Brownback to call special legislative session on school finance

Gov. Sam Brownback said today he would call a special session to keep Kansas schools open.

The Kansas Supreme Court has given Kansas legislators a deadline of June 30 to fix the state’s school finance law, which it has ruled is inequitable.

In a statement released today, Gov. Brownback said: “After discussion with legislative leadership, I have decided to call a special session to keep Kansas schools open, despite the court’s threat to close them. It is distressing that the Kansas Supreme Court has put the schools and legislature of Kansas in this position over less than 1 percent of school funding.

“I will do everything I can to keep this session focused on education. I am working to arrange the particular dates of the session, which will occur later this month,” Gov. Brownback stated.

House Minority Leader Tom Burroughs, D-33rd Dist., responded to Gov. Brownback’s announcement today:
“Three days after Democrats announced they were collecting petition signatures to call a special session to keep schools open, Gov. Brownback has heeded our call. It is my hope that Democrats and Republicans will come together in the coming days and fix the crisis the governor and his allies created. Our children and their families deserve solutions, not more excuses.”
