Blue Devil pitchers allow four hits in doubleheader sweep

Three pitchers combined to give up just four hits as Kansas City Kansas Community College swept Southwestern Iowa 6-0 and 10-2 Sunday.

The wins extended the Blue Devils’ winning streak to five in a row and overall record to 10-4 heading into a doubleheader Monday against Ottawa junior varsity before resuming Jayhawk Conference play against No. 14 ranked Highland Thursday at 2 and 4 p.m.,

Sophomore Faith Maslak allowed just one hit and struck out nine as she went the distance in the 6-0 opener.

The Blue Devils backed Maslak with 13 hits highlighted by a 2-run home run and a single by sophomore Kaylee Arnzen and a triple and two singles by Britney Smith. Alexis Rymer also drove in two runs with a double and single while Devin Purcel and Shaylun Grosstephan each singled twice.

Grosstephan stayed unbeaten in the 10-2 second game, winning her fifth game by allowing just three hits in four innings. She struck out three and faced only 15 hitters before Mackenzie Pinkerton finished with a perfect 1-2-3 fifth inning.

Smith led an 11-hit attack with a 2-run home run while Jennica Messer and Paris Forshey each drove in a pair of runs with two hits. Arnzen tripled and singled and drove in one run, Purcel singled twice and drove in one and Hannah Redick and Rymer each doubled.
