Matt Cragg has been named a BPU Everyday Hero for his collaboration with local organizations and dedication to the safety of the community.
A committee of peers and community members selected Cragg from among the many BPU employees nominated for this award.
Serving as supervisor of radio and cable, Cragg is celebrating his ninth year with BPU. His team recently launched a new radio system for all first responders and public safety officials in Wyandotte County.
Police, firefighters, paramedics, BPU personnel, Unified Government crews and others rely on the new system. They use it to communicate and dispatch crews and officers wherever they are needed.
The new system is tied into the Greater Kansas City metro radio system, and allows for new digital capabilities, including the ability to send text message alerts.
Cragg’s interest in technology began in the military. As a systems analyst for the Navy, he serviced communications, IT and electronics systems. While serving the country, Cragg earned two Naval Achievement medals and served in Iraq. He joined BPU as a radio technician and became an energy control technician after completing his IT degree.
As a supervisor, Cragg ensures every member of his team receives the necessary training to maintain and operate the radio system, and he also works to keep a team of satisfied, driven employees. Cragg sees his role as a motivator and public servant.
“My job is to support everyone at work. But at the end of the day, my job is to improve the safety of others in the community,” he said.
