BPU wraps up refrigerator replacement rebate program

Enrollment deadline of April 30 for customer eligibility

Launched in October 2015, the Kansas City, Kan., Board of Public Utilities’ Refrigerator Replacement Rebate Program is intended to encourage utility customers to replace older, less efficient units with an Energy Star qualified appliance. To date, the program has enjoyed broad community support and significantly exceeded projected participation levels.

As noted when the program was initially created, this was only a temporary incentive intended to reduce overall energy usage through updating one of homeowners and businesses most consumptive energy sources. Promoted as a limited, short-term incentive program, BPU announced recently that this program will cease April 30, 2016.

As such, anyone interested in utilizing this rebate program must act quickly. To receive a BPU Refrigerator Replacement Rebate, customers should do the following:

1. Remove and replace older refrigerators with a new Energy-Star® or compatible qualified refrigerator from a retailer. Make sure the appliance has the Energy-Star® label or yellow Energy Guide label when making the purchase.
2. Request and submit the BPU Rebate Application immediately by calling 913-573-9997.
a. Include a copy of dated sales receipt /invoice showing manufacturer, model number, and purchase price of the new appliance – with a purchase date of no later than April 30, 2016.
3. Include copy of the affidavit of disposal of previously-owned refrigerator.
4. Once completed, customers will receive a mailed check from BPU within six to eight weeks.
