Kansas City, Kan., police are warning the public to be careful when shopping.
Police have been investigating multiple auto burglaries near shopping districts in Wyandotte County, a police spokesman said.
The burglars are targeting vehicles that appear to contain electronics, cell phones, bookbags, backpacks and other items of value, a police spokesman said.
Police warned that suspects can break the vehicle windows and quickly remove property from the inside.
Residents should be mindful that the holiday season often attracts criminal activity, the police spokesman said, and that criminals are aware holiday shoppers are storing merchandise and other valuables in their car.
Police offered some tips to prevent people from being victimized:
• Park in well-lit areas when possible.
• Make sure the interior vehicle is clear of any property that could be viewed as valuable.
• Lock your car doors and ensure the vehicle alarms are activated.
• Store any shopping bags in your trunk out of sight.
• If you are victimized, call police to the scene so your vehicle can inspected by an officer.
