Bonner Springs district launches anti-bullying program

Bullying Prevention Month is being observed in the Bonner Springs-Edwardsville School District with help from the community.

According to a district spokesman, local businesses are helping start a conversation on bullying.

Each school in the district is working to bring awareness to bullying and educate students on the subject through projects and events, a spokesman said. The theme for the program is “Don’t Be a Bully, Be a Brave!”

The Bonner Springs-Edwardsville Chamber of Commerce has sponsored the purchase of orange wristbands for all staff members. Each band is embedded with the theme of the campaign.

Through bullying prevention lessons, all elementary students also will receive wristbands.

The wristbands will give students and staff a visual reminder of the “Don’t Be a Bully, Be a Brave” initiative and create open communication channels for students to talk about bullying, according to district officials.

“Kids now have so many more opportunities to become a bully, whether it’s in person or online,” Superintendent Dan Brungardt said. “What we are doing as a district is providing staff with the training they need to recognize bullying behavior and prevent it from happening, and making sure our students can do the same. The support of our community drives the idea further and shows USD 204 kids how important this really is.”
