Four Board of Public Utilities line crew members are working to restore power in the Orlando, Florida, area, in the wake of Hurricane Irma, according to BPU spokesman David Mehlhaff.
Mehlhaff said the BPU heard that the four crew members restored power to a hospital yesterday in Orlando.
The BPU crews left town last week in mid-week, accompanied by other Kansas electric utility crews, to assist in the Florida emergency.
Members of the BPU crews included Matt Campion, Mike Fergus, Eric Ferguson and Jake Janes, he said. The two crews brought two BPU trucks with them in the mutual aid mission.
Mehlhaff said at one time, the Orlando area where the BPU crews were working had 750,000 homes and businesses without power, and the specific area where they are located had more than 120,000 without power. Across Florida, there were reports of 6 to 7 million customers without power as a result of the hurricane, Mehlhaff said.
The BPU crews were expected to stay a maximum of 10 days in Florida, he added.
