The front lawn of the Greater Kansas City Humane Society at 54th and Parallel Parkway was turned into a bicycle race course on Sunday during a fundraiser.
The Cyclocross race, promoted by localcycling.com, was a benefit for the Humane Society, said Christy Ubelaker, who is a cyclist and works for the Humane Society as a surgery technician.
She said the event was very successful, raising $1,300 for the Humane Society. Plus, three dogs may be adopted as a result of the event, she added.
“It was a super fun event,” Ubelaker said. “It was a hard course, and the racers really liked it.”
Besides the race, there were other fundraisers held in conjunction with the Cyclocross, and refreshments were available. Announcements were made throughout the day about dogs and cats that were available to adopt, and some of the animals were shown during the day, she said.
“We look forward to having another race next year,” she said.
Ubelaker said the Humane Society is currently full, and has many dogs and cats available to adopt. The location on Parallel Parkway still helps out Kansas City, Kan., Animal Control, doing their surgeries and taking in a lot of animals that need homes, she said.
The next fundraising event for the Humane Society is Santa Paws, held on Saturdays and Sundays on the Country Club Plaza at 200 W. 47th, Kansas City, Mo., she said.
This Santa Paws fundraiser, which is run by volunteers, allows people, their children and pets to have an opportunity to have a photo taken with Santa. All of those involved are volunteers, and all proceeds will go toward the Humane Society, she said.
