The Bishop Ward boys basketball team kept the game close early, but then Tonganoxie ran away with it, posting a 59-23 road win against the Cyclones.

The score was 15-11 in the Chieftains’ favor after the first quarter, with Ward getting three-pointers from Pedro Galvez and Jordan Dominguez-Jones. Tonganoxie used a backcourt trapping defense, but Ward was able to circumvent it with cross-court passes or an outlet down the left sideline.

The game broke open in the second quarter. Ward’s offense was shut out while Tonganoxie went on a 19-point run, including a last-second three-pointer from senior Tanner Thoemke that sent the Chieftains to the locker room on a high note.

Ward got going again in the third quarter, but was never able to make a dent in the Tonganoxie lead. Both coaches substituted extensively in the final quarter, getting some game experience for their reserves.

Senior Mac Thompson led the Chieftains’ scoring with 15 points. Eleven Tonganoxie players scored in the game, and 15 players logged minutes. Ward got 5 points each from Javier Torres-Osuna and Quincy Tabron.

Tonganoxie’s win raised its record to 2-9 in the Kaw Valley League, 4-14 overall. Tonganoxie will play at Bonner Springs at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday. Ward is still looking for its first win of the season (0-10 KVL, 0-17 overall).

The Bishop Ward Lady Cyclones lost at home to Tonganoxie on Thursday night, 35-23.

Ward got in a hole early, 15-4 after the first quarter. The Cyclone guards were unable to penetrate to the basket and took contested shots against the taller Chieftain defenders.

Tonganoxie played patiently on the offensive end, reversing the ball to find an opening for a baseline drive or open shooter on the wing. The Chieftains hit five three-pointers in the game.

Ward played nearly even with Tonganoxie through the remainder of the game, but couldn’t close the early deficit.

Tonganoxie sophomore Lauren Gray led the scoring with 16 points, and was dominant on defensive rebounds, rarely allowing a second-chance shot. Ward sophomore Estephania Tapia posted 9 for the Lady Cyclones, 6 of them in the final quarter.

Tonganoxie’s win improves its record to 3-8 in the Kaw Valley League and 5-13 overall. Tonganoxie will play on Tuesday evening at Bonner Springs. Ward falls to 0-10 in the league (2-16 overall). The Cyclones will play host to Piper at Kansas City Kansas Community College on Tuesday.

The Harlem Globetrotters brought some Valentine’s Day love to young patients at the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Kansas, on Wednesday.

Will “Bull” Bullard and Briana “Hoops” Green of the famed basketball troupe visited several patients in the pediatrics ward and the pediatrics intensive care unit, frequently donning masks and gowns even as they delivered autographs, smiles, and their signature spinning basketball trick.

Green is in her second season with the Globetrotters. She is the 15th woman in the group’s 91-year history, following in the footsteps of KU’s Lynette Woodard, the first female Globetrotter.

Bullard is in his 10th season with the team and is also a three-time participant in TV’s “American Ninja Warrior.”

The Harlem Globetrotters will play three games in the Kansas City area on Feb. 24 and 25 — two daytime games at Silverstein Eye Centers Arena in Independence, Missouri, and an evening game at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Missouri.
