan., Public Library story time – craft area, 625 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City Kan. Participants will form their own sheets of paper and explore the possibility of embedding materials such as dried flowers, thread and seeds. Finished paper can be used in note cards, scrapbooking and other craft projects. Teens may attend if accompanied by an adult. Veterans to be recognized April 23 in Bonner Springs
VFW Chapter 6401 will be the host of a Vietnam War and Era Veterans Recognition event at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 23, at the Sunflower Room, 200 E. 3rd St., Bonner Springs, Kan. According to VFW officials, there will be a personal public recognition of each Vietnam War and Era veteran attending the event. Pins from the Department of Defense will be presented to each veteran. Lt. Col. James Holley Jr. will assist with the presentation. All veterans are welcome to attend the meeting, and the VFW post’s service officer will assist with needed paperwork to file a claim with the Veterans Administration or to get enrollment in the VA health care system. Also available to assist will be a representative and van from the Kansas City Vet Center. The Salvation Army will send a representative to help veterans in need. Also helping veterans will be Point Man Ministries, a Christian-based ministry. Spiritual help also will be provided. Retired Col. Lynn Rolf Jr., a Vietnam War veteran from Leavenworth, will be the guest speaker at the meeting. Bonner Springs Mayor Jeff Harrington is scheduled to present a proclamation. The public is invited to this event.

Church to hold spaghetti sauce contest
A spaghetti sauce contest will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, April 23, at Christ the King Catholic Church, Davern Hall, 53rd and Leavenworth Road, Kansas City, Kan. Those attending, at a cost at the door of $7.50 for adults and $5.50 for ages 7 to 12, will receive endless spaghetti and sauce tasting, bread, salad, tea, lemonade, one dessert and one opportunity to vote on the contest winner. Entries must have registered by April 13. Funds raised will go toward expenses for the annual ice cream social.
