Blue Devil golfers fifth in tough Evangel tournament

Even 9 of 10 rounds in the 70’s couldn’t get Kansas City Kansas Community College better than fifth in the Evangel Fall Invitational golf tournament Monday and Tuesday.

Columbia College of Columbia, Mo., nipped Missouri Valley 588-589 in the nine-team tournament played at Rivercut Golf Course in Springfield, Mo.

The only community college in the field, KCKCC finished with a 607 total behind third place Evangel (596) and fourth place Bethany (599). Ottawa (618), North Central Missouri (638), Bethel (655) and the College of the Ozarks (670) rounded out the field.

Sophomore Bobby Armstrong of Wichita Bishop Carroll led the Blue Devils, firing a 2-under par 70 Tuesday that tied him for the day’s best round and earning a tie for fifth (78-70-148). Micah Morris was two shots back (76-74-150) in a tie for 13th.

Maize South sophomore Trevor Bauer finished 24th (76-78-154), Lawrence Free State freshman Jack Flynn 25th (78-77-155) and Leavenworth freshman Evin Wheaton 36th (79-82-161).

“A real tough golf course and a real good field,” KCKCC coach Gary Shrader said. “We were sixth after the first day and I challenged our players to move up and they did – by 15 strokes over Ottawa. We’re learning. If we learn something every time out, that will help get us ready for the playoffs next April.”

The Blue Devils will go up against some of the same teams next Monday and Tuesday when they compete in the Missouri Valley Invitational at Indian Foothills in Marshall.
